Chapter 27

"Autumn, you've been getting ready forever." Luke groaned. I continued to shuffle through my closet in an attempt to find something to wear, but I was near out of luck since most of my stuff was back and our place in Manhattan.

"It's been half an hour." I defended as I shut my drawers and walked back into my bathroom. I heard a sigh escape his lips and I turned back to my mirror, smoothing down my hair and realizing I've done as much touching up as I could.

I entered my room once again, watching as Luke rummaged through the things scattered all along my desk. He'd done this nearly a thousand times before and probably has the mess memorized. I turned my back to him and started flicked through my closet.

"What's this?" Luke asked from across the room. I glanced over my shoulder, seeing that he had my Christmas present in his hands.

"A polaroid camera." I plainly said as I was tugging a blouse off of a hanger. I spun around to face him as he toyed with the camera, it was clear he didn't know to use it. The tip of his tongue peaked out from the corner of his mouth as he fumbled with the camera, careful not to break it or drop it.

I pulled my shirt over my head and just as it fell to the floor, Luke had peered up at me, instantly spinning around.

"Sorry." He mumbled. I shook my head at his action, one that he's always been cautious of. If standing in just a bra and sweatpants wasn't caused by him, then he made sure to 'be respectful' as he called it.

"It's fine." I laughed, walking over to him. He started to turn towards me again as I let my new shirt settle over my shoulders. I gave him a small smile which he easily returned and I grabbed the hand that hadn't held the camera. "Come help." I insisted as I back up to my closet. He let out a small groan since he hated how picky I was about the clothes I wore.

"Do I have to?" He whined, sticking his bottom lip out at me. I stopped in my tracks and let go of his hand.

"Do you want to have a good party?" I cocked my head to the side, crossing my arms over each other and pulled up from the bottom of my shirt. I decided it was too uncomfortable and went with the idea of a dress.

He nodded his head slowly and he raised his eyebrows, his eyes quickly falling from mine down to my exposed torso, then back up. I rolled my eyes and started shuffling to the back of my closet in attempt to look for a certain black bodycon dress that actually wasn't mine, but one that was left at my house by a friend after graduation.

Just as I grasped onto the dress after a moment of frustration, a loud click was heard behind me. I stood up straight and immediately turned to Luke who was pulling the film from the slot it came out of. He took the white edge between his finger and thumb, gently waving it.

"What?" He chuckled, seeing that he caught onto my glare. I snatched the camera from his hands and snapped a picture of him and took the picture in between my finger just as he did, waiting for them to develop. "I wasn't ready!" He shouted grabbing the camera back from me.

"Neither was I!" I yelled back. I huffed as I slipped out of my sweats and into the dress, pulling it at different sides to get it to twist around my body the right way. I pinned my falling hair back with my fingers, pushing it back as I looked down from my dress and back up to Luke. This time along with a click a flash followed, practically blinding me.

"Would you stop that?" I rubbed my eyes and blinked a few times, watching him pull out more film. He set the two pictures he had in his hand, including the fresh one, right on my bed.

His fingers curled around my chin, pulling me to his lips and keeping me there for a few seconds. I could feel him smiling into me and before I could, he let go of me and took a step away from me, laughing to his own amusement a shaking a picture in his hand.

"Luke." I groaned, running my tongue over my bottom lip from where he had just been. I reached out for the picture and he turned his back to me to keep me from grabbing it. I kicked the back of his knee, getting his attention as he nearly toppled to the ground.

"I hate when you do that." He muttered, running a free hand through his hair.

"And I hate when you take sneaky pictures of me." I pulled the polaroid out of his hand and shook it carefully a few more times, watching as it was halfway developed. Luke walked closer to me, peering over my shoulder and down at the shot of us kissing.

"Aww." He cooed into my ear, placing a kiss against the side of my cheek. "How cute." He took it back out of my hands and walked to my bed, picking up the other pictures that laid there. He went to my bulletin board and pressed a thumbtack through all of them, adjusting the so they were straight.

