Chapter 16- Everybody hates Mondays

I opened my eyes and smiled at the sleeping Adrian next to me. I slowly got up and went to the bathroom, starting the day off  in a good way. As I was washing my hands I remembered what day it was. My heart kind of clenched at the thought. It’s Monday, also known as “testing day”. Whoop-dee-fucking-doo. The testing tires me out too much. I had barely gotten dressed in a shirt and some jeans when the doorbell rang.

“I’ll get it!” I yelled and sprinted towards the door. I opened the door and saw Professor Udinov, Dr. Marge, and Dr. Hems. Dr. Marge was the female healer in our group, and Dr. Hems was the male one. Professor Udinov was a Russian scientist and also a demon hunter. He was here to help in the testing. I personally disliked the guy. He was just a creeper, but he means well, so I can’t hate him.

“Hello Amy,” Dr Marge said walking in. The others followed suit.

“We brought groceries today, and good news you guys will be getting a housekeeper soon!” Dr. Hems said brightly. Dr Hems was a good guy. I liked him.

“Ok, enough with the chitter-chatter, yes? Yes, let’s get started,” Professor said. I nodded not wanting to go through this. By now, everyone was here. I was to go first. I entered the soundproof room in which all the experiments were conducted, and Dr. Marge and Professor Udinov also followed suit. Dr. Hems was waiting in the living room with my friends. They closed the door. This room was always too dim for my liking. I couldn’t shake off the feeling of feeling trapped.

“Let’s get started, yes?” the professor said. I sat on the chair and we started with simple psychic tests. “Warm-up” as they called it. It was just me guessing numbers and trying to move coins. My ability for guessing numbers was 90%, but for the coins it was 60%. We finally finished with the “warm-ups” and they put the helmet on my head. My heart started racing. I hated this part. The helmet was tight and annoying. The other end of the wires that were connected to the helmet connected to a machine. It looked like a heart monitor, but it showed brain waves. The lines were now going fast and more frequent, because I was awake and alert. They put blindfolds on me.

“Now, Amy, you know how this goes. You need to calm down and focus. Think about your special memory, and feel as if you’re dozing off into peaceful sleep. Now, I’m going to put the earplugs on you,” Dr. Marge reminded. The more senses they blocked off, the easier it would be to connect with my “sixth sense”. I always tried, but I never succeeded. It was always hard for me to calm down. I imagined my brain waves slowing down and becoming less frequent. I went to my special memory. It wasn’t an actual memory, but more of a “happy place”. The air was neither hot nor cold. It was a blue sky with a nice cold breeze. I was lying on the grass on a blanket with Adrian. There was absolutely nothing to worry about in this world. The waterfall was beautiful, and the food we had was delicious. The clouds were white and fluffy. Well, except for that grey one. What was that doing there? The grey cloud grew bigger and bigger. Now it started raining. Wait, this is my imagination, I should be able to control this. However, I could not. I felt trapped. The rain turned into a storm, and I was freezing. I snuggled closer to Adrian.

“You cold sweetheart?” he said, but it wasn’t his voice. I jumped away from him.

“Lucifer, you filthy scum, you couldn’t leave me here alone in peace?!” I yelled at him.

“Don’t blame me, love, I was summoned here,” he said simply.

“Summoned? What do you mean?”

“You wanted me to come here, and I usually wouldn’t listen, but your force was pretty strong. Aw, look at you all improving in your sixth sense,” he said looking bored.

“I did not ask for you to be here,” I said stubbornly.

“Argh!” I yelled and dropped to my knees.

“Don’t look at me, I’m not doing anything,” Lucifer said. There was a throbbing pain in my right temple. It was getting worse. The scene in front of me changed again. I couldn’t see anything, but I could hear.

“We shall destroy their safe house. Teach them their silly games and spells can’t keep us out.” an all too familiar British voice said.

“First attack in the war, my lord,” a voice crackled and started laughing.

The pain was unbearable now. I started screaming. Now, even the voices were gone and all that’s left was darkness.

*******

I opened my eyes to find myself in the living room. I was still hearing screaming. There was pain.

“Hey there Amy, I got you some tea,” Danni said handing me a cup of tea, smiling. Mikey was shaking- probably due to the fact that they didn’t let him smoke or drink before testing. Well, he should’ve gone by now. Elysia was staring out of the window. She was quiet- that was weird. Sam had an arm around Elysia. Alan and Max were pacing. The atmosphere was tense, and I was confused. Not to mention the annoying screaming in my head. Adrian wasn’t around; I guess it was his turn for testing. Dr. Madge was sitting down on a couch awkwardly.

