Chapter Two: One Wish
"Pfft." Aria says. "Like I'm going to believe that." She finishes sarcastically, but inside she's not so sure. She checks Instagram quickly. Her eyes widen nearly immediately at what she sees, and, for the first time in years, she starts tearing up.
One comment on Erika's post captioned: "that aria b!tch put me in the hospital with a broken arm!" says, "it wasn't her fault! I could tell she was sick and anyways we all make mistakes!"
She flinches, looking at the card.
Aria checks the account. It was Maya. But... didn't she want that part? Aria was sure Maya hated her for getting the lead!
And anyways, weren't Maya and Erika best friends?
Just then, her parents walk in, setting down their things and turning on the news. The reporter, a blonde woman in her mid 30's, says, "BREAKING NEWS! Masked man with weapon caught sneaking out from Divine Deuts shortly after dance incident with Erika Holman." She pauses. "No, we don't know why he was there or whether or not he intended to kill." What? Aria wonders momentarily, before realizing that she had to have been answering a question from someone at the scene.
Aria brushes it off, as she realizes quickly enough that no one had been harmed, but suddenly feels uneasy. She grabs the note and bracelet, which, at first, she didn't even notice was there, as it was tied around the rose's stem, and quickly runs upstairs to her room, quietly closing the door behind her.
"So... are you, like, magic or something?" Aria whispers to the bracelet, a thin brown strap with a golden charm in the shape of a rose attached to it. Nothing happens.
"Ugh. What was I thinking? Of course it's not real." Aria says, yet still takes a second glance at it before leaning back in her swivel chair at her desk. As she does, she notices an engravement in the back that she hadn't seen before. It read: Wish
"Aria!" her dad yells angrily from downstairs.
She rolls her eyes. "What?!"
"Get downstairs!"
"Why?!"
"Because I SAID SO, Aria."
Aria begrudgingly stomps downstairs, sighing loudly as possible. "What?"
"Don't give me that attitude, young lady!"
"I'm not a young lady anymore, Dad, I'm thirteen."
"Compared to me, yeah, you are. And anyways, keep your voice down. Your mom and I are trying to watch a documentary about the history of Star Wars."
"Whatever."
"I love you!" Her dad calls up, but Aria could care less about his attempted truce.
She quickly picks up the bracelet after trudging upstairs, closing her eyes and leaning back in her chair. "God, I wish he would just get out of my life!"
After her tantrum is over, Aria can't help but wonder. What do I wish for? She thinks, and says the first thing that comes to mind. "I want to be famous. The best dancer in all the world!" Then, she ties it around her wrist. Just as she does, she swears she sees a golden light emitting from the charm, but she brushes it off as effect of her eyes adjusting.
