Chapter 4
The wind is still picking up and it feels like a hurricane has hit the town.
Luna cannot see anyone or anything and she cannot hear anyone breathing near her, she can only slightly hear Chad's voice somewhere to her left. The wind is blocking out pretty much every sound.
Luna has not moved from her spot, it is like she is stuck and unable to move. Then Luna suddenly feels someone grabbing for her hand and once found it, squeezes it tightly.
Before the sky turned dark and the clouds covered everything, Luna remembers standing next to Michael and Jacob, because they were talking about the film. But she cannot seem to remember, who was standing where exactly.
'Was Michael on the left and Jacob on the right or other way round? And who is it holding my hand?'
But her thoughts are interrupted, because whoever is holding her hand must have felt her flinch, because a deep voice whispers, close to her ear, into the darkness.
"That's you, isn't it Luna?" Luna recognizes the voice straight away and decides to keep hold of his hand.
"Don't worry, I won't leave your side. I promise."
Just then a lightning bolt hits the sky and a loud bang follows straight afterwards.
Seconds later the thick, black clouds vanish as quickly as they appeared and the sky turns back to its original blue colour.
Luna quickly lets go of the hand she is still holding and does not dare look at the person.
Instead she looks at the sky and realizes how beautiful it actually looks. So bright and blue, with not a single cloud in the sky.
When she looks down again, she realizes that everyone is looking into the direction where the bang had come from seconds ago, wondering what might have caused that sound.
Chad is the one to break the silence. "What the hell was that? Did you all hear that?" he asks, clearly not waiting for an answer to his second question, because it is obvious that everyone heard the bang.
"Should we go and check what that sound was?" Hunter asks, clearly excited.
Warren glazes at his watch.
"It's already half past four and dad will be waiting for me to come back and help him out in the shop. I promised I would. So, I've got to go. See you guys later."
With that he leaves, heading for the shop.
The others then decide to split up too and head of home. Their parents are already waiting for them to have lunch.
So, Luna makes her way home alone.
In front of her parents' house she stops and takes one last look in the direction the bang had come from. Then she disappears into the house, where her parents are already waiting for her at the dining room table.
"Where have you been?" her mother asks her.
"And why are you late?" her father waits for an answer.
Luna knows that both her parents were going to react like that, because they cannot stand it, when she is late for lunch or for dinner. They are very protective and are always scared that something has happened to her, when she is not home on time.
"I was with my friends at the cinema. Didn't you see the note I left for you on the kitchen table?" she replies, sitting down.
Then she explains to them that she is going to meet the others again at six o'clock. Her parents are okay with that, because they have to go off to work again after dinner. Her parents do not like to leave her at home alone either, so they are quite happy that she is going to see her friends, instead of staying at home alone.
Then they eat their food in silence and when Luna is finished, she asks if she can leave the tableto get ready, because she only has three quarters of an hour left to get ready, before she is going to meet up with her friends at the little shopping alley again.
At ten to six Luna is ready and goes downstairs into the kitchen, where her parents are already waiting to say goodbye to her. They also have to leave now. So, Luna puts on her shoes, grabs her bag and leaves the house together with her parents.
She then heads towards the shopping alley. Because it is summer, the sun is shining and it is still light outside. But although it is so warm outside, shivers keep running down her spine, as if somebody is following her. But every time she looks back, there is nothing there. No person in sight anywhere.
So, she carries on walking, turning around every so often, just to find her being the only person on the street and nothing unusual in sight.
All of a sudden, she hears footsteps behind her. She turns around once more, but like before there is nobody there.
'Great, now I'm hallucinating.' Luna thinks, shaking her head.
She is just about to turn around again, when her gaze falls onto the ground. There, just a few meters away from her are giant footprints on the ground. But all Luna can see are those footsteps. She rubs her eyes to make sure that she is not just picturing the footsteps, although she is hoping that it is just a hallucination. But when she opens her eyes again, the footsteps are still on the ground.
