Chapter 2
History class was boring, as it was every day. I sat in the back, where the teacher couldn't see me, and I really wanted to sleep. But I didn't want to get caught. So I just started into space, while the teacher droned on and on.
5 minutes left... I thought when I looked at the clock. I had English next, which I liked. When the bell rang, I jumped out of my seat and almost ran out the door.
My locker was near my English classroom, so I took my time getting my stuff before walking into the classroom. And guess what I saw.
Sitting in my usual seat was a guy. A pretty hot guy, too. But I'd never seen him before in this school, so I walked over.
"Excuse me, you're in my seat. Please move somewhere else." I said somewhat kindly.
He glanced at me with a smirk.
"It doesn't seem to have your name on it." He replied smoothly. Ugh, don't tell me he's one of those guys. The ones that get on my nerves.
I rolled my eyes at him.
"Well, I always sit here, so please sit somewhere else." I lightly pushed him off the seat. But apparently, it wasn't light. He fell of the chair with a big thunk. Huh, I didn't know I was that strong. I mean, he was like over 6ft of muscle.
He looked up, astonished that I could push him off the chair. I just winked and sat down in my seat, preparing myself for today's lesson.
I saw him sit at the desk next to me and I internally sighed.
"So, I didn't catch your name." He said.
"That's because I didn't throw it." I replied with a dull tone.
"Well, I'm Drew. I'm the new student here." He said, not catching my attempt to end the conversation.
I nodded at him and turned back to my notebook as the teacher started the lesson.
"Psst..." I heard Drew whisper as he kicked my chair. I was getting really annoyed now.
I turned around and gave him my best glare.
"What do you want?" I hissed.
That idiot just smirked and went back to writing in his notebook. I clenched my fists in anger. I bet my ears were blowing out steam right now.
"Zoey, how does the theme of resurrection relate to Sydney Carton in A Tale of Two Cities?" Great, my teacher just had to call on me at this moment.
"Uhm, well Carton dies for Darnay, so he is resurrected into the hearts of those he saved...?" I ended my sentence uncertainly.
"That is one way to look at it. Good job Zoey. Anyone else have other ideas?" Ms. Lawrence asked the class.
I took this opportunity to glare at Drew, who was silently laughing at me.

I was so relieved when lunch came around. I met Melanie at my locker and we walked to lunch together.
"So, did you have any classes with that new guy?" She asked, winking.
I just rolled my eyes. "Just English class. And he is so annoying. I almost punched him. Although I did push him off his chair because he was occupying mine."
Melanie gasped. "Oh em gee! You guys talked to each other!"
I looked at her like she was crazy. As you can tell, she was more the girly girl that liked gossip while I was just normal and dull.
We grabbed our food and sat down at our usual table. Then Melanie started stabbing me with her finger.
"Ow, Mel, calm down. What's going on?" I asked while rubbing my shoulder.
Drew had walked in casually, making everyone's heads turn his way. Especially the girls. Including Melanie. I just shook my head and continued eating my food.
Of course, I was interrupted by someone sitting down in front of me. I looked up to see the one and only annoying person: Drew. I instantly frowned.
"C'mon cupcake, don't be so moody. I bet you enjoy having my presence here." He winked at me.
"I don't think you were given permission to sit here." I replied.
"Oh, I'm sorry. May I sit with you and Melanie?" He asked.
I was in the middle of opening my mouth to say no when Mel squealed.
"Of course!" She said. She just had to speak at this moment.
"Thanks! I don't have any friends, and I talked to Zoey there, so I thought, why not sit with her?" He said.
"Awesome! My name's Melanie, but you can call me Mel, like Zoey does. I'm her best friend." Melanie talked while I just ate.
The rest of lunch was filled with Mel's talking and Drew occasionally answering back. I just sat there and watched them flirt. I was glad that Melanie started connecting with him. That would get him to stop annoying me and Melanie wouldn't keep urging me to date him.
"Hey guys, I'm gonna go to the art room early before class starts, okay? I'll see you after school, Mel."
She nodded and I left the lunch room, dumping out my trash along the way.
I sat down in my seat and said hello to Ms. Taylor before taking out my portfolio and continuing my drawing. Ms. Taylor was by far one of the nicest teachers in school. She was young, having just graduated from college recently. But she was an awesome art teacher. You could tell that she really loved art by the way she talked and explained things to us. Her art was inspiring, too. Basically I wanted to be like her.
I was so into my drawing that I didn't hear the bell ring, indicating that class had started until someone started poking me repeatedly.
I looked over and saw Drew sitting there with a grin on his face.
"Guess what?" He asked.
"What?" I said annoyed. I didn't have time for this.
"I switched my schedule so I have all my classes with you!" He looked so excited I thought I might puke.
"And why did you do that?" I asked him.
"Because then we can see each other everyday!" He replied.
I just stared at him. My life just got worse.
I ignored him for the rest of the period, and put myself into my drawings. When the bell rang, I quickly gathered my stuff and walked to the door.
"Wait, Zoey!" I turned around and Drew stood towering over me.
"What?" I asked grumpily. I just wanted to go home and eat some ice cream then sit down to watch Netflix.
"I'm taking you out tonight at 6. We're going somewhere fun." He winked, then left. I stood there astonished. Who does he think he is? He can't force me to go anywhere. Plus, he doesn't even know where I live and he likes Melanie.
Ugh, this was getting too confusing. I just brushed it off; he probably was joking around.
"Hey girl!" I heard Mel's voice as I was opening my car door.
