3. Sweetheart
"I don't understand why you do this," Ara asked.
Eve looked up at her sister, raising an eyebrow.
"Do what, exactly?" She asked.
"Continue with this disrespectful treatment! Eve, you are a very resourceful and determined person. You should know, this coming from me is really unusual. You'd easily land a new job, around here, somewhere," Ara stated firmly.
Eve sighed and twirled a stray strand of black hair with her pen.
"I don't know, Ara. Steve and I.......he just needs time, that's all....."
"For the love of God, Eve! He's broken up with you over a text. What kind of faithful boyfriend who just proposed to you even even does that? And let me also remind you, the staff doesn't treat you any better! You need to stay as far away from him as possible. Don't marry him. And that also means leaving your job as the editor and finding a new one." Ara ordered.
Even though Eve was the eldest, Ara showed more confidence and authority than Eve had ever shown in all her twenty four years of existence. And that's why, she always got run over. Run over in a queue at the coffee shop, cheated by a salesman at the boutique, and in the end, left by her only love. She knew Ara had a point, but she didn't really want to take the risk. What if she didn't land another job? What if Steve found out and laughed at her for it?
"There's no point over thinking it," Ara began, quieting down Eve's doubts.
"You are resigning tomorrow, first thing in the morning. And then, we'll grab breakfast from Rose's and we'll search for a better job for you." She finished, not giving Eve any choice.
Eve nodded her head and relaxed in her chair, wondering how she would do it.
Tomorrow, Eve thought, is going to be a hard day.
_______________
Eve had forced Ara to have breakfast before she faced her boss/ex boyfriend. And now, she was standing in his office.
"You're doing what?" Steve stood up from his plush office chair and stared at her with wide eyes.
"I'm resigning. Here's my resignation letter." Eve said, exactly how she'd rehearsed with her sister.
"What!?" Steve repeated, dumbstruck.
"I don't remember stuttering," Eve said coolly, enjoying the look on his face.
"But--but Eve! Sweetheart, you can't this..."
Maybe it was the constant pressure of losing her beloved job that made her do what she did next. Or, it was just plain fury. The next minute, Steve was cursing and holding his now broken, bloody nose. Eve looked at her knuckles, now throbbing slightly. She looked at him, horrified. But then she remembered Ara's words.
He deserves it.
A gleeful smile played on her lips and she crossed her arms across her chest.
"Oh you—My nose!! It's freaking bleeding!!" He yelled.
Eve thanked her mother for teaching her and her sister how to defend themselves and to maintain a good physique. Steve cursed some more, but Eve ignored. She felt great, just like how Ara had predicted. She slammed her resignation letter on his obsidian black desk, and paused for a moment.
"I'll be taking my leave now, Mr. Willis." She sneered, and turned to leave.
Before stepping out of the door, she remembered something and turned towards him again.
"Oh, and by the way, I'm expecting my pay for the year to follow up ASAP. You know, as mentioned in my contract. Good day!" She cheered and walked out the office.
Her hands trembled with excitement and enthusiasm. She felt great. In fact, Eve hadn't felt this way in years. She couldn't wait for Ara to return home and tell her everything that happened. Eve realised how much of a bastard Steve was. She knew he'd been cheating on her, but she'd hoped her being quiet about it would make him a little guilty. She thought he would realise and come and apologize. But of course, he never did. He still pretended to be in love with her, all the while physically involved with another woman.
Steve's baffled and pained expression flashed in front of Eve's eyes once again as she walked down the pavement. She let out an obnoxious giggle, earning looks from confused civilians as they passed her by. She went and grabbed a latte from a nearby coffee shop, and ended up buying a box of a dozen donuts to munch on. The thought of searching for another job burdened her, but not as much as it did earlier. She had her sister, and together, they were unstoppable. No company will deny her editorial qualities and experience.
She called a taxi, and was soon settled as the driver drove her towards her house. She took a sip from her latte, and scrolled down the texts in her phone. Ten missed calls, sixty texts. All from Steve. With a chuckle, Eve deleted all of them. She kept checking, when she received a text from Ara.

She smiled to herself and put her phone back into her bag. She watched the buildings go by, people walking as usual. She leaned her head back and relaxed. Eve felt drained in a good way. For what had drained her was worth it.
"Tired, Ma'am?" The driver, a middle aged Asian man, asked.
"Very," she replied.
A few minutes later, the taxi stopped in front of her house. Eve rummaged her bag for the cash and handed it to the driver.
"It's okay, keep the change," she insisted as she go out of the car.
"Thank you, ma'am!" The driver thanked her, and soon drove off.
Eve hurried into her house, finishing the rest of latte, and changing. Her phone rang, and she picked up to see it was a reminder. It was work out time. Eve groaned, but didn't waste a moment to change. Grabbing her bag of work out clothes and water, she hurried out the house, hastily locking the door. She jogged across the street, and passed four blocks. She took a left turn, and stopped in front a small building. She jogged up the stairs, and paused for moment's breath. The receptionist, a hot hunk of a guy, peered over at her.
"Rough morning, Eve?" He asked, raising a blonde eyebrow.
Eve panted and vigorously shook her head.
"No, Hank--in fact, phew, it was a great morning!" She exclaimed.
Hank smiled at her, clearly unconvinced, and got back to his work. Eve walked over to women's side of the gym. It was a small gym, and only four people could use it at a time. So the members were given a time period when they could come. If they missed, there was nothing the gym management could do about it. Eve closed the door, and began to warm up. Habitually, she began singing Katy Perry's Roar. It was a habit noone in her family, even herself, couldn't understand. She ran on the treadmill for thirty minutes, and then lifted weights for another thirty. Her phone reminder rang again, telling her that her time was up.
She got up and walked over to her bag and unzipped it. Grabbing her towel from inside, she wiped her sweaty hands and legs. Eve kept singing all the while. She didn't have a worry in the world. Or at least, she felt like it. Who needed a guy? She thought. She was better off without them. After changing into her hoodie and tracks, she walked out of the room, only to be blocked. She looked up at the stranger, and her knees turned to jelly.
A handsome face stared at her, with a grin on his face. Grey eyes twinkling mischievously, and brown tousled hair that made Eve want to mess it a little more. He had his strong, muscled arms folded across his chest. Now the problem wasn't the fact that he was extremely hot, and that Eve had been caught by surprise. The problem was, he was her first crush from high school.
"Evelyn Cain." He started.
Eve gulped audibly. He chuckled.
"James Arnold. Wh-what a s-surprise!" Eve stammered.
She mentally cursed herself. It amused James even more.
"I knew it was you," he said, grinning harder.
"Excuse me?" Eve asked, confused.
"Oh, you know, I came here for my shift and heard an off note voice singing Katy Perry's Roar in the most annoying way possible. I knew it was you instantly," he explained.
Eve blushed red, remembering the times when she did the same in gym class. James laughed, much to Eve's annoyance. Then, Eve had a doubt.
"How do you know that? Only my friends knew," she asked.
James leaned in and whispered,
"Let's just say, I have had a special interest in you for a long time, sweetheart." He said.
He turned to go to his side of the gym, leaving Eve gaping behind him. He abruptly stopped and turned,
"Oh, and I'll pick you up at eight o'clock sharp, tonight. Be ready, sweetheart." He winked and walked away, leaving Eve's jaw hanging open.
A little humorous romance is good! Been writing it for a long time, but still not satisfied. What are your opinions? Let moi know! ❤❄