They are the biggest footprints Luna has ever seen and they are definitely not the footprints of a person. But they are also not the footprints of any animal. They are as big as dinosaur footprints, but everybody knows that dinosaurs are extinct.
Suddenly two more footprints appear in front of the ones that Luna is just looking at and he realises that they seem to be coming towards her.
Although she cannot see anything or anyone, she decides to not stick around any longer to find out whose footprints they are and starts running as fast as her legs can take her.
She can now hear the footsteps even louder than before and she realises that the footsteps are following her closely, knocking over everything that is in its way.
Street lights start falling behind Luna, causing cars with installed alarm systems to blink and beep continuously.
Luna carries on running, not looking back a single time. It feels like she is running for her life. In a way she is. By now she has reached the shopping alley. She can see that the footsteps obviously belong to a big creature, because it is now letting cars float in the air by picking them up and then smashing them onto the ground. Bright sparks of fire and thick, grey smoke rise from the destroyed cars.
Warren is just coming out of his father's corner shop, ready to meet up with the rest of the group. All he can see are destroyed cars and fire everywhere and Luna running towards him, screaming something he cannot understand, until she comes closer.
"Run!" she screams, grabbing Warren's hand and dragging him along with her, without stopping.
"What happened? All those cars... they are destroyed. And what exactly are you running from?"
"Look there", Luna points at the big footsteps that are now busy trying to destroy every single car in sight.
"Oh my god. They are huge!" Warren exclaims.
"Yeah, I know. Why do you think I am running?" Luna says sarcastically.
Just then the rest of the group come around the corner and nearly walk straight into Warren and Luna who are still running.
"What is going on here?" Jacob asks. Then he sees the huge footprints.
"What the hell is that?"
"We don't know, but we are definitely not going to stay here to find out", Warren answers.
Just then the footprints turn towards them, as if it has heard them. At the same time the whole group turns to the opposite direction and start running.
"What are we going to do now? Anyone got any ideas? If they have, it would be really helpful to say something like right now", Chad states anxiously.
"We've got to find a way to get rid of it", Talia says without taking a breath.
"Yeah, I had gotten that far...", but before Chad can finish his sentence, Jacob interrupts.
"And how are we going to do that?"
"I've seen this in a film before. We need to use flour", Hunter explains.
"And how is that going to help us? I really don't think baking a cake is going to help. We've got bigger problems right now and I'm not too sure it will appreciate us baking a cake for him", Jacob sarcastically answers.
"I wasn't inviting you to bake a cake with me, Jacob", Hunter answers, clearly annoyed. "We can use the flour to make out the shape of whatever is chasing us, by tipping the flour over it or at least throwing the flour at it", Hunter carries on, quite proud of knowing something better than Jacob for once.
"I mean don't you want to know what exactly is chasing us? And anyway, there's no way you can defeat something you can't see", he finishes. Jacob is definitely speechless, so Warren breaks the awkward silence.
"That's a great idea, Hunter. My dad has flour in his shop. You just got to find a way of distracting him, while I go back to my dad's shop and get the flour", Warren suggests.
"You'd better take someone with you though", Jacob says.
"I'll go with him", Hunter answers and looks at Warren, who nods in agreement.
So, the group turns around and starts running towards the footsteps, while Warren and Hunter head over to the corner shop.
Author's note:
This chapter is longer and hopefully makes up for my last chapter :)
I really hope you enjoy reading it and I would like to know what you think:
1) Will the flour work on whatever is after them and if it does, will they be able to get rid of it?
2) What do you think is chasing them? (This question would really interest me) :D
3) What do you think will happen next?
I would really love it, if you could answer these questions. I really want to know what is going through your heads :)
Please don't forget to vote, comment and of course follow me, if you haven't already :D
And finally I wanted to thank you for getting my book to 136 READS. That is amazing!!!!!!!! Thank you guys for your great support. I think our next aim should be 150 READS, what do you think? :)
