43. Of Hotels & Fans
The students from Francoise Dupont High School had been invited to the Grand Paris Luxury Hotel to have a 'work experience'.
Basically, they would be doing what the employees of the hotel did all day. Arianne woke up ready to face the world, 'til she discovered that Adrien would be her partner.
Don't misinterpret it, it wasn't that Arianne hated to be alongside Adrien, but she had been planning to talk to him with all the confidence in the world about why she reacted the way she did when he kissed her, but now she didn't know if she could.
Luckily, it was just them two. Chloe was originally in the job, too, but the job only had a maximum of two people, so her father had assigned her to the cooking part, which, needless to say, she wasn't very happy about.
So, the job assignments were the following:
Adrien and Arianne were receptionists. Kim was the doorman. Alex, Ivan and Sabrina were the cleaning people. Nino, Juleka, Max, Rose and Chloe were chefs, and Thiago was the butler. The only people who hadn't been assigned a job yet were Marinette and Alya.
While the mayor searched for their names on the list, Arianne and Adrien stood behind the counter, not saying a word to one another. It had been like that for quite some minutes, since Adrien didn't know if Arianne was upset with him, and Arianne had no idea how to tell him what was going on.
"Alya" the mayor spoke up, finally finding their names on the list "You're going to be sorting trash at the main dumpster" Alya gasped, and Marinette and Arianne opened their eyes wide upon hearing that.
"I bet I know who helped make the job arrangements" Arianne spoke up, folding her arms angrily.
"Chloe?" Adrien guessed, speaking up for the first time since they were assigned their positions.
"Obviously" replied Arianne, and then quickly realised that her tone sounded rude "I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say it like that"
"It's fine" replied Adrien, shrugging it off with a smile. Arianne had really missed his bright smile, and it made her heart flutter, as always.
"And Marinette..." the mayor spoke once again, just as the sliding doors were opened, and Jagged Stone walked in, with his crocodile, his manager, and poor Kim pushing the trolley with his luggage behind.
"Hey! That's...." Marinette spoke up.
"Hey, Jagged!" Arianne greeted the rockstar. Jagged Stone turned to look at her, and smiled. He knew her, since she had been the warm-up artist in several of his concerts. That's part of the reason why she was so famous.
"Arianne!" greeted the rockstar, as Adrien, Alya and Marinette opened their eyes wide upon hearing that a famous rockstar knew their friend "How have you been?"
"Pretty well!" replied the violinist "Can't complain! Are you here to check in to the hotel?"
"Well, of course! I hope it will be better than the previous one..."
"Excuse me!" the mayor spoke up firmly, and approached the man "This is a luxury hotel, not a zoo!" he gestured to the crocodile to illustrate his point.
"Uh... Mayor Burgoise?" Adrien spoke up, raising his hand and calling the mayor's attention "This is Jagged Stone. He's a very famous rockstar"
"And he's rich" added Arianne, and the mayor's face lit up like a Christmas tree.
"Mr. Stone!" exclaimed the mayor, with his arms opened wide as he approached him "Welcome to the Grand Paris Hotel!" he bowed exaggeratedly at him "I am mayor Burgoise, and owner of this hotel, the most luxurious of Paris! How are you, sir?"
"How do you think?" questioned Jagged Stone rudely, as he folded his arms "I didn't just come here to admire your lobby!" Arianne chuckled silently when she heard that. She loved Jagged's comments.
"Jagged would like to check in to your most luxurious suite" explained the manager with a smile.
"And Fang better get a real bathtub. Not a tiny wormhole like the one in that hotel across the street" added the rockstar.
"We have everything you need Mrs. Fang!" said the mayor, thinking Fang was the manager, which made Arianne giggle.
"Plot twist" said Arianne to Adrien besides her in a low voice "Fang is actually the crocodile" Adrien arched his eyebrows upon hearing that, and couldn't help but chuckle.
Slowly, things were returning to normal between him and Aria.
"Fang is my crocodile" stated Jagged Stone, gesturing to the animal at his feet, and mayor Burgoise gasped a bit, before getting back his usual tone.
"Mr. Stone! We have everything you require for your ...uh..." he gave Fang a quick scared look before continuing speaking "Fang. Would he enjoy a bubble bath?"
"Crocodiles don't like bubble baths!" argued Jagged Stone "They dry their scales out!"
After kicking out a stalker fan, everything calmed down and Jagged Stone finally got his room.
