Chapter 14

The mysterious figure cursed quietly to himself and I felt myself being taken out of his arms and into Raoul's.

I then felt myself being laid on a comfy, soft surface and I knew it was my bed. I groggily opened my eyes and looked into Christine's soft caramel brown eyes.

She gave me a calming and sympathetic smile. I could just barely see the tears in her eyes before she wiped them away.

I could feel myself begin to slip away and before I blacked out, I returned Christine's smile and then it went dark, and in the background I could hear the faint sound of fighting and cursing.

When I woke up it was probably well past midnight. I slowly rose from my bed but winced slightly in pain from my headache that I just noticed I had.

I walked to my door, but when I walked past my bathroom, I froze. The door was torn off its hinge at the top and the mirror was cracked.

I walked in to see more of the damage and what I found gave me a horrified sight. There was blood all over the floor and I even found a couple of teeth.

I walked further into the room and saw a mysterious all black, full body length cape. I was scared.

That cape looked very familiar. It looked like the black cape that father would wear whenever he left the lair.

Then everything started to click. I suddenly remembered everything and it hit like a big truck.

Someone tried to kidnap me last night and that person was someone I knew. Someone that raised me. Someone that I left behind.

Someone that I thought loved me. Realization hit me in large waves and found myself sink to the floor trying to control my breathing while tears streamed down my face.

Father tried to kidnap me and Raoul stopped him. I instantly became overwhelmed with fear and worry.

The fear that father would return and attempt to kidnap me again, but this time succeed and worry because I didn't know what happened to Raoul. I scrambled out of my bathroom and into the dark hallway.

I made my way carefully down the grand staircase. I swayed a little bit, but regained my balance and continued on toward the kitchen where I heard soft sobbing and low whispers.

I continued on toward the kitchen and when I entered I had four pairs of eyes on me. Christine and Raoul were both sitting around the table.

Christine's eyes were red and puffy with bags under them which indicated that she ddn't get much sleep.

Raoul's once lght sky blue eyes were filled with worry, concern, anger, and happiness, and like Christine's, Raoul had bags under his eyes too. Neither one of them had gotten sleep. No doubt because of me.

Nobody moved. Everyone was silent. The only sound was the sound of our uneven breathing.

Then slowly Christine slowly got up and walked over to me standing in the doorway.

When she reached me, more tears filled her eyes and she said to me in a low voice, but I still managed to hear her, "I thought I lost you."

I smiled and she gladly returned it. I was happy. For the first time in a while, I was genuinely happy.

I ran forward into Christine's arms, catching her completely off guard, but she still returned my hug. I could feel the tears falling onto my hair as my own tears feel onto hers.

"I love you mom," I said into the crook of her neck. Her tears started to fall more and I could feel her body shake as she sobbed.

"I love you too Rosie. I'm so sorry for calling you a street rat," Christine said as she continued to sob uncontrollably. I forgave her and looked over her shoulder, looking over at Raoul's light blue eyes filled with tears of his own.

When Christine finally let go, I ran straight into Raoul's awaiting arms. I wrapped my arms tightly around his neck and whispered, "I love you, dad. Thank you for never giving up on me."

Raoul pulled me away slightly, only enough so he could look me into my eyes. He didn't say a word. None of us did. He just smiled at my words and more tears fell from all of our eyes. I was so grateful for my family.
