Chapter 10
A/N Due to starting my other two books that y'all happily wanted published this book will be updated every Monday instead of every day. Thanks!
Dan wakes up and follows the great smells to the kitchen.
"Morning Fawn." He whispers as he slips his arms around her from behind.
"Morning Teddy Bear."
"What's for breakfast since you have already started."
"Eggs and sausage." She answers with a chuckle.
"Sounds good. I see it's still snowing out there." He comments gazing out the window at the white ground.
"Yeah, you know what that means?" She turns around in his arms with a smile.
"I have no idea what that means."
"That means that you and me get to go feed in the sled. We have to take hay too since it is about three foot already." She tells him her smile never wavering.
"You're not serious. You really think it's already three feet?" This being his first winter in the area he had no idea it snowed that much. Let alone that quickly.
"Yeah, when I let Daisy out this morning it was about two and a half already. It fell pretty hard and fast last night." She tells him.
"So does that mean I'm not getting home today?"
"You can ride or take the sled, but we are pretty much vehicle less right now. The roads out here aren't very good in snow." She explains while stirring the eggs.
"Okay. Do we need to check the heifers too?"
"Yeah, we can take a horse when we go over there." She fixes herself a plate before handing him one.
After they get done eating they feed the horses, except for Perk and Glory, Tylee already fed them. When the team is hitched Tylee directs them to the wood shed where she and Dan unload the wood they gathered the evening before. With the sled empty they load sacks of feed on top of hay they pitched from the loft.
"South bound!" Tylee declares taking the reins. Dan chuckles and climbs on the bench beside her with Daisy in the back on the top of the feed. Tylee and Dan holler since they don't have the siren or pickup horn. The cattle are eager to meet the sled. Once all the cattle in that pasture are waiting Tylee guides Perk and Glory while Dan sits on the back of the sled and strings the feed out. When all of the feed is distributed for that pasture Dan climbs back on the bench beside her and they pick the pace up.
"Are we feeding ever body today?" Dan inquires as they clear a small space for the cattle to drink out of at a water trough.
"Not today. If it keeps up we will have to feed them all." She tells him.
"That shortens the day a little."
After feeding all the cattle for the day except the heifers they stop by the house and Tylee saddles Willow Wind. She rides beside the team while Dan puts in some practice. When they get to the heifer pasture they call them up, as they have done with the others. Thirteen of the fifteen trot up to the sled with bulging bellies. After a few minutes the remaining to walk up with small black calves trailing them.
"Tylee, you see how that one calf looks sick?" Dan asks as she takes the reins so he can pour out the feed.
"No, which one?" They get out and Dan points out the calf that was indeed sick.
"The other one doesn't look very good either. I'll rope the calves and we can put them in the sled, the cows will follow easily. I'll keep back the feed we need and then catch up with you after I feed." She tells him her plan.
"Okay." He agrees. Tylee remounts Wind and brings her rope down. She ropes both calves and Dan puts them in the back of the sled. Once he is out the gate and down the road a good ways she pours the feed out and breaks the ice. When the ice is cleared from a small space she rides through the gate locking it behind her. She trots until she is behind the, now cows.
Once at the barn Tylee gets off and opens the gate into a pen. She and Dan each carry a calf inside with the cows following closely behind. Dan stings out feed while Tylee pitches hay to them. When they are fed she gets the medicine out of the barn fridge.
"I'm roping this time!" Dan declares taking her rope off her saddle.
"You are such a goof." She mutters shaking her head with a smile.
Dan ropes one of the calves and flanks him. Tylee gives the calf a shot before Dan releases it. They repeat the process with the remaining calf before unsaddling Wind and unharnessing Perk and Glory. Hand in hand they walk to the house as dusk shows its face.
"Who should I ride when I go to the bunk house?" Dan asks as they sit down with cups of coffee.
"Ummm. I don't know take your pick I guess." Tylee answers, he rolls his eyes with a smile.
"That is a lot of help. Pigeon?"
"Sure you can just put him in the pens there off the house."
"Okay, I will take some hay with me." He tells her and kisses her forehead.
"Okay. I think that we can feed the other half tomorrow and then be okay. The radar shows that the snow should clear off by tomorrow night." She tells him while watching the radar on her phone.
"That's good. I don't know that I want to feed cattle everyday for very long."
"You haven't seen a thing! Two winters ago I fed everyday for a month. The cattle were belly deep in snow."
"My goodness! I can't believe that you did all that by yourself! Did you even sleep?" Dan's voice is laced with shock and amazement.
"Of course I did! I'm not superman. I slept from about ten thirty to four in the morning. That year Perk and Glory earned their keep forever that year."
"I can only imagine! I just thought that I had seen and done a lot of work. How do you even function with the weight of a ranch?"
"It's not that much. I guess I just wing it and the less important things get dropped. Hint why minor water leaks are everywhere." She tells him with a smile.
"Well I'll have to see how many of them I can fix this summer." He comments with half smirk.
"I might get a chance to help you since I'm not the only one to check cattle."
"That would make it much more enjoyable." Mischief drips from his voice.
"Right because you want to soak me." She points her finger at him and raises a eyebrow.
"Darn! You caught me!"
"Of course, Papaw was the worlds worst. You might as well wear your swimming suit when you fixed any kind of water." She tells him with a knowing look.
"Okay, I'm not that bad. I just enjoy getting my help a little wet."
"What if your the help?" Her smirk and twinkle in her eye says it all.
"Well then I guess... I guess I get wet instead."
"Exactly! That is what I was thinking in the first place." She declares the mischief twinkle remaining in her eye.
"Oh crap! If you are anything like you describe your Papaw I am doomed!" He exclaims with mock horror.
"Oh stop! Water never hurt anybody. Although you might melt, you're just so sweet." She kisses his cheek as she walks by to put her cup in the sink.
"Your sweeter." He whispers slipping his arms around her.
"I'm not sure that's possible." She challenges.
"Oh, but it is. By a long shot."
"Not possible."
"I'm not arguing with my sweet girlfriend over who is sweeter." He states and kisses her cheek.
"Good because I was going to win anyway."
"Whatever." He states with a half smile.
"As much as I don't want you to, you should probably get started home." She tells him.
"I guess so." He kisses her cheek before lacing his fingers through hers. They walk to the mud room where they don their hats and slickers. They saddle Pigeon and feed the horses.
"I'll see you in the morning." Dan tells her.
"Okay. You don't have to be up so early in the morning." Tylee looks into his sky eyes.
"Okay." They say their good byes before he mounts and rides off. Tylee walks back to her house with Daisy following at her heels.
Thank you Lord for sending me an amazing man!
