"We need to keep moving," Jaxx reminded the others, trying to keep the anxiety from his tone.

The sun seemed to dip lower beneath the horizon. Jaxx held his knife tighter. It wasn't safe to be out at night, especially not at a time like this.

They'd been making slow progress throughout the entire afternoon. Gwynth couldn't walk without putting herself in excruciating pain. Katherin's wound was still spitting blood, a constant reminder of the hell she'd just been through.

The skin around Katherin's lips had started to turn blue, her skin cold and clammy. She'd die if she didn't get medical supplies soon.

There were supplies at the apartment. They just needed to get there.

"Just give me another moment!" Gwynth gritted her teeth, pushing herself to her feet.

Morgana slipped Gwynth's arm over her shoulder, hoping to ease some of Gwynth's pain by taking some of the weight. The relief was slight, but appreciated. Gwynth had started to see black spots in her vision, her body fighting her to rest.

"Are you sure you're okay?" Morgana turned her head, eyeing Katherin in concern.

Katherin shivered, rubbing her hands over her upper arms.

For a moment, Morgana wasn't sure that she'd answer. Katherin hadn't spoken for hours, too lost in her own thoughts to answer anyone's questions. It was surprising, really. Katherin had been through hell.

Morgana had sworn that Katherin had whispered the little boy's name before. What was it? Edward? Katherin had been torn up over his death, but Jaxx was adamant that they'd done the right thing. Morgana wasn't so sure. Katherin had been right. Edward had only been a boy. He didn't deserve to die, not like that.

"What? Yeah, I'm fine," she shook her head, twisting her lips into a smile. Everything was starting to become unfocused, blurry. She wondered how much longer she'd be able to survive. Would she get to see Esther again before she collapsed?

"We're almost there," Jaxx muttered softly.

The others didn't respond, too consumed by their own woes.

Jaxx didn't know what to do about his injured friends. During his training as a cadet, he'd learnt basic medical aid, but nothing as serious as this. The best he could do was make a splint to support Gwynth's leg, but she'd refused the treatment, saying it would take too long to make. Jaxx had agreed, hesitantly. Katherin's injury was priority. She would die if they didn't get help quickly.

The apartment block was shrouded by fog.

Jaxx heard a groan, too guttural to be fully human. He braced his knees, holding his knife in anticipation.

The fog lessened slightly. Jaxx caught a glimpse of the intruders.

There was a horde of zombies. Jaxx could count twenty, but he could guarantee that there were more.

They wouldn't be able to fight off such a large horde, especially not with two injured. It would be a death sentence.

They had to try, though. The others could still be inside. Katherin needed immediate medical aid, and Rosabelle was the only one who could help her. She'd trained as a nurse and would know what to do.

They just needed to get to the others.

"Fuck. We need to get through that horde," Katherin groaned.

Morgana clenched her teeth. They weren't going to survive a horde, not by themselves. It was too dangerous to go on foot. They'd be swarmed immediately.

There was a car down the road. Morgana lifted Gwynth's arm from around her shoulder, gently lowering her friend to the ground.

"I'll be back," she muttered.

Jaxx grabbed Morgana's arm.

"Wait," Jaxx spoke intently. "I'll come with you. It's too dangerous down there."

Morgana shrugged him off.

"What about Katherin and Gwynth? They need you right now."

Jaxx shook his head. He didn't want Morgana to go alone, not when there were so many zombies. If she made any noise, then the zombies would surround her. She'd be slaughtered before anyone could help her.

"She's right, Jaxx," Gwynth spoke softly. She cradled her leg, touching the swollen lump that had started to blacken. The pain was getting worse.

"She'll be alone!" Jaxx responded.

"No, she won't be," Katherin's response was soft, barely audible.

Jaxx shook his head, his eyes widening.

"You're injured. What if they can smell blood?"

"Zombies aren't sharks," Katherin responded.

She pulled herself to her feet, grunting as a wave of dizziness overcame her body. Jaxx was right. Morgana couldn't go alone. It was too dangerous. Besides, Morgana didn't have the skills to hijack a car, especially under pressure.

In any other situation, Katherin would have told Gwynth to go with her. This was different, though. If Gwynth put any more pressure on her leg, she could break it. That would slow her down, make her vulnerable to zombies.

Katherin was already injured. She was already a liability.

"Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Jaxx tried again, one last attempt at stopping Katherin.

Katherin shook her head, hefting her weapon as she went to stand next to Jaxx.

"No, idiot. I'm trying to save yours."
