Chapter One: The Note

"Actually, I feel a little motion sick. I have to sit this one out." She says.

"I haven't practiced the routine enough, I can't do this. Let Maya take my part."

Any of those words could have prevented the fall from happening. None of them did. She should have stayed in the bathroom while the routine was going on. Then, while she would have been humiliated, Erika wouldn't have gotten hurt. She repeats situation after situation in her head that she could have done.

And then she remembered the one that did.

She was in the middle of a pirouette when she heard a voice in her head, telling her after 9 years of being the best in the Divine Duets, that she no longer was. She fell. Normally when she falls, she'll act as if were part of the dance. Only this time, she didn't realize she was falling until she heard Erika scream.

She was on the ground, her left arm in a completely unsettling position. She heard crying, then people rushing to her side but she simply lay, on the ground as if nothing happened at all. For a moment, she wondered if she were dreaming. Afterall she had been lightheaded in the bathroom just before the routine started. But no, she knew, that wasn't it.

But here she was now, in the car on the way home, in the backseat sulking away in her own misery. It's my fault, it's my fault, it's my fault.

"Now, Aria." She heard, looking up. It was her mom, holding the car door open for her.

"Sorry," she says. "I didn't realize--"

"I know." Her mom replies, a sad tone to her voice.

Aria nods and heads inside, where she immediately sets down her pointe shoes and starts to run upstairs to retreat to her room, wondering what horrible posts or tweets will have been about her on Instagram or Twitter.

But she stops short, realizing she left her phone on the kitchen counter. She mentally face-palms, and walks over to where it was left. That's when she notices the gift. A blood red flower, with a card attached. She puts the rose in a tall, clear vase, the foot long stem emerging from even it. She then carefully opens the card, which, she notes, says "When Wishes Know No Bounds" in dark, fancy lettering.

Inside reads:

"Close your eyes and make a wish,
Then tie this bracelet 'round your wrist.
When it falls off or wears through,
That is when your wish comes true."

Then, handwritten at the bottom, says, We all make mistakes. But not everyone gets to go back and change them.