"Mr. Burgoise!" Mrs. Bustier called the mayor "You haven't told Marinette what job she'll be doing!" the mayor took out the list from his pocket, and spotted Marinette's name.
"Ah, yes!" he exclaimed "Gopher! I got a job for you already!" Arianne frowned upon hearing that title.
"What is a gopher?" she questioned.
"Dunno" Adrien replied, shrugging.
"I hope it's not as bad as Alya's" commented the girl, as Marinette, the mayor and the teacher got into the elevator and went off.
Some minutes later, a strange guy with pink hair and dressed in black and blue got into the hotel. He didn't stop at the counter, he just kept going. Arianne looked at Adrien with a frown, and they both were wondering the same thing: who was this guy?
"Uh...excuse me sir!" Arianne yelled, scurrying from behind the counter "I don't think I've seen you before! Are you here to check in?" she had to do a good job in order to get a good mark and pass the class.
"Indeed I am" replied the guy, turning around. His voice was soothing, but in a very creepy way.
"Okay then!" Arianne nodded with a smile "Can you tell me your name?"
"I'm Pixelator"
"Very well" Arianne nodded once more "Adrien will write your name on the book so we know that you are here" she turned to look at Adrien quizzically, as if asking him what to do with the guy who obviously wasn't supposed to be there.
But he just shrugged.
"I am your biggest fan" the guy spoke up once more, and Arianne furrowed her eyebrows with even more confusion.
"You...know me?" she questioned cautiously. It all sounded a bit weird to her. It's true that she was quite known as a violinist, and people stopped her every once in a while on the streets to ask for her autograph, but this guy gave her the chills.
Adrien frowned suspiciously upon hearing this man. He looked dangerous, and Adrien was ready to intervene if he saw that this guy was going to hurt Arianne.
"Oh, yes" the man nodded "Can I get a picture?" Arianne frowned. She didn't like this.
"I'm sorry, I don't feel like it today" she scurried backwards, as Pixelator placed a finger on his lens.
That was it.
"Look out, Aria!" yelled Adrien, and climbed onto the desk before jumping off to the other side and rushing towards his friend, ready to push her away.
But when he arrived, it was too late. Both of them were swallowed in a cloud of blue pixels.
Arianne hit something hard, and opened her eyes softly, since she had closed them as a reflex.
She froze.
Adrien was on top of her, his face extremely close to hers.
"I...uh..." she tried to say something, but her words were overlapped by her racing heartbeat.
They stayed like that, looking into each other's eyes for a couple of minutes, 'till one of them finally managed to let out some coherent words.
"I-I'm sorry" stuttered Adrien with his cheeks red as a cherry, as he got off Arianne and stood up. He stuck his hand out for her to take and help her up, and she did.
"Where are we?" asked Arianne looking around, as she tried to calm her pounding heart. All they could see was white, nothing else.
"I'm not sure" replied Adrien frowning, as he too tried to lower his heartbeat "We've been like...digitized or something"
"I'm guessing that's a bad thing"
"Probably" agreed Adrien "Let's try to find a way out" he added, as he started to walk around, with Arianne following behind.
"Do you think there's a way out?" questioned Arianne, not very convinced as she frowned.
"It doesn't hurt to try" replied Adrien with a small smile, making Arianne smile, too.
After some minutes of aimlessly wandering around, they didn't find anything.
"It goes on forever" Arianne spoke up, with her arms folded "There's no windows, no doors...it's like we're trapped here"
"I think we actually are trapped here" replied Adrien, and Arianne had to agree.
"It seems like the most logical explanation" she nodded, and placed a finger on her lips in a thinking manner "Alright, if that was an akumatized person..." Adrien frowned at her upon hearing that she knew the word 'akumatized' "From what I've heard they look like" she hurriedly added, so he wouldn't suspect anything "Then the masked quartet will be able to defeat him and get us out of here"
"Yeah, but how long will that take?" asked Adrien logically. They couldn't stay trapped there forever.
"I don't know" replied Arianne softly "We'll have to wait. There's no way out, anyway" she illustrated her point by sitting down on the floor criss-cross. Adrien blinked, before sitting down next to her.
They stayed in silence for a couple of minutes, 'till Adrien finally spoke up, making Arianne look at him curiously
"Hey, I know this is the worst timing, but...maybe we could talk about what happened between us?" they were trapped 'till somebody got them out of there, and there wasn't anything else to do.
Arianne sighed. It was now or never.
"Yeah" she agreed with a nod "Let's talk"
