Chapter 18
"You need to stop talking about him, Autumn." Luke told me from his upside down position on the side of my bed. I glanced at him once then continued shuffling with the things on my desk. It seems that when I left for college I hadn't exactly tidied up and had actually left my room pretty messy.
"It's hard not to." I sighed. I twisted side to side in my swivel chair as I organized the things in front of me. "When something that big happens all I want to do is rant about it." I explained.
"Then try not to rant about it." His voice was muffled from not being able to talk properly since he was upside down, so it took me a little longer to actually process what he was saying.
"I would if I could." I said, slightly irritated from his lack of understanding. I didn't blame him though as I didn't really understand why I myself was so hung up on it all. I wanted to push it away and forget about it, but it caused me enough emotional distress and really had an impact on me that I couldn't exactly forget about it.
"How about we do something to get your mind off of it?" He asked. He sat up and rolled over onto his stomach with his chin in his hands, watching me intently. I spun my chair to where I faced him and stared back.
"Like what?" I furrowed my eyebrows at him in curiosity than anything else. He seemed unpredictable lately. It's not that he was going off the rails, he was just becoming a bit more adventurous than I was used to.
"I don't know." He shrugged his shoulders and dropped his hands from his face. I watched as he laced his own fingers together and shifted closer towards my direction.
"That's a lot of help." I joked, half smiling at him. I stretched my legs out and slumped back into my chair. "There's nothing much to do at 8 at night." I said, looking back up at him. His eyes wandered around the room as he tapped on his chin.
"Are you hungry?" He suddenly asked.
"I mean, not really. We ate 2 hours ago." I answered as he rolled off my bed. He stood up and walked towards my door, digging around in his pockets.
"Good, let's go." He smirked, pulling out his car keys and spinning them around his finger. I raised an eyebrow at him as I began to stand up.
"Go where?" I followed him out into the hallway, still mumbling on about not knowing what he was talking about when he finally put a finger to his lips as we were halfway down the steps.
He led us into my living room where both of my parents were sitting and watching TV. I looked at Luke who was grinning ear to ear as he got my parents attention.
"Autumn and I are going to head out and go get some pizza." He announced. He knew my parents rarely ever said no to him, so something as simple as this was a for sure yes. Technically he didn't even need to ask since he was considered an adult by law, which he was beginning to use to his advantage.
"Alright." My mom lightly smiled back, looking over at my dad. Luke nodded his head towards the door as he was gesturing for me to follow him. "Be safe, alright?" She called out after us.
"'We will!" He yelled back, opening the door to let me out first as I had accustomed myself to. I stepped out without a word and I wrapped my arms around myself from the cold that had settled during the afternoon.
"Where exactly are we going?" I looked over my shoulder to see him stepping right behind me.
"I said we're getting pizza didn't I?" He mumbled with a small smirk. His hand rose to my lower back as we hopped down the stairs and towards his car.
"Where are we really going?" I glanced over at him once I scooted into the seat and waited for him to start his car.
"I just told you." He replied as he drove off and out from my driveway. His lips were pursed and his eyebrows were raised, something that told me he was 'stretching the truth' as he would call it.
"You're also a terrible liar." I laughed as I propped my feet up on his dashboard. He glared over at me while trying to focus on the road, swatting at my legs every few seconds.
"Get your feet off my dash." He whined.
"Not until you tell me where we're going." I answered, giving him a cheesy smile. He rolled his eyes as his smile grew a little wider as mine did too.
"It's a surprise."
-
"Luke, we're going to get mugged." It was the first thing I whispered to him as I clung onto his arm.
"We're not going to get mugged." He assured, letting out a gentle laugh. "It's a tattoo parlor, not the alleys down in Times Square." He kept walking towards the entrance like he'd been here a hundred times before. I gulped as we stepped inside, as it was late and there we a few older men hanging outside with cigarette smoking rolling from their lips.
