Chapter 25
"Good night, mademoiselle and good night, Rosie.", Eric said as he made his way out the door. "Good night, Eric.", I said without realizing what I had just done. Eric froze. I froze. What have I done? Christine gasped and so did I. "Eric?", she asked.
"Eric, is that you?", she asked again. "How did you find me? I thought you were dead." Eric turned around and looked at mother.
"Well, now you know. I'm not dead. It's good to see that you still haven't forgotten about me. After everything I did for you. You repaid me like that. I for gave you. I will always forgive you. Even when you wrong me. Do you remember that night, Christine? Do you?", he ranted.
Mother stared at him, her full of tears. "Yes.", she said softly. "Yes. I remember and it was the best night of my life. I have forgiven you. I-I love you."
I felt slightly confused. What happened on this specific night? "What night? What happened?", I asked. They both seemed to ignore me. Mother moved away from me and stepped closer to Eric until she was right in front of him.
"We should tell her.", Eric whispered to mother. "It's not right to keep this a secret." "Tell me what? What is going on here?", I asked. I knew something was going on here. Mother never kept secrets and Eric could never have them.
And now it was really suspicious how they both had a secret, the same secret to be exact, and that it was about me no doubt.
"Tell me, I'm a big girl. I can handle it.", I said to them, breaking their stares. Eric and Christine both took some deep breaths. This night had to have been serious if they have to keep from me. "Alright, Rosie. One night, about 17 years ago, your mother and I had an unexpected meeting.", Eric said.
I was slightly confused. What did he mean by an "an unexpected meeting"? "What do you mean by that?", I asked, but I never got an answer. Eric just held up his hand and continued, "Your mother came to see me on the night before her wedding night and, well...", he stopped.
"Well, what? What happened that was so bad?", I asked more annoyed. They said they were going to tell em what happened and they're not telling me.
Do they expect me to guess what happened?
"Rosie", mother said, "That night, Eric and I-", Christine said, but I cut her off. I instantly understood what they were saying. I couldn't believe it. I just couldn't. "Oh my lord. Don't tell me what I think you are telling is true. Please don't tell em you cheated on father."
"Rosie, Raoul is not your father. I am.", Eric said. I was shocked. I couldn't believe it. I didn't want to believe it. I frowned. This couldn't be true. "No. No. No. No." I didn't know what else to say. I couldn't say anything else. "No, no this is not true. This is some kind of sick joke.", I said angrily. I looked at Eric, fury in my eyes. "If I am your daughter, than why did you try to kidnap me?", I asked angrily.
Eric didn't answer for a while. I just stared at him. I wanted to know. I needed to know. As I stared at him, tears threatened to spill from my eyes. They lied to me. Mother and, I guess, father lied to me. Mother, especially, kept this from me for 9 years.
What did they think that I wouldn't find out? That I wouldn't care? Well I did. "Did you think that I wouldn't find out? Did you think that I wouldn't care? Or did you think I was too stupid to notice and not give a damn?! Answer me!", I screamed as the tears started falling. I fell apart right there on the foyer floor.
I felt Eric's arms try to embrace me and it was then that I snapped out of my daze and pushed him off me. "Get off me! Get away from me!" I had enough of this. I couldn't do this anymore. I ran away. I ran out the door. I ran past the porch. I ran into the carriage that was still parked outside in the road. "Where to, mademoiselle?", the driver asked.
"Take me to the harbor, please.", I told him. He nodded his head and snapped the reigns and the horses began to move and as I pulled away from my home, I saw my mother crying in the doorway, and Eric running to try and catch up, but was too slow. As soon as the house was out of eye shot, I leaned my head against the leather seat and closed my eyes to help keep the tears in, but it didn't work. I started to sob.
"Family troubles, eh?", the driver asked. "You could say that.", I responded. I didn't really want to talk about it. "Do you want to talk about it? We have a long way to go and I'm a good listener." "I don't really want to talk about it." "You know, mademoiselle, talking about it might make you feel better." I thought about it for a minute, and finally told him everything.
After I told him everything, we reached the harbor. "Well mademoiselle, it seems we're here. Here, I want you to have this. It's the crest of my family. I when you reach America, I want you to find my son, his name is Daniel. He lives in New York. If you find him, you tell him that I sent you to him and show him the ring, and he will take care of you. Farewell, mademoiselle.", he said as we reached the docks.
"Thank you, monsieur. How much do I owe you?", I asked as I pulled out some money, but he put his hand on mine to stop me from taking money out. "Nothing. It's on the house.", he said. I thanked him and made my way to the ticket booth and bought a ticket for America.
America, here I come.
