Chapter 6 - what is 2+2 really?

“Nothing,” Adrian said smiling a weak smile.

“Adrian, don’t lie to me,” I said.

“I’m not,” he said looking down. I was going to get up and smack him but I felt too lazy and tired.

“Anyways, I wanted to let you know that you will feel very tired for at least 24 hours and if you try to do any fighting or exercise you will be hurt, and I will be mad. Trust me sweetie, don’t get me mad. Anyways,  after 24 hours you will be able to move better but you won’t be completely yourself until a week later,” Dr. Marge said.

“It’s going to be a whole week of this? That sucks!” I complained. Dr. Marge just shrugged/

“Wait, did you tell my parents?” I asked.

“No, I left that to you,” she said then walked out.

“Yes!” I said happily. I didn’t want them to know until after the meeting. I didn’t want to bum their mood.

“I’m going to go the bathroom,” I informed Adrian but as I stood up, everything got all dizzy.

“Whoa.” Adrian caught me before I fell.

“I’m fine, thanks,” I said and walked over to the bathroom. After, as I was washing my hands I decided to brush my hair. However, as I was what I saw in the mirror made me scream. Was it a demon? No, it was worse. It didn’t have grey glowing eyes. It was my own reflection. Adrian was banging on the door telling me to open it, but I ignored him. I looked gross. My skin looked so pale, wan, and skinny. My eyes had no life in them, and my hair was looking more like a troll’s hair than a human. I walked out with my shoulders slumping.

“What happened?” Adrian asked, worried.

“I look hideous!” I shrieked then collapsed on my bed.

“Oh come on,” Adrian said walking over and then patting my back.

“It’s not that bad,” he said obviously trying to make me feel better.

“Liar,” I grumbled against the bed.

“No, I still find you very attractive,” he said and picked my head up giving me a gentle kiss.

“Thank you, I needed that,” I said sitting up.

“Anytime,” he replied grinning.

“Wait! What time is it?” I asked searching for a clock in the room with my eyes.

“Ten, you’ve only been out for a couple hours,” Adrian said checking his phone.

“I have to pick up my brother!” I said standing up fast, too fast it hurt.

“Hey, watch it! One of us will pick him up or we’ll tell your parents to get someone else to do so,” Adrian said.

“Um, that won’t work. My parents can’t know about this until later and if one of you goes my brother will know something’s up and snitch on my parents, as usual,” I said sighing. My brother was just too annoying. Most times I hated him, but what can you do, you can’t pick your family and sometimes he came in handy.

“Then, I’m going with you to pick him up from his friend’s house,” he said. Adrian and Eddie in the same house? Not going to happen.

“Its fine, I’ll go with Elysia or Danni. Hey, even Sam is here! See I have options,” I said trying to convince him. Adrian shook his head.

“I want to take you.  I already feel bad about what happened to you. I’m going to take you,” he said in a tone that left no arguments.

“Dude, it wasn’t your fault that a demon attacked me. It happens all the time! It was just my stupidity that I forgot my stake,” I said then walked into my closet to change. I just wore simple Capri jeans with a baggy shirt. This would be the most comfortable. I walked over to the bathroom. I have to fix how I look. After a long torturous time of brushing and straightening my hair it looked almost perfect. I wore makeup and contacts so people couldn’t tell the sickly color of my skin and eyes. There, it’s like there’s nothing wrong. Well, only if you look real close. I walked out.

“Beautiful,” Adrian muttered. I chuckled and put my phone and stake in my pockets.

“Thanks,” I said and walked into the living room. Immediately I was crushed into a hug. I cried out in pain.

“Oh my god, we’re sorry!”

I looked and saw Sam, Elysia, and Danni looking at me with relieved and worried faces. I saw Sam glance at my feet and sigh in relief.

“The doctor told us that something with your appearance was going to be off, and I thought you were like missing a foot or something,” Sam said and I laughed. Danni walked towards me.

“What is 2+2?”

“5,” I replied sarcastically.

“Ok, good, you’re yourself,” Danni said relaxing.

“But you do know its 4 right?” she asked.

“Oh my god, yes, I was just kidding!” I said.

“Wait, wait, wait! So, 2+2 is not 5?!” Elysia asked counting 2+2 with her fingers.

“But, that’s not fair! The thumb feels left out! What kind of sick twisted world do we live in?!” she exclaimed and ran over to the sleeping Mikey on the couch and nudged him to wake up.

“What,” he groaned sleepily.

“2+2=4 not 5!” she said as if it was a new discovery.

“Ugh, stop talking Math. I just woke up,” Mikey replied rubbing his eyes.  Max rolled his eyes and walked over to us.

“You look much better,” he observed.

“Thanks,” I said. Well this is kind of awkward. I hugged him softly.

“Aw, you guys are not fighting, yes!” Danni said clearly happy.

“Thanks for you know, saving me,” I said smiling at him.

“Speaking of which, like I told you, you totally owe my ass,” he said smirking.

“If I was feeling better I would so smack you,” I said glaring at him in a joking way.

All of a sudden I felt someone pick me up.

“Whoa, what’s going on?” I said looking at Adrian who was carrying me.

“I can tell you get tired even standing, so now you don’t have to,” Adrian replied.

“Adrian, put me down! There’s no need for this,” I said. He shook his head stubbornly. I sighed.

“Mikey, I’m tired too! Why don’t you pick me up?” Elysia whined.

“Uh, I don’t think I can carry you,” he said. Elysia smacked him.

“Are you calling me fat?!?! You bastard…”

“Oh, I didn’t mean that. I’m just tired, that’s why,” Mikey said kissing Elysia.

“Ok, Adrian let’s go!” I said and he raced out the door carrying me while I was laughing at how fast he wanted to get out just so we wouldn’t see a scene. He set me in the passenger’s seat and sat in the driver’s seat himself.

“So, which one of your little bro’s friends are we picking him up from,” Adrian said.

“Uh, um, Alex’s house,” I said looking out the window.

“Oh ok,” he said pulling out of the driveway.

1-2-3

“As in Eddie’s little brother?!” he yelled and we almost crashed into another car.

“Relax! Yes, so you know where we are going,” I said not meeting his eyes. He didn’t say anything.

We parked the car, we’re here. We got up and I ringed the doorbell. Here we go.