"Are you ready yet?" His head fell to the side, his eyes trailing my body. I inhaled deeply, sighing as my breath left my lips. I nodded once, giving him an assuring smile.

I paced around my house in search for Luke, weaving through the sea of people. I stopped once I caught a glimpse of his blonde hair peaking through a few familiar heads and I had found him at one side of a ping pong table that was brought up from my basement and was about to toss the plastic ball into a cup full of God knows what. I pushed through the crowd, Luke instantly spotting me.

"Hey, Aut-" I grabbed the front of his shirt and dragged him to the back of my kitchen, people whistling and cheering at us even though my intentions were the opposite of what they were thinking.

"This is not the 'thirty or so' people you said were coming." I let go of his shirt, but kept my distance close, quietly scolding him.

"Relax, Autumn." He laughed, raising a hand to push my hair from my face which I easily dodged. I glanced over to my back door, seeing the same smoke flow through the air as it as for the past hour.

"There are people smoking joints on my back deck."

"Maybe you need one." He mumbled as he took a sip from his cup.

"No!" I shouted, glaring at him. "'Relax, Autumn.'" I scoffed, putting his words in air quotes. "Have you been smoking?" I put emphasis on the word you, making sure to get my point across that I wasn't happy with the turnout. Half as many people here would've been a lot better.

"No, not at all. I don't even do drugs and you know that." He shook his head quickly as he furrowed his eyebrows at me, then his expression falling soft. I sighed, looking around my house, losing count of how many cups were on the floor and tables.

"It's 11 now, there are probably a hundred people in and outside of my house. After midnight people will start to scatter, right?" My tone turned easy, not wanting to get worked up over something I was supposed to be enjoying. Catching up with old friends was great and having a drink or two was even better, but when strangers started piling in with more booze, I wasn't too sure how to feel.

"That's usually how it goes." He assured. I nodded once and felt him slip his hand into mine. "Come on." He said and started pulling us away from the kitchen.

"Where are we going?" I asked him, or more the back of his head.

"Your room." He answered smoothly.

"What if there's people in there?" I nudged closer to him as we continued walking.

"That stuff only happens in movies, come on." He repeated his words and started to pull me up the stairs, both of us saying hi to the people on the steps with lingering eyes on us.

We got the my room, easily shutting the door behind me. Luke was already sitting on my bed, playing with the covers that were frayed at the end.

"Can I ask you about something?" His voice broke the silence between us, even though the music and shouts beneath us were easily heard. I sat down next to him, a nervous feeling building in my stomach.

"Sure, anything." I gave him a gentle smile as he fiddled with his lip ring, staring at me a few moments before he started digging through his back pocket.

A crumpled sheet of paper was in his hand, it was neatly folded though. His fingers slowly opened it and the smeared ink read the words I feared a few months ago. We were both staring at the paper that read the words, "When did I fall in love with my best friend?"

"I found this on the floor in your room a while ago." He explained, handing the paper to me. "Um, I noticed it was your handwriting and I just didn't know when the right time to actually ask about it was." He shrugged his shoulders lightly.

I folded the note up and laid it beside me, my stomach erupting with butterflies for no reason.

"I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I like you." I sighed, looking up to Luke and his soft eyes. His lips were pulled into a small sigh. "And I think I've made that obvious." I giggled.

"More than obvious." He added, bumping into my shoulder with his. I playfully glared at him and shifted to were I sat Indian style facing him.

"But, I'm not sure about a few things. Maybe I love you, maybe I don't. Maybe I actually hate you, but something is going to come along that's going to make things very clear to me." I was probably rambling at this point, I was never very good at explaining my feelings and that's why the idea of showing them came into my mind.

I crawled into Luke's lap, a leg on either side of him. He had leaned back into his hands to get a better view of me, his breath clearly hitching.

