Chapter 3
The next morning, Saturday, Mel and I slept in late. My mom didn't care, and she knew that we were tired.
When we finally woke up, the smell of chocolate chip pancakes filled our noses. Mel and I trudged downstairs in our pajamas and sat down at the table.
"Good morning girls!" My mom said perkily. How did she manage to be awake this early?
"What time is it?" I grumbled. It was too bright. I needed more sleep.
"It's almost noon. I let you guys sleep in plenty. Now wake up and tell me what you will be doing this magnificent Saturday." My mom twirled onto her seat, diving into her pancakes.
I looked at Mel, she looked at me, and we just shrugged. We had no idea what we were going to do today. It might just end up as a chill day.
"Mel and I are probably just gonna have a day of relaxation to escape all the school stress." I replied to her. We finished our pancakes quickly, thanked my mom, and walked back to my room.
"Let's do makeovers!" Mel giggled excitedly. I groaned. I hated putting on makeup. It ruined the real beauty people had. But Mel loved doing makeup on other people and putting together outfits, so I was usually her model. But we had nothing else to do, so I let her.
I heard my phone buzz on the table so I picked it up. It was a text from Drew. What the heck? How did he even get my number?
"Um, Mel...How did Drew get my number?" I asked her.
"Uhm, w-well I k-kinda gave it to him...?" She squeaked, suddenly afraid of me. Oh she was so dead. First she goes around giving him my address and now my number.
But she looked terrified so I just sighed and looked at the text.
Hi Zoey! Mel gave me your #, if you were wondering. Do you want to go on a picnic for lunch?
I just stared. Seriously? He wanted to go on a picnic?
Um, Mel is actually with me, so...
Mel saw my text and grabbed my phone out of my hands. Seconds later, the phone was to her ear and she was jabbering away.
Before I could react, the phone was back in my hands and Mel was grinning at me wildly.
"You knew he was going to ask me to go to a picnic! That's why you wanted to do makeovers!" I shrieked.
"Well, what's done is done! He's coming to pick you up in 10 minutes, so get your outfit on. And I'm gonna go tell your mom." She grinned.
She bounded out of my room, leaving me with a weird looking outfit on my bed. Did she expect me to wear this? No way. I walked to my closet and pulled out a t-shirt and some jeans. I put those on, and threw on my beat up converse. There. Perfect.
I grabbed a small purse to put my phone, money, keys, and other random stuff into, then slowly trudged down the stairs. When I got there, Mel and my mom were in an intense fan-girling session. I just glared at them and walked to the fridge to get a water bottle. The whole time I could hear them screaming quietly to each other, expressing how happy they were that I was finally "growing up." Mel even shed some pretend tears. It was dramatic.
I sigh, knowing there was no way out of this. I would just go to this picnic, and who knows, maybe it will turn out fun like the carnival I went to with Drew.
The doorbell rings, so I walk to open the door since Mel and my mom are too busy crying with joy. There stands Drew in all his glory, looking handsome as ever. Wait... what did I just say? Shut up, brain. He's Drew, the annoying idiot that you definitely DO NOT like. I snap out of my mental conversation and realize that I've been staring at him too long.
"Daydreaming about something? Or should I say... someone?" Drew asks, raising his eyebrows, pointedly suggesting himself. I just roll my eyes and push past him to get out of the house before Mom did anything weird.
"Bye Mom, bye Mel!" I holler back at them.
Turning back at Drew, I wait for him to unlock the car door. He's still standing there, smirking.
"What?" I ask him, annoyed. I just wanted to go eat, I was starving again.
"I don't get a 'hello'?" He asked, faking being hurt, holding a hand to his heart. I rolled my eyes again, but my lips gave out and smiled slightly. He looked so funny standing there.
"Fine. Hi Drew, how are you doing?" I asked, exaggerating the "hi"
"Why, I am doing just fine. Thank you for asking!" He walks to the car door and opens it for me. I blush slightly, thank him, and climb into the car.
While I wait for Drew to get into his side, I look around his car, which I didn't pay attention to the night of the carnival. It was relatively clean, which was pretty cool. Most guys I knew had cars that looked like trash bins; wrappers strewn everywhere, dirty gym clothes stinking up the whole car. Drew's car was organized, and clean, showing that he took good care of it.
By this time, Drew had already started the car, and was pulling away from my house.
"So, where are we going for this picnic?" I asked.
"I was debating whether or not to tell you, but decided to tell you because if I didn't it would be so cliche." Drew states. I nod lightly, not understanding him completely, but whatever.
"So.... are you gonna tell me?" I prodded.
"Yeah, basically since you liked the fair so much, I'm taking you back to the grounds, which are vacant right now, so it's the perfect place to just eat, relax, and draw, since I know you love drawing." Drew looked at me with a nervous smile on his face.
I grinned. This was gonna be awesome! I could eat and draw! I no longer cared that I was forced into going with Drew, because he was not that bad. He definitely knew me well, and took the time to actually bring me to these places.
"Thanks, Drew! I really appreciate you taking me here because I truly do have a lot of fun!" I reply back with a smile. Maybe underneath the annoying exterior, Drew isn't all that bad.
