22. Of Arguments & Candidates
Adrien stared at Arianne as she played the violin.
They were currently in Adrien's room, just hanging out, because they hadn't been able to do that ever since Thiago got into town, for Arianne spent most of her time with him. Thiago was currently hanging out with Nino, since they had become close, too.
"You never cease to amaze me" admitted Adrien, looking at Arianne with a smile when she finished playing the song. She blushed a little bit, much to her annoyance. She didn't like blushing in front of other people, it made her feel vulnerable.
"Thanks" replied Arianne with a huge smile, sitting next to him on the couch, facing the window "But it's no big deal"
"I really wish you would stop doing that" said Adrien when he heard her words, making her frown confused.
"Do what?"
"Being so modest!" he replied "Don't get me wrong, your selflessness is one of the many qualities I admire about you, but you should accept a compliment when it's given to you"
"I said 'thank you'" she replied jokingly, making Adrien roll his eyes.
"You know that's not what I'm talking about" he said, giving her a quick glance. Her chestnut hair was shining underneath the sunlight pouring down from the window.
That's when he noticed that she wasn't wearing her usual beige beret, instead, her hair was tied up in a lace crown braid , which enhanced her features, especially her amber eyes, which, Adrien had never noticed, had a hint of green.
He wondered why he was only noticing this now, when he had known her for so long.
"Do I have something on my face?" she asked amused upon seeing him staring at her, and he quickly looked away in embarrassment.
"N-no" he stuttered "It's just..." he looked at her once more "You look very nice today"
Arianne felt hot all of a sudden, and she did her best to control her heartbeat. What was it with Adrien and his compliments today?
"T-thanks" she stuttered, just as he did, and both stayed silent for quite some minutes, until she noticed a CD on the table. She frowned as she approached it "Hey, what's this?" she looked at Adrien, with the CD Thiago had sent on Valentine's Day in her hands.
"Oh, a present" replied the boy, approaching her "Someone sent it to me on Valentine's Day"
"You must have received amazing gifts, right?" she questioned, trying to control her jealousy. She knew that Adrien was a model, and that many girls would obviously be in love with him, but she couldn't help but be bothered by it.
Not that something could ever happen between them.
"Just some letters" replied Adrien, who felt the need of justifying himself with Aria for some reason "The only thing that was really great was the song in that CD"
"Can I listen to it?" she asked. It was no her gift after all, so she couldn't just put it on the computer. Maybe Adrien didn't want her to.
But Adrien didn't mind. He had often thought about telling Arianne about her love for Loup d'Argent, but that could lead to the question 'where do you know her from?', and what would he say then? He couldn't just tell Arianne that he was Chat Noir, as much as he wanted to (and he did want to. He didn't like keeping secrets from her).
"Sure!" replied the boy, as Arianne played the CD in the laptop. When the song started to play, she opened her eyes wide in recognition.
"Hey, that's—" she stopped herself.
How did Adrien get her song? She never showed it to him! (mostly because he was the inspiration, and she felt that she would cry if she ever did show it to him). She was very sensitive when it came to songs she had written thinking about Adrien, most of them were a reflection of her unrequited feelings, which she would never be able to reveal.
"You know who it belongs to?!" questioned Adrien excited. If she told him, it could lead to discovering Loup d'Argent's identity.
"No" she said promptly "I thought I did, but I don't. The chords are a bit different" she turned to look at him as the song kept playing "Who sent you this?"
"I don't know" replied the boy, with a shake of his head "It came with a letter, but it wasn't signed"
Arianne frowned. The only other person who knew that the song existed was...
"Thiago" she mumbled, making Adrien furrow his eyebrows in confusion.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing" replied the girl. She needed to have a conversation with her dear childhood friend.
Just in time, Nathalie came into the room and told Adrien that he had a photoshoot to attend.
"I guess that's my cue" said Arianne, hanging the violin case across her shoulder.