“Thanks,” I choked out. Screaming, screaming. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore.

“Don’t you guys hear that?!” I yelled. Everyone turned to look at me.

“What’s wrong?” Danni asked softly.

It can’t end like this, no!

Wait, that’s not my voice; its Adrian’s. Before anyone could react, I flung myself towards the door to the testing room. Max was the quickest to react. He grabbed me by my shoulders and pinned me to the ground.

“Don’t do anything foolish. They’re testing,” he muttered, but his eyes were apologetic. I took that as a warning to calm down. Something else was going on here. He must have seen my eyes calm down, for he helped me up. I stood there staring at him.

“Adrian is in pain,” I said willing them to understand.

“How do you know?” Dr. Madge asked. My hands were shaking by now.

“I just do! I can’t explain it. I heard him in my head,” I said. Realizing how that sounded I fell down on my knees.

“I’m crazy,” I whispered.

“This is interesting. You and Adrian have a psychic bond, that’s so rare!” Dr. Madge said excitedly. Sam glared at her.

The door opened and Dr. Hems came out helping a stumbling Adrian. Professor Udinov followed behind. They gently placed him on the couch. He looked as if he were about to pass out, I sat next to him holding his head up.

“Good session, all of you,” Professor said and walked out with Dr. Madge. Dr. Hems stared at us for a while with a grim expression. His expression changed and he forced out a smile.

“Don’t forget to drink some juice so your blood sugar can go back up!” he said with false enthuasim and ran out. No one talked until we heard the car drive away. Even after that, we all waited for another five minutes.

“I need a beer,” Adrian mumbled. I chuckled, but that turned into a sob.

“I’ll get you some juice, stay put,” I mumbled. I kissed him and went to go get juice boxes for everyone. I came back and handed everyone a juice box.

Mikey walked out to the backyard and started smoking. Sam watched TV. I just sat by Adrian, making sure he was alright. He seemed better after the juice.

“Guys, we need a plan,” Max said suddenly.

“What?”

Max looked around.

“We need a plan to feel better of course! Let’s go to the park or something,” he said with a completely different tone. He was smiling, but his eyes were saying something else.

“I’m too lazy to go to the park,” Elysia groaned. Sam looked at me, and I understood. Sam and I have known Max the longest, and I think that’s how we knew something was not right.

“I agree! Come on; let’s go to the park, please? We can walk. It’ll be nice,” I said smiling.

“Yup, I’m all for fresh air,” Sam said nodding.

“Well… if you guys really want to?” Elysia said unsure.

*********

“Ok, what’s up with this secret meeting?” I asked as we all settled on a picnic table.

“I was worried that the house had wiretaps and video cameras. Anyways, I’m pretty sure the people who are testing us are hiding something from us, and they’re treating us like shit if you haven’t noticed,” Max said. Everyone was absorbing Max’s theory.

“Wait, wait, how do you know they’re hiding something?” I asked.

“It’s like this feeling I get. That’s my “power”. I can figure out people’s emotions. I would rather fly, or something, but that’s what I can do. Can all of you tell me what happened during your session?”

“Your sessions are top secret!” Danni said in a Russian accent slamming the table. We all laughed. I explained to them what happened during my session.

“I heard you screaming, and I heard the bastard Lucifer while you were in there. I tried to open the door, but Dr. Hems stopped me,” Adrian said. Wow, I didn’t know that.

“Its official you guys have a psychic bond,” Danni said in a matter of fact tone.

“Awesome!” Adrian said. I rolled my eyes. Sam, Danni, Adrian, and Mikey explained their sessions. It seemed as if they all found out their power, and they all experienced a throbbing in their temple just like I did. Mikey could control fire which seemed awesome, but when I asked for him to show me, his hands started shaking and he ignored me. Sam had telekinesis, and showed us this by moving my phone out of my pocket. Way better than my 60 % accurate coin sliding. Elysia seemed to be spacing out.

“How was your session?” Max asked her softly.

“I can control water,” she said simply. We all froze.

“Oh Elysia,” Alan said with an arm around Elysia, but he also looked pained. I was simply angry. Why were these powers coming to us? Also why did Elysia have to have a “water ability” when she had a phobia of water? None of this was fair. Lucifer’s words came back to me.

I bet there are a billion questions in your head right now, and I could answer them.

I do want answers. What am I thinking? I can’t trust Lucifer. I need another way to find these answers. The demon hunters are out of the question- Max is saying they’re lying to us. Suddenly I felt so lost and alone.

“Guys, Max is right, we do need a plan,” I said already brainstorming when there was an explosion right behind us.
