14-Off to Work
//Aneel
The weekend went really quickly. Like, really, really quick. We spent the rest of Saturday just lying down on the sofa and going through the channels searching for something to watch. It was always the case of I wanted to watch something she didn't like and she wanted to watch something I didn't like. Sunday was a bit more productive. Aisha felt a lot better so we went out for a walk around the park where she almost got chased by a dog. Almost.
I turned my head to the side and smiled when I saw her sleeping. She was so innocent, she has so much to see in this world. I kissed her head and she groaned in her sleep.
"Hey," I whispered into her ear. She groaned again and turned around. "Babe, I'm gonna start getting up for work, okay? I need to turn on the light. Just warning you in advance." I sighed when she didn't answer. Taking off the blanket, I slipped into my slippers and made my way to the door.
"It's cold," I heard Aisha say. I went back to the bed and kissed her cheek as I placed the second blanket over her. She insisted that she wanted another blanket since she felt cold last night. I went into the kitchen where I poured myself a glass of water. I then made my way to the storeroom and turned on the heater. I was fine. I wasn't cold or anything but I didn't want her to feel cold and get sick. Just as I was going to enter the bathroom, I heard the patter of her feet and turned my head. She was scratching her shoulder as she made her way to me.
"Aneel," she said.
"Aisha."
"What do you want for breakfast?" I shook my head and kissed her forehead.
"Don't. I'll make it myself. You go back to bed."
"No. What do you want for breakfast?" She looked up at me, wide awake. I sighed. So stubborn.
"Make whatever you want. I eat anything in the morning except rice."
"And why would I feed you rice in the morning?" She frowned at me as I shrugged my shoulders. "Are you gonna say something stupid?"
"Maybe," I dragged out. She sighed and walked past me. "Don't you wanna know what I'm gonna say?"
"Not if its something silly. God, Aneel, I have had it with your stupid comments yesterday. I thought you being older you would be a bit more mature but no." She walked back in front of me and frowned again. "Childish." I rolled my eyes and went into the bathroom. I heard her groan and laughed to myself. Like I always say, so easy to wind up.
As soon as I came out the bathroom, Aisha stepped in. I went over to the bedroom and found the covers already changed and the bed done up. As I looked again, I found one of my suits neatly placed on the bed with the shirt beside it. "Aisha!"
"Yes? Wait, let me wash my hands." She came out a minute later, wiping her hands on a towel. "Is there something wrong?"
"I can pick out my own clothes, you know." She looked over at the bed and back at me.
"Sorry," she whispered. She dropped the towel on the desk and quickly picked everything up and putting them back in the wardrobe. "Sorry," she said again. "I just...sorry." I laughed as I circled my arms around her waist. She frowned and looked down.
"Hey, I was just kidding. I find it cute that you got everything out." Her head snapped up and her eyes were wide. "And yes, really."
She smiled and lay her head on my chest. I heard her sigh and kissed the top of her head. "Do you have to go work? Why can't you just stay here?"
"Babe, if I had the choice of staying at home with your beautiful self everyday, I would run for that option. But life is life, you know?" She put her hands behind my neck as she looked up at me. "What's wrong?"
"I'm gonna miss you," she mumbled. I frowned and hugged her again. I kissed her shoulder and as usual, she squirmed.
"I'm not going far, you idiot. I'm a phone call away. You need anything and I'll make sure to get that done. You're acting as though I'm going away forever. I'll be back by six, latest is seven, okay? And hey," I said as I leaned back. She looked at me with a frown and I smiled. "It's work, babe. It has to be done. Trust me, I've cut down my hours for the next two months so we can both get settled in and if needed, I'll go back to those extended hours. I love you."
"I love you too." She sighed and pushed my arms away. "Big breakfast for a big day?" she asked with a smile.
"Not needed. You know I don't like anything too fancy and big. Just make some toast and we'll talk a bit, yeah?" She grinned and nodded her head. My beautiful, beautiful wife. I took out the clothes that Aisha picked out. A smile was glued to my face as I put them on. Here I was, standing in the clothes my wife picked out. With the tie in my hand, I walked into the kitchen where I found her drinking a glass of milk. I wrinkled my nose. Milk by itself: gross. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and straightened up.
"I want you to do my tie, please." Her eyebrows furrowed as she stepped forward. She's so lost.
