Messages

Yoongi picked up his phone the hundredth time that day. He couldn't bring himself to send the message. He had it all typed out in the message bar to "Jung Hoseok" but he just couldn't click on 'send'. What if it was too cheesy? What if it sounded wrong? What if Hoseok thought he was a creep? Strange, irrational questions started invading his mind. Finally, he gave it up and went down to the dining hall.

Taehyung had come over to spend Christmas Day with Yoongi and Jungkook. The three of them were living in a city that was a five hour drive from where their families resided. Since Yoongi had a secure job, he had offered to look after Tae and Kookie so that they could finish their higher studies where there was a well known and highly acclaimed University. While Jungkook lived with him, Tae's parents had insisted he live with a distant relative. As a result, Tae was found in Yoongi's house most of the time, being closer to the two brothers than to his uncle and aunt.

Right now, Kookie and Tae were having an intense video game competition. Jungkook lost to Tae, for the fourth time in a row and set down his console in a huff, arms crossed, and lips set in a stubborn line. When he caught sight of Yoongi, he got up, walked to his brother and gave him a hug, "Merry Christmas!"

Tae looked up from switching off the game and yelled, "Merry Christmas!"

Yoongi smiled fondly at the boys, "Merry Christmas! I see you've already opened your presents."

Jungkook grinned from ear to ear. He pointed at an unopened pile of presents. His meaning was clear. He wanted his brother to open them.

"Oh alright," Yoongi walked up to the pile and sat down next to it. There were five neatly wrapped boxes. Yoongi frowned. That was one extra. He shrugged. Someone must have given him two. He picked up the first box. A present from his parents. Inside was the most beautiful Bluetooth speaker and headphones he had ever seen. He grinned childishly. Trust his parents to know exactly what he needed and wanted. The next one was from his boss, Namjoon. They had been friends for a long time and knew each other rather well. He'd bought Yoongi gift vouchers from several of his favourite shops in town. Trust him to be so practical. Yoongi smiled.

"Mine next! Mine next!" Tae jumped up and down in excitement.

"Alright."

In it was a picture frame that had a collage of all the wonderful times Tae, Jungkook, and Yoongi had spent together. It nearly brought tears to Yoongi's eyes. He got up and hugged Tae, "Thank you so much!"

Jungkook's present was an interesting one. It was a pack of board games. Yoongi looked at him, a question in his eyes. Jungkook smiled, "So that we can continue to make memories together and are not always stuck to the Internet and our jobs and studies."

Yoongi was touched, to say the very least. He gave Jungkook one of his rare gummy smiles.

"Who is the fifth one from?" Kookie asked.
"That's from the dancer, Jung Hoseok. Before we left the rink last night, he told me to put it in your Christmas pile."

Yoongi looked at Tae in surprise. Why hadn't he said anything before? He quickly unwrapped the box and found a pretty card inside. It said, "Merry Christmas Suga! I do hope you haven't forgotten me already. Looking forward to seeing you again!"

Yoongi stared at the card for a long time. He felt a sense of happiness blooming right where his heart was. Jungkook took the piece of paper from his hand. He frowned, "Suga? What does this mean? Who does he think he is, writing like this to you?"

Yoongi smiled at his brother, "It's alright, he's a friend."

Jungkook looked surprised, "Alright. If you say so."

***

Jungkook was rather surprised at his brother. Yoongi hated nicknames. He hardly ever called anyone a friend. Everyone was an acquaintance. This change was a rather pleasing one and Jungkook was grateful to the dancer for bringing it about. Maybe street dancers weren't bad and maybe this one, this Jung Hoseok, would be good for his brother. He smiled.

"Jungkook, does this sound okay, or is it too creepy?" Yoongi burst into his room, holding out his phone. In it was a message, typed out for Jung Hoseok that said, "Thanks for the card. Would you like to meet me today for coffee, at the café near the museum?"

Jungkook suppressed a delighted giggle. He said, "It sounds perfect. Go ahead and send it." As Yoongi left the room, he yelled, "Don't forget to tell me when he replies!"

Yoongi smiled at his brother's excited tone. He then turned his attention to his phone. Hoseok was typing already.

Hoseok: Hey! That would be great! What time?

Yoongi: 4?

Hoseok: I'll be there!

Yoongi grinned in victory. Today would be a good day.