"And I think I might know." I quietly said, putting my hands on his shoulders, gripping onto them. His eyebrows furrowed at me as he sat back up, his hands trailing up from my thighs to my hips.

"Are you implying that-"

"Yeah." I breathed out, cutting him off. A smile twitched at his lips then he leaned into me, putting his lips on my neck softly, practically hovering.

"Are you sure?" He muttered as his hair tickled against the side of my face. I leaned away from him at started laughing, him giving me a confused look again.

"Don't ask me that." And with my words he went straight to my lips, kissing me with little pressure.

We continued like this, everything soft and sweet, probably from Luke wanting to make my first time as enjoyable as he could. My fingers tied into his hair as he fell backwards onto my bed, not separating from me until a subtle thud was heard followed by a groan from Luke since on the way down he managed to smack his head on my wall. The perks of having my bed pushed against a wall.

We started giggling into each others lips, becoming more forceful as I played with the hem of his shirt which he immediately peeled off, separating us for a quick moment. He sat back up with me still in his lap, his hands wondering to the edge of my dress that was already hiked up.

He tugged it up and over my head with ease, giving me a thin smile. Our laughs mingled together again as I fell on my pillows. He had a hand on one side of me, the other fumbling to pull his jeans off. As he kicked them off I brought my lips to his neck, his shaky breath running over my skin.

My sheets covered our bodies that were now naked in mere seconds. I took a deep breath as his finger tips ran over my legs then he suddenly stopped, climbing out of bed and picking up his jeans and going through a pocket, pulling out a silver packet.

"Jesus Christ, Luke." I brought a hand to my forehead and shook my head.

"I forgot!"

"How do you manage to forget?" I asked.

"I'm nervous!" He shot back, a low laugh intertwining with his words.

"Why?" He crawled back towards me, lightly sighing. "If it makes you feel better I am too." I told him.

"Because you're you." He muttered against my skin, goosebumps raising on me as his hands ran down my side. "You're Autumn Saunders, my best friend of 12 years that happens to be really hot and has a nice butt."

"I hate you." I said as he started pulling my hips towards him.

"Mhmn." His fingers trailed back up my thighs again, getting himself in between them again. "No you don't." He placed a gentle kiss to my lips, burying his head into the crook of my neck.

I started to tangle my arms around his neck, running my fingers across the back of his neck, chants from downstairs being heard as people were starting to countdown to kick off the New Year.

"What a way to end and start the year." He muttered into my ear, easing his way into me. I winced slightly, my body tensing underneath him.

"Relax." His voice was soft and easy and he moved once more, possibly slower than before.

"Go." I pressed my nails into his shoulders, his hips moving against mine with ease.

For some reason, we found this funny. Most of the time we were sharing was filled with laughter and adjusting and gripping onto a ticklish spot, but it's what made the experience worth it. Between shaky laughs were soft moans and sharp breaths which would've been drowned out by everyone's shouts from downstairs if we were further apart.

Doors were slamming downstairs along with a few random shouts, but it seemed we were the only people in the house. My heart race had picked up along with our breaths, it was enough to push Luke over the edge, my name rolling off of his tongue with ease. Since I still felt an amount of discomfort, it wasn't enough for me, but it was the closest to euphoria I've been to.

Our bodies were sticking together, our hands tangled in each others hair once his paced slowed back down after a while. He sighed into my neck as my legs unhooked from around his waist and he eased out of me, as gentle as the start.

He fell to my side, clinging onto me tight. His fingers drew patterns on the skin right below the indent my bra had left, tickling my slightly. His lips pressed against my shoulders a few times as I played with his already messy hair.

I didn't know what to say, or what I should say. So we sat in silence for a few shorts moments until he decided to speak up.

He sighed first, something he'd done all night. He sat up just barely and left a lingering kiss at the corner of my mouth, us erupting into shushed giggles again.

"Happy New Year."
