Chapter 12

A/N: I'm baaack! And with a new chapter too! Most of the things I listed on the hiatus were fixed, besides the internship, which I'm still looking for. Also, did anyone else watch Star Wars on Friday? It was amazing! I won't spoil anything, but I'm a huge fan of the franchise, so the movie was totally epic. Also, I got a Neverseen poster for my birthday, so that's the picture above. I know I said I'd post in Winter Break, but I began writing again and things happened sooner than I thought. So here's the long awaited chapter!

With a deep breath, Sophie began walking downstairs, still unable to believe that her first date would be in the Forbidden Cities... With Fitz. When she reached the bottom staircase, she spotted him.

He was wearing a black suit with a white shirt and red tie inside, human style. His teal eyes sparkled as he gave her a movie-star worthy smile, but when her eyes flickered back to the tie, she realized it was untied.

"What happened to your tie?" she asked, her lips curling upwards.

Fitz gave her an embarrassed smile. "I didn't know how to tie it," he admitted.

He was the most powerful Telepath besides her, the one who had helped her save the elvin world. But he didn't know how to tie a tie. The notion made her grin as she adjusted it around his neck and flipped it between her fingers, quickly tying it.

"How do you know how to tie it?" Fitz asked, his eyebrows raised. Sophie laughed.

"Let's just say that a lot of guys in human high school needed to tie ties for internships," she remembered. "After seeing someone do it so many times, you kind of pick it up."

Fitz laughed and stepped back, eyeing Sophie's dress.

"Wow," he murmured. "You look... Beautiful."

Sophie's face felt warm and her heart fluttered as she replied. "So do you. I mean, thanks. I mean-"

Fitz grinned and held out his hand. "You ready?" he asked.

Without hesitation, she took it. Smiling, she walked into the kitchen to spot Keefe and Dex.

"Wow Foster," Keefe complimented. "You clean up nicely."

Sophie suddenly felt an urge to stare at the floor with all the emotions bubbling up inside of her. Behind her, she heard pounding against the floor as Biana ran down to hand her the purse she had forgotten upstairs.

Biana gave her a slightly wicked smile as her eyes flickered to Sophie and Fitz's hands. Without another word she, Keefe, and Dex left to the movie room to go watch something.

Just as they left, Mrs. Messenger walked in and smiled at them. She held her hands out and tilted her head to the side.

Finally, she spoke. "You both make such a cute couple."

Sophie's face turned as red as her dress as she muttered a quick "Thank you." Both elves followed Mrs. Messenger into the small car as she drove them to the restaurant where they had booked their reservation.

"Curfew is at nine," she told them, stopping in front of the entrance. "Try not to be too conspicuous. And, enjoy yourselves."

Sophie nodded and Fitz thanked Mrs. Messenger as they stepped out of the car and walked into the extravagant building.

"I never thought my first date would be in the Forbidden Cities," Fitz marveled.

Sophie tilted her head sideways. "This is your first date?" she asked, more than surprised.

Fitz nodded. "I'm guessing it's yours too?"

Sophie gave him an embarrassed nod as he held the door open for her, following soon after. They walked to the woman standing by the podium and gave their names.

"Table of two for Vacker," Sophie told the woman with black hair and dark brown eyes, darker than her's. The woman searched through the pages and frowned.

"How do you spell that?" she asked, scrunching her shaped eyebrows together. Sophie looked desperately at Fitz, realizing the name was in the Enlightened Language, not English.

"Um," she stalled. Suddenly, she heard a deep voice inside her head

I think it's V-A-C-K-E-R.

Sophie relaxed visibly. "V-A-C-K-E-R."

The woman raised her eyebrows and flipped to the last page. "Oh, here it is," she said. "Follow me."

Sophie and Fitz followed her through the maze of tables to a small booth with two seats across from each other, next to a window. The woman handed them two menus and told them a waiter would be able to take their order soon.

Sophie nervously flipped through the menu. "So..."

"Wow," Fitz marveled, looking at the menu. "This is a lot of options. I have no idea what to pick."

"I think you'd like the pasta," Sophie suggested. "Or pizza. Your choice."

"How about I order pasta and you order pizza?" Fitz compromised. Sophie smiled and soon gave the waiter the order.

Suddenly, she heard a shifting of a seat in the booth behind her and a woman with a strong French accent spoke.

"Pardon my interruption," she apologized to Sophie in English. "But what language are you two speaking?"

Sophie's eyes widened. "Um..."

"I majored in languages," the woman explained. "I know over fifty languages, but I have never come across a dialect so complex as to the one you are speaking."

"It's not a very common language," Sophie lied. "As a matter of fact, there are only one hundred people in the whole world who speak it."

Fitz sent her a panicked transmission.

What is she asking?

She's asking what language we're speaking.

The Enlightened Language.

Well I can't tell her that!

"I see," understood the woman. "Does it originate from Latin, or is it more Asia based?"

Sophie shook her head. "Neither. It doesn't even have an English name. That's why it is so uncommon."

The woman nodded. "Thank you and I am extremely sorry for interrupting your..."

"Date," Sophie finished for her. "That's my boyfriend, Fitz. And my name is Sophie."

Saying the words made it feel more real, somehow. From across the table, Fitz squeezed her hand and smiled at her.

The woman smiled. "Those truly are beautiful names," she complimented. "And it is more than obvious that you two are in love." Her eyes sparkled mischievously.

Sophie's face warmed. "Thank you," she replied, turning back to Fitz. He grinned at her.

"Boyfriend, huh?" he teased.

Sophie shook her head. "I can't believe it myself."

He laughed. "So... What do we do after this?"

"I don't know," Sophie admitted. "I guess we just go to the Black Swan and continue our training."

Fitz nodded. "I hope we get to be Cognates."

"Cognates?" Sophie repeated. "What are Cognates?"

Fitz's eyes sparkled in the dim lighting of the restaurant as he took a piece of pizza that had been set on their table.
"They're two Telepaths with a unique connection," he explained. "They can do all these amazing things, but they have to share all their secrets."

Sophie shrugged. "Well you already know that I like you," she recalled. "There's not really any other big secret I would keep from you." She spooned some pasta into her plate.

Fitz nodded. "And you already know about Mr. Snuggles," he laughed.

Sophie laughed along with him, remembering the sparkly red dragon. She turned to the window next to them, expecting to see the lit-up city, but instead a white patch came into her view with a black eye on it.

The Neverseen.

A/N: Cliffhanger, muahahaha! Do any of you like Star Wars? I know I'm supposed to ship Rey and Finn, but I can't help feeling like Kylo Ren may like Rey. I won't say his real name because spoilers, but I don't know. Anyway, glad to be back!