"Sorry" replied Adrien. He felt apologetic, because he was having a good time with Arianne and wanted to spend more time with her, but he had things to do, sadly.
"Don't worry!" replied his friend with a smile. She understood that he was a very busy person "I'll see you tomorrow in class!" she gave him a small wave and went off.
"Sorry" said Thiago, when she told him what she had discovered later that day "But you were very stubborn, and we had to do something!"
"I told you that I didn't want you to raise my hopes up" she reminded, with a stern tone "And then you go and write a letter to Adrien, with one of my songs! And you didn't even ask my permission to use it!"
"Okay, that's true" agreed the boy "But you wouldn't have agreed if we told you why we wanted it"
"Of course I wouldn't!"
"Arianne" started her friend patiently, trying to keep his composure "You were sad from the moment we woke up that day because you couldn't do anything about your feelings for Adrien, but when the chance was given to you, you didn't take it!"
"Of course I didn't!" she yelled, with some tears on her eyes "What was I supposed to do? Steal the guy that my best friend is in love with?!"
"It's not stealing, because you were in love with him first!" replied Thiago, equally angry. Marinette was a very good friend to Thiago, but he couldn't deny the fact that Arianne met him first, and was in love with him first "You've been in love with Adrien since you were thirteen, thirteen. You don't want to tell him anything about it now because of Marinette, but what's your excuse then?" he asked logically, and Arianne didn't find anything to argue against that, because he was right "Marinette didn't know Adrien when you were younger!"
"I was thirteen, Thiago!" she said "I didn't even understand what was going on! And who are you, anyway, to question my decisions?" she was so angry at that point, that she didn't even think what she was saying.
"Keeping all your feelings bottled up inside is not gonna do you any good!" argued Thiago, ignoring her question. He was tired of seeing Arianne sad over her feelings for Adrien "You need to do something about them!"
"You said it, me, not you! So stop getting involved!"
"You know what?" questioned Thiago angrily, raising his hands up in redemption "Fine. I won't, but then don't try to come and talk to me about it, either, 'cause you said it yourself; you don't want me to get involved"
"Oh, I won't! Don't worry!"
"Chloe is running for the class representative position, and Sabrina will be her deputy" announced the teacher to the students the next morning at school.
Thiago and Arianne were still angry at each other, and many people noticed; they weren't sitting together in class like they always did. Arianne was sitting next to Alya, and Thiago was sitting on the usual desk, but alone.
"What happened between the two of you?" asked Alya in a low voice "You are both acting weird"
"Oh, nothing" replied Arianne bitterly "Just that Thiago suddenly feels like taking control of my life for me" her friend frowned upon hearing that.
"What do you mean?" she was about to answer, when Marinette got in hurriedly.
"I-I'm sorry!" she said apologetically. When she saw that Arianne was sitting next to Alya, she frowned confused and sat next to Thiago.
"Uhm..." she looked at Arianne and then at Thiago once more "Is everything okay between the two of you?"
"Ask her" replied Thiago angrily. He didn't feel like talking about it, but neither did Arianne, and Marinette realised this when she looked at Arianne and saw her eyes guarded, so she didn't say anything.
"Chloe is running for class rep again" announced Alya, looking at Marinette "She's been class rep since when? Kindergarten?"
"It's some sort of power thing" replied Arianne, rolling her eyes "She wants to be able to control each and every single one of us"
"Why don't you run as candidate?" questioned Marinette, looking at Alya "You'd be awesome as class representative"
"No can do" replied Alya, shaking her head "My blog is a full-time job. But maybe Aria could, she is always worrying about others" both friends turned to look at the violinist.
"I would if I didn't have my career to worry about" replied the girl, talking about her violin career. It was her job, after all. A very peculiar job, but a job still. Though she wasn't paid to do it, and she didn't want to, either.
And she still had her duties as Loup d'Argent.
"All right!" announced the teacher "I'll give all of you 'till the end of lunch to decide if you wanna be a candidate"