"You know how to do- just give it." She took it off my hand gently and pulled my collar up. With a smile on her face, she began tying the tie. "So was it your idea? 'Cus the last time I saw my husband with a tie was when he did it for a bunch of little kids."
"Maybe. But maybe your husband is just trying to make his wife smile on a Monday morning. He knows how she loves the small romantic gestures." She laughed and patted my chest. I looked down and smiled when I saw she was all done. "Maybe, he loves her loads and loads and will also miss her terribly when he goes to work," I whispered. She stopped laughing and frowned.
"Stop it. You're the one that keeps saying its only for a couple of hours."
"I'm telling myself that, babes. I won't be able to see your beautiful face anymore. Or see you smile. I won't get to hold you when I feel upset. You know your hugs make everything better?"
"Do you want one now?" she said. I smiled before leaning down to give her a kiss. "Now?"
"I'll save it for later. But come on, let's just eat some breakfast and then I'll get a hug, three kisses and another hug and kiss."
"Oh really?" She said while raising her eyebrows. I gave her another kiss and put two breads in the toaster. "That counts as one."
I turned around to face her. "No it doesn't. I still get my kisses later." She mimicked me and walked into the sitting room. She sure is coming out of her shell a lot more. She came back with a glass in her hand and put it beside the sink. With a smile, she came and hugged me.
"I'm gonna cook today. What do you want to eat?" I let my hand rest on her back as I smiled.
"I just want some rice. Been days since I had the good old rice and curry. This is gonna be the first I have eaten your cooking." She rolled her eyes.
"I've cooked you food before."
"Yes. But not as my wife. This is the first proper meal we are gonna eat that you cooked." She laughed and took out the butter from the fridge. "Am I the only one super excited about this?" I asked with a frown. She shook her head with another laugh and kissed my cheek.
"What do you want? Chicken? Meat? Fish?"
"Whatever you want to cook, babe." Aisha jumped when the toast was ready. I chuckled and kissed her cheek before taking them out. With her cheeks blushing, she took out a butter knife and put some butter on all the breads. I took out the peanut butter and she wrinkled her nose. "I still don't know why you don't like it. You eat peanuts all the time."
"It's different though. Get that away from me. Put it on yourself." She moved away from me and took her toast with her.
With a sigh, I opened the peanut butter and spread it over my toast. Once it was away, I went and sat beside her on the table. She was sitting there, staring into space, her toast untouched. I kissed the top of her head and she jumped up. "Where you going?" I asked her.
"Nothing. I was just thinking about my mum." I sat down and she faced me. "Do you think she is proud of me?"
"Of course she is proud of you, Aisha. Don't ever question it." She sighed and picked up one of her toast and bit into it. She was silent as she ate the rest of the toast. And silent when she ate the other one. Once I was finished, I put a hand on her shoulder and she jumped up again. "I told you not to question it."
"I'm not. I'm just gonna miss you, that's all." I sighed knowing she was lying. I didn't ask any further but pulled her from her seat and onto my lap. "What are you doing?"
"I'm gonna say goodbye to my wife. I don't know, what are you doing?"
"Gonna say goodbye to my perverted husband." I chuckled and leaned my forehead against hers. "I love you."
"I love you too." She smiled. That smile. I would do anything to see that smile on her face. The subtle smile. The one that I know she truly means.
"When do you have to leave?"
"In about five minutes. But i would probably leave now since the car is gonna be freezing and I need it to warm up a bit." She frowned and got off my lap, standing beside me. I kissed her once again and walked over to the door. She gave me my bag and my phone with a small smile. "Call me if you need anything, yeah? And if you can't reach me then try the other guys yeah?" She nodded her head and gave me a hug. "I love you."
"I love you too. Now go, you don't want to be late." I reached into my pocket and took out a set of keys.
"I got an extra key but forgot to give you one. Here is the key for the front and the key for our door. Oh, and this one is for that one just out here." She took the keys off me and gave my blazer in my hand. "Thanks. Almost forgot about that."
"What would you do without me?" she joked. I stopped doing what is was doing and stared at her. What would I do without her? I put a hand on her waist and kissed her cheek. "You need to go."
"Getting rid of me? I'll only go if I get one more kiss," I said. She raised an eyebrow before laughing. She pushed me away and opened the door. "Oh, that's harsh. You have to greet me with a kiss when I return."
"Oh, you wish."
