Dracula: the untold and his Fan girl
October 18, 2014
This is not a movie review –I suck at making one. I tend to praise a movie most especially if Johnny Depp was in it even though the movie was awful. Okay so here goes.
I really have a thing for those villains, both in movies and in books. I mean, oh c’mon, they are the ones who actually give directions to a plot. They are the necessary evil. Without the anti-hero, there wouldn’t be a hero. So, yeah. I love a good villain. And I don’t mean a good good villain –I meant a villain who portrays evilness and nastiness so well that I could somehow, a little bit, sympathize and understand them. Personally, I believe that there is always a reason why a person behaves or acts that way. No matter how crazy a person’s actions are, there is always a reason behind it. If we cannot find a sound reason, then we can blame it on schizophrenia –it is still a reason, though not a sound one. Like Penguin from batman. He was born different, neglected by his parents. He grew up not knowing what it was like to be loved so he turned into a man with pure hatred for humanity. Also, often times I watch a movie because of how good an actor portrayed his part as a villain. Like Heath Ledger for instance. He portrayed Joker in Batman so well, I was like “You’re a mean and nasty piece of sh*t Joker!” And I liked Heath Ledger since the Ten Things I Hate About You years (may he rest in peace), so I was surprised at myself for throwing cusses at him and muttering underneath my breath how I wanted him to rot in jail. He was THAT good. There are also times when I watch a movie or a series because I have a thing for the villains. Take the Hunter x Hunter for example. Do you actually think I watched the first season because I was impressed with Gon and his fishing rod? Hell no. I was rooting for Hisoka. And you remember Buffy the vampire slayer? I was half in love with Spike the bad vampire who became Buffy's love interest back then that I went ballistic when they killed him in the series! And why do they kill the vampire we all go gaga over? Why did they have to kill Damon in Vampire Diaries? Why can’t it be the other Salvatore brother?
So anyway, I just finished watching Dracula: the untold and I, as the ever overly dramatic girl, shed buckets of tears when –I will not make any spoiler! Point is: I cried. Before the movie was shown, I shared my enthusiasm and excitement of wanting so badly to see this movie to this boy I’m dating exclusively for the past seven years (Translation: boyfriend) and he had the audacity to shatter my excitement by telling me he won’t be watching the movie! He said that Vladimir Tepes is cruel and a villain through and through and they just portrayed a villain as a hero. And my answer to him was, “But he was just misunderstood!” Okay, okay. I was just making fun when I said that last bit, thinking about how Maleficent was also misunderstood by the rest. Truth be told, Vlad the Impaler, if my history serves me right, was utterly, horrifyingly cruel. But like what I said before, there was a reason why he liked skewering his enemies. With the possible traumatic experiences he had under the Ottoman when he was still a boy, no wonder he grew up to be a sadistic man. But I digress –I want to talk about the movie as it portrays Vlad as a vampire. And I love a good vampire movie.
I find vampires sexy and dangerously attractive. (If I have readers below sixteen, let this be a warning: do not proceed to read for I might influence your way of thinking and it might cause an impact in your future that could devastate you, your family and the entire world.) And writers nowadays tend to over sexualize a vampire character. I’m not complaining though. I love a smug vampire with a dark side who has awesomeness and bad-assery (bad-assery is not really a word but it sounded cool so I used it anyway) embedded in their core. And it wouldn’t hurt if he has awesome abs that is both drool and swoon-worthy. But a vampire has to be vampire. And what do I mean by that? They have to feed on human blood. They need to make a kill because it exhilarates them. They have to hunt because they are the predators of the night. Vegetarian vampires not allowed. And Vladimir was a true blooded vampire. He was once a man who only wanted to protect his son, his family and his kingdom. So he joined the dark side and accepted the Thirst for blood as his gift in the end. It was inevitable for him to drink that blood on his third day to save his son, his heir, his legacy. The movie showed his reasons for embracing the darkness. And though he had some personal issues, his love for his family and people drove him to be the very monster his people feared.
When I said a vampire needs to act like a vampire, Vlad showed it in the movie. When he made a kill, he was ruthless without even a thin thread of hesitation to thwart his enemies. He was even enjoying himself, taunting his enemies by heightening their anxiety and fear, not knowing when Vlad would strike. (Fan girl alert!) And he had no qualms on sinking his fangs on his enemies’ jugular and sucking their blood until they were all dried up.
Okay, okay. The truth was the story line was kinda weak and predictable. But it’s a vampire movie! And I love vampire movies and stories. And yes, I read the twilight saga and watched the movie version even though I find Edward to be the most annoying vampire ever to roam this planet, not to mention Bella as the most irritating, horny teenager who desperately wanted to surrender her V card to her vampire boyfriend but she can’t because Edward was like “No Bella we can’t because I’m too strong and you’re not blah-blah-blah”. It’s because vampires are my favorite fictitious entity. I am not saying I hate Twilight. I read it for crying out loud. It’s just that Edward wasn’t my type of vampire.
What I don’t understand with all the Dracula movies was how come he has to turn in to a bat? I mean, what gives? Why not an owl? It’s also a nocturnal animal. But then again, an owl isn’t really that terrifying, most especially if it is associated with a boy wizard. So a bat it is. But wouldn’t that make him batman? And why was batman called batman? Was he bitten by a bat like how spider-man was bitten by a radio-active spider thus turning him in to spider-man? I know superman was named superman because he was a man with super powers. Talk about irony. I guess I have something to Google about later. (*cough*dork*cough*)
So anyway, I know Luke Evans is openly gay. But that doesn’t mean I cannot have a crush on him, most especially his abs. And he was a good actor. And damn, he made Vlad look hot.
I should stop this. I’m just embarrassing myself.
I told you this is not a movie review.
I sounded like a fan girl! Ugh!
