Chapter 5
Third person
Years passed and the two only grew closer. They were best friends. Each of them only had one friend: the other. But they were happy with that. Neither of them thought that they really needed anyone else.
Leo was now fifteen years old, turning sixteen in a month. He was now allowed to roam as he pleased as long as he was back by dawn. Any later would cause him pain and punishment from his parents.
Blake was sixteen and had always been allowed to explore. One of his parents was an adventurer after all. Finn encouraged his curious nature. It gave them something to bond over.
Leo had woken up as soon as the sun sunk into the horizon. Technically he could sleep and wake up whenever he pleased, but it was easier to sleep during the day because of the sunlight. Blake was also used to seeing his companion after dark.
Leo dressed in a t-shirt and cargo shorts -his usual casual attire- and grabbed his umbrella, just in case the sun rose a bit early. The two boys had been meeting at the pond nearly every day since they were kids. It just seemed natural to them.
Blake made his way through the dark forest, being his own source of light. Leo simply saw through the darkness, his vampire nature giving him heightened senses.
By now Blake had learned to control his heat. The only time it was difficult to control was when he was angry. This was a good thing because he no longer had to feel guilty about burning his friend.
The two hugged when they saw each other. It had been a few days since they saw each other last and all they thought about during that time was each other. The boys were very happy when they were together. Something about simply being in the presence in the other made them happy.
It should have been obvious that they had feelings for each other, but it wasn't. Neither of them had any other friends. They both just assumed that this was how a normal friendship felt. They were essentially friend-zoning themselves.
Perhaps if they had other friends they would realize their feelings for each other. Unfortunately it didn't seem like they were going to have any other friends. They had been best friends for ten years now. It didn't seem like there would really be room for a third friend.
The two sat on the bank of the pond. Blake was careful not to touch the water because it would make him sizzle and hurt him. It was pretty much the only thing that hurt him. There were two things that hurt Leo: sunlight and wooden stakes.
Basically as long as the friends stayed out of the sun, away from the beach, and didn't find any sharp wooden objects they would be fine. They learned each other's weaknesses so they could be careful. They really did care about each other. All they had to do now was realize what their feelings for each other were.
