Chapter 3

"Okay," started Sophie. "So pretty much, some author has been writing a book about us for ever since Fitz found me and told me I was an elf. We need to read the books, which are from my perspective, so that we can see if the level of danger from exposure is dire or mediocre. We'll work from there."

Biana, Keefe, and Dex nodded. The group of five began walking to the library, extremely conspicuous among the human crowd despite their costumes. At one moment, it got so bad that they had to hide behind a wall and have Dex turn the obscurer back on.

Once they reached the library, Sophie moved to go ask for the books when Fitz grabbed her arm.

"Remember we're on the covers?" He reminded. "You can't just walk in there, asking for a book that has a character on the cover looking just like you."

Sophie sighed. "Well, neither can you," she pointed out, remembering the cover of Book 3. "As a matter of fact me, you, Keefe, or Dex can't go. The only person that can go is Biana."

Biana frowned. "Why am I not on any of the covers?" She asked, looking slightly hurt.

"You're on the cover of Book 4," consoled Sophie. "But that hasn't come out yet. So you're the only one who can ask for the books."

Biana sighed. "Fine. Just tell me what they're called."

"Keeper of the Lost Cities," Sophie remembered. "And call yourself Becca if they ask for your name."

Biana crinkled her nose. "Ew that's so human."

Sophie shrugged. "That's kind of the point." Stepping out of the obscurer, Biana walked toward the information desk. She and the librarian talked for a few moments until the librarian lead her to a bookshelf in the children's section. Under the invisibility of the obscurer, the other four elves followed. Then, all five sat in a dark corner, the three books in Biana's hands.

"Okay," she said. "Who wants to read them?"

Keefe backed away slightly. "Books are not my thing. You guys can go ahead and read them."

"Okay," Sophie relented. "But I think we should read them out loud so we can all figure out what happens. But we need a library card to check them out. Dex, can you hack into the system?"

"On it," answered Dex, sliding into the nearest computer. "This is really slow technology. But I think I got it. What do you want our username to be?"

Sophie shrugged. "How about 'LetsDoThis101'?"

Dex laughed. "Well that's motivating. Okay I'm gonna make our password BlackSwan." He whispered the last part and hit the enter key, successfully creating a fake account that would fool the librarians. Soon, all three books were checked out, once again by Biana.

"Would you like to preorder Book 4?" The librarian asked. "Hey wait a second... You look a lot like the girl on the cover!"

Biana gave a nervous laugh. "Yeah I get that a lot," she lied. "My friend says I'm lucky that I look like her favorite character."

"Well you definitely do," agreed the librarian. "Here are your books. They're due in 3 weeks."

"Thank you!" said Biana in her strong elvin accent. She grabbed the books and walked out with the other four following. They found a small bench by a park and began reading.

"Book 1," started Sophie. She started reading until she reached the part where she met Fitz, abruptly stopping on one line that talked about how she thought he was cute. "Um... These are kind of my thoughts..."

"Oh stop being so mysterious, Foster," said Keefe, grabbing the book out of her hands. He raised his eyebrows. "Oh, this is good."

Dex leaned over and read the line, shouting "I knew it!" Soon, even Biana had read the line. Fitz was about to read it, when Sophie grabbed the book out of Biana's hands.

"Okay maybe we shouldn't read these. After all, they are from my perspective."

"Wait," Fitz asked. "Why can everyone else read it but me?"

Biana gave Sophie a pointed look. "I can't believe you-"

Sophie cut her off. "I think I'll just read these on my own and then tell you guys if anything is important. Besides, it's not too much too read. Just three books."

Fitz sighed. "Okay fine. But where are you going to read it? With this situation, I don't think we can risk going to the Black Swan, and it's not like we can go back to the Lost Cities."

He had a point. If they were going to stay in Florence over night, they needed a place to stay. Luckily, this wasn't America and you didn't need to be 18 to book a hotel. "I have an idea," Sophie said. "Why don't we book a hotel and stay over night there? I can read all three of the books and we can plan in the morning. As for money... Dex, do you think you can trick another ATM?"

Dex nodded. "I'm on it." He walked up to a nearby ATM and pressed a few buttons, soon walking back to them with a fist full of money. "Is this enough?" he asked.

Sophie nodded. She pulled out her iPod, which Dex had upgraded, and searched for the nearest hotel using WiFi connection from a nearby café. The five elves walked to the hotel and booked a room, crashing down on the tiny beds. They were no elf beds with plush blankets and wide mattresses, but they were better than being stranded in the middle of Italy. After ordering dinner with room service and getting settled, Sophie pulled out the books.

"Are you really reading this late?" asked Keefe, pointing to the clock that was inching closer to midnight. Sophie shrugged.

"What choice do I have? I need to finish these books tomorrow," she pointed out. After a moment, Fitz walked out of the tiny bathroom wearing the same pajamas he, Keefe, and Dex had worn the day before. It seemed like so long ago, them leaving, and so far away. Grabbing his clothes, Keefe walked in. Biana and Sophie had already changed before.

"Will you finally let me read that?" asked Fitz, pointing to the closed Book 1, lying on the table. Sophie sucked in a sharp breath. The book had already mentioned multiple times how much she liked Fitz, but it wasn't like she could tell him that.

"It's just... It has so many of my thoughts and feelings," she tried to explain.

Fitz frowned. "But you let Biana, Keefe, and Dex read it. Besides, I thought you trusted me."

Realizing she wasn't going to win this argument, Sophie handed the book over to him with trembling hands. Before he opened it, she whispered one last caution, "Just... please don't judge me."

Fitz moved closer and looked at her with those beautiful teal eyes. "I don't think anything in this book would make me think lesser of you, Sophie." And with that, he opened the book to the page they had stopped before.

A/N: Oh man he's gonna read it! But what will he say? Sorry for the cliffhanger, but I'll make sure to update tomorrow!