It took us about half an hour to get down here from my house seeing that we used to live in the more modern part of town and not the city. And now that Luke had taken me to his surprise location, I felt beyond out of place. It wasn't an uncomfortable or awkward feeling, it was more of a nervous feeling since I had no clue how this night would end.
The bell rang from the inside of the parlor, letting the boy at the front counter lift his head at us. He had light brown hair that messily framed his face along with a set of dimples that matched Luke's. He looked familiar, but I couldn't quite put a finger on who he was. It was a surprise that he worked here since his arms were tattoo free and there was no sign of a piercing on him, he definitely didn't fit the stereotype I imagined.
"Luke!" The boy called out. I raised an eyebrow at him then over to Luke who was slipping out from my grasp around his arm. I followed closely behind him as he approached the counter and swapped hello's with the boys.
"Ashton, you remember Autumn right?" Luke said as he pulled me up to his side.
"Yeah. of course!" He beamed a smile at me which I returned with a small wave. I knew I've seen him somewhere and it was from Cianna's party a few month's back. I hadn't realized he lived this close to us. "So who's going first?" Ashton questioned as he pressed a few buttons on his register.
"Oh, I'm not-" I began, yet was cut off before I could go any further.
"I'll go first." Luke interrupted, peering down at my fallen expression. Ashton rubbed his hands together, leaving his spot behind the counter and made his way to the room that was visible through a glass window.
"I'm not getting a tattoo." I sternly said to him once we were out of earshot.
"Who said anything about tattoos?" He chuckled, weaving through the jewelry that was displayed throughout the shop.
"Then why are we here?" I became suddenly confused as Luke wasn't making any sense to me. I've never gotten a tattoo, let alone been inside a tattoo parlor so I wasn't exactly sure what was going down.
"I'm getting a piercing, Autumn." He stated as if I was supposed to know the information. He leaned against the glass cases even though there were at least a hundred signs telling him not to. "And so are you." He added, giving me a smug smile.
"Me? I never agreed to this." I shook my head at him, turning away from him to see Ashton through the glass getting what he needed ready. I stared back at Luke at shook my head at him. "Are you really going to let that kid stab a needle through your skin?" I said quietly.
"Yeah I am." He replied with more enthusiasm than I expected. We both cocked our head to the sound of the door to the smaller room opening.
"I'm ready when you are." Ashton's voice rang through the parlor, signaling for Luke to come in.
"Come on, you can think about what you want as I'm getting mine done." He suggested as he pulled my wrist to tug me to the room.
"I hope you're paying for this." I muttered.
"I already did." He told me with a grin pulling at the side of his lips. I let out a light groan seeing as there was no way out of this now. I stopped right outside the door, seeing that there was a sign saying that no one except workers and customers were allowed in. Ashton and Luke both exchanged glances then looked over at me.
"You can come inside if you want, just don't touch anything." Ashton chuckled. I nodded my head once and stepped inside, letting the nervous feeling reappear in my stomach.
Luke sat on the cushioned chair, one the resembled a dentist's chair, and laid back into it as Ashton had told him to. I watched as he pulled a metal tray over to him, grabbing a pair of clamps and an intimidating needle. I had suggested Luke was actually getting an ear piercing since he never clarified what it was, but was surprised once I saw that it was actually his lip that Ashton was about to pierce through.
"You have a big bottom lip." He laughed as Luke and I did too. He swiveled around in his chair to face me as grabbed the actual stud from the tray. He glanced up at me while he toyed with the lip ring. "Lucky lady you are." He smirked. My cheeks warmed up as Luke let out a loud yet short laugh, probably trying to cover up his own embarrassment.
"I'm not his girlfriend." I told him after a few seconds of us laughing. He intently watched what he was doing, careful not to actually stab Luke. I cringed slightly as I couldn't exactly tell how painful it was going to be to get whatever I was getting done.
"I never said you were." Ashton turned to me once again and fiddled with a few things on the tray, smiling with the similar smug face Luke had before. I rolled my eyes at him and left it there, not wanting to get to deep into the conversation.
