The First Step-Percy POV
"Piper!" I caught up with the daughter of Aphrodite.
"What's up, Fish Face?" She grinned at me.
"So Jason mentioned that you know how to surf."
"And?"
"Well people keep asking me if I can surf, so I wanted to know if you could teach me?"
Piper laughed. "The son of Poseidon doesn't know how to surf?"
"I don't know!" I exclaimed exasperatedly. "But I don't want to get out there thinking I do and then find out I can't and faceplant on the beach or something!"
"Alright, calm down Fish Boy, I'll teach you." Piper laughed. "We just need to find somewhere that we can get some equipment."
I grinned. "Well, let's go see the Stolls."
"Why the Stolls?"
"You'd be surprised what those two have 'borrowed' from stores."
"True that. Lead the way."
Piper and I jogged down to the Hermes cabin and banged on the door.
A younger boy with curly blond hair that stuck up at all angles answered the door, rubbing his eyes and yawning.
"Hey, Percy, Piper, what's up?"
"Sorry, Jordy, did we wake you?" I flashed him an apologetic smile.
"Yeah, but I needed to get up anyway. So who you looking for?"
"Are Connor and Travis here?"
Jordy turned around and scanned the cabin quickly.
"Nope, not here. Most of the cabin is training right now, maybe check there?"
"Alright, thanks Jordy. Hope you feel better." Piper dug in her pocket. "Also, Minnie gave me this for you."
Jordy's face lit up as he grabbed the folded square of paper. "Thanks, Piper!"
"What was the paper?" Percy asked as he and Piper walked towards the arena where the cabin would be practicing.
"Note from his girlfriend. It smelled like her perfume, which is what she always does with her letters when she has important information." Piper shrugged. "I didn't read it."
The sound of clashing weapons started to ring through the air, along with the shouts of overexcited teens running around like mad, which with the Hermes cabin, was entirely plausible.
"This might get messy." Piper muttered.
"Well, Beauty Queen, be ready to fight your way in to retrieve the damsels."
"Who're you calling Beauty Queen, Fish Lips?" She grinned. "I'm the hero of the story."
I laughed and we walked through the doors of the arena into chaos.
Blades were everywhere, on the ground, in the air, in people's hands.
"Oh good gods, this is going to be Hades to get through." Piper muttered.
"Nah. Just charmspeak them." I shrugged.
"Right. Hey, everyone stop!"
Only a few people actually stopped moving. "It's too loud for them to hear me."
"Alright, let me try." I stuck my fingers in my mouth and let loose with a piercing taxi whistle that I use for calling Blackjack.
The entire arena froze.
"Okay, that is unfair." Piper crossed her arms.
"Travis, Connor, we need to see your stash." I called.
"You got it, Jackson!" Travis grinned, sheathing his sword. Connor did the same and they traversed the minefield of weapons and teenagers.
"Hey Percy, won't Blackjack come from that whistle?" Piper asked when the brothers reached them.
"Nah, he's running a package for me."
"Blackjack run's packages?"
I shrugged. "I promised him doughnuts."
"Of course you did." Piper laughed.
"Okay, what do the two of you need?" Travis threw open the door to the Hermes cabin, heading for his bunk.
"Two surfboards." Piper said.
"No special gear to wear?"
"Eh. My suit will be fine and Percy can always stop himself if he falls in, he's not gonna get sand-burn or anything." Piper shrugged.
"Thanks, Pipes." I said sarcastically as Travis pulled two longboards from under his bed.
"I want the turquoise one." Piper grabbed said longboard.
"Then I'll take the blue one." I chuckled.
"I'd say race ya to the beach, but I don't think a first timer like you could run with a board in hand." Piper teased as we started towards the beach.
"Is that a challenge?"
"You wanna fall on your face or what?"
"So it's a challenge. You're on!" I started sprinting. I admit, at first it was hard to hold the board in a way that it wouldn't catch on the ground, but I quickly figured out how to do it and sprinted for the sand.
"Okay, you're figuring out how to handle it." Piper admitted. "And that's a big step. Now you've got to get the next one right."
"Teach me, oh great one." I joked.
"You can't cheat, got it?" She poked her finger in my face. "No using powers unless we get out there and can't catch a wave."
"I solemnly swear not to use my powers unless you give me permission." I held my hand up like I was in court and she laughed.
"Alright, Gred, let's get going. First real step to surfing is getting out there. Follow me."
"You got it Forge!" I ran after her. We hit the water in stride and I made sure to keep pace with her as we laid our boards out next to us and began to hop the small waves coming in.
"How far out are we going?" I shouted.
"I'll tell you when we get out there!"