"There you go." He said as he slid his chair back from him and stood back up. He walked over to the trash, throwing away his gloves and handing Luke a mirror.
I walked up behind Luke, bending over the back of the chair to get a view in the mirror he was holding. I never pictured Luke with a piercing, let alone one on his lip and to my surprise I actually really liked it. It suited him well and it seemed to make him look the slightest bit more attractive. Not that he wasn't before, but this definitely did something.
"It looks good." I smiled behind him and I'm suggesting he had noticed since he put the mirror down.
"What are you going to get?" Luke asked as he leaned his head back to gaze up at me. I tugged my lip between my teeth as I could only imagine what it was like to have a lip ring, yet I knew that wasn't what I wanted.
"You know," I began. "I have always wanted a nose ring since I was 15." I admitted. Luke smiled up at me, letting his new lip ring gleam from the bright light about us.
"Get it." He stated. I blinked a few times at him and brought my finger up to the side of his lips, tracing around the new stud. I was careful not to hit it since I knew it would be painful, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't mind since it drove him mad when I touched his face in any way.
"I will." I replied as I stood up straight. Luke sat up in his chair and stretched out his legs because apparently sitting in that chair for 5 minutes was too long for him. I walked around the side and sat next to him, noticing that his feet were able to hit the floor while mine dangled.
"Your mom is going to kill you." I giggled as I let my legs sing back and forth, occasionally hitting his own
"So is yours." He said as he nudged my shoulder softly. "At least we're legal adults and technically they can't do anything about." He pointed out. I parted my lips to keep adding on to our quiet conversation when Ashton came back in and grabbed both of our attention.
"Alright Autumn, what are you doing?" He leaned against the door frame with his forearm rested on the wood by his head.
"Just a stud in my nose." I told him, giving him a faint smile. He nodded his head at me then went through the same process he had done for Luke. I sat straight up in the chair as we waited a few minutes for everything to be sterilized and to make sure that I got exactly what I wanted.
I currently sat in my same spot, not moving the slightest bit in fear that this needle might actually go trough my eye if I flinched. I looked over at Luke who was holding back a laugh by biting onto his finger. I guessed it was from the metal tool that was actually inside my nostril. I was struggling to keep my laughter in as well, but once I felt a surprise pressure on my nose my smiled dropped knowing that there was now a diamond stud through my nose.
Ashton pulled away from me, giving the same 'done' he had given Luke. He handed me the mirror off of the counter and I immediately held it in front of my face. My nose was slightly red, but I was pleased with the job done. Just like Luke's, I liked it better than I expected.
"Aw." Luke cooed as he walked over to me. "I like it." He complimented.
"Thanks." I lightly laughed. I placed the mirror down next to me and shook my head at Luke who now stood in front of me. "I can't believe I let you talk me into this."
"But it turned out good." He pouted.
"That's true." I agreed. He looked over my head then leaned down towards me and placed a hand on either side of my thighs. The chair was a way from the ground so him getting down to my level wasn't difficult.
"Does it hurt?" He questioned out of concern. He was only a few inches from my face at this point and I couldn't stop getting distracted by the black stud he had. I shook my head a few times, lifting my hand to the side of his face. I brushed my thumb by his lip and they instantly twitched to a smile.
"Does yours hurt?" I asked, peering into his eyes that were a lighter blue from the amount of light being absorbed into them.
"Not at all." He mumbled as he leaned in to me and let his lips come in contact with mine. Just as I kissed back, he flinched back from me and we both let out quiet laughs.
"Maybe a little." He corrected while keeping little space between us.
"You taste like sea salt." I giggled, referring to the sea salt soak they used for the prevention of infection still lingered along his bottom lip.
"Better than tasting like pizza." He commented. I completely forgot about Luke telling my parents that we were going out and I couldn't help but laugh once again. I placed a light kiss near the opposite corner of his mouth in fear of putting him in pain again.
"Definitely."