I smiled. She was always perky, I had no idea how she managed to do that. By the end of the day, I was looking like a monster.
"Hey Mel! What's up?"
"I'll tell you what's up. Drew is so sweet! We chatted a while after you left and I seriously think he likes you." Her face showed no signs of humor. She looked dead serious.
"I think you're just imagining things, Mel. Why would he ever like me? I mean, have you seen yourself?"
She giggled.
"Whatever, but when you realize he does like you, don't come crawling to me because I will just say, 'I TOLD YOU SO!!' Oh, can I sleep over tonight?" She asked with a hopeful look on her face.
"Sure. I need you help with something anyways." I was glad Mel wanted to come over. Then I could actually do something instead of eat ice cream and get fat.
"Ooo, what is it? I'm great a solving your problems." She said as we got in the car.
"Well, Drew was just messing around with me and he said that he was going to take me out tonight. But he was definitely tricking me. I just wanted to tell you." I said nervously, seeing what her reaction would be.
"Oh ya, I know." She replied calmly. My eyes widened. That was definitely not the response I was expecting.
"You what?" I nearly yelled.
"I know that he's taking you out. And it's not a joke. He asked me at lunch after you left if you were single and if he could take you out. Which is why I am coming over today. To help you get a complete makeover!" She screamed.
My eyes nearly fell out of my eyeball sockets. No, no , no. This wasn't happening. Melanie did not just set me up with Drew. But of course, there was no arguing with the great Melanie Bell.
I just grumbled under my breath while she bubbled beside me, thinking of all the outfits she would pair for me.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
While Melanie did stuff to my face, I thought of something. Drew didn't know where I lived, so he wouldn't be able to come. Which means that I don't have to go. But I didn't want to ruin Mel's happiness so I just let her put makeup on my face.
I was much happier now, knowing that I didn't have to go. I could curl up in my bed and watch movies with Mel.
"Done!" Mel said with a flourish of her hand.
I smiled at her energy. She had put out an outfit for me to wear. It was a loose grey tee which short distressed shorts. I wore my black converse and my sunglasses.
Right when I was about to tell Mel that Drew didn't have my address, the door bell rang. I looked at Mel in shock but she just smiled and went to open the door.
"Hey Drew!" I heard her say.
"Hey Mel! Is Zoey ready?" He said.
"Yep, she'll come down soon." When I heard her say that, I decided that there was no way out of this. So I walked down the stairs to see Drew wearing a white t-shirt with a black jacket, grey pants, and white canvas shoes. He looked hot, I had to admit that. But that didn't mean I liked him. I was sure that he liked Mel. So I just glared at him.
He chuckled. "You ready, Zoe?" He asked, using the annoying name that I hated.
"Don't call me that." I said.
"Why not?"
"Because I don't like it. C'mon let's get this thing over with."
"You really don't like me, huh?" He asked as he opened the car door for me. I just got in, not answering his question. He should know it by now.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked, curious if this was safe. My mom wouldn't be back until 8 at night, but Mel was home.
"It's a surprise." He stated, not giving any more information.
"Are you sure you aren't going to murder me?" I asked skeptically.
"Why would I want to murder someone as beautiful as you?" He questioned back. All I did was blush. Stupid cheeks. They just had to betray me at this moment. I stayed silent for the rest of the ride.
Finally, we arrived and I saw that he had taken me to the nearby county fair that was here for a week. I gasped, because I loved fairs. They had the best food, the best rides.
I saw Drew grin out of the corner of my eye as I took in everything. The fair was buzzing with excitement; people everywhere were waiting for it to get dark so the fireworks would start.
I looked at Drew who was watching me.
"OMG, I love fairs! Thank you so much for bringing me." I didn't even care that he was Drew, the guy that annoyed me so much.
I opened the car door and ran out, taking in the slightly warm air and delicious smells that were making my mouth drool.
Drew joined me, with two wrist bands in his hand.
"Let's do some rides before we eat, okay?" I nodded eagerly as he wrapped the band around my wrist. When his fingers brushed my skin, I felt tingles and I shivered.
"Are you cold?" He asked worriedly.
"Nope, I'm good." I gave him my best smile, but inside I was confused and emotions were running around. I decided to ignore them and dragged Drew to our first ride.
After about 10 rides, it started getting dark, and I was starving, so we decided to eat.
I had to eat the funnel cake because it was like necessary when visiting a fair.
"Mmmmm..." I nearly moaned when the funnel cake entered my mouth.
"Ahahahahahahahaa!!!" Drew was about to cry, the way he was laughing at me.
I glanced at him questioningly.
"I've never seen someone moan like that when eating funnel cake!" He said between laughs.
I just shook my head at him and continued eating my delicious food.
"C'mon it's almost time for the fireworks. I wanna ride one more ride." Drew said while looking at his watch.
I followed him until we reached the Ferris Wheel. The only thought that was going through my mind was that this was so cliche.
The operator was an old guy that looked like he rather be doing something else than this. He let us in and locked the gate.
As we went up, I couldn't help but gasp. It was beautiful. All the lights illuminated the fair.
"Look up, Zoey." I hear Drew say. So I did. And what I saw was breathtaking. We were near the top now, and I could see the fireworks clearly. I was mesmerized by their colors. Fireworks were my favorite. My grandpa used to bring me to a small hill where we would watch the 4th of July fireworks. It was one of the best memories I remembered spending with my grandpa.
Suddenly, the Ferris Wheel jerked back into motion, making me fall to the other side where Drew was. And coincidentally, I fell right onto him. I groaned as my face hit his hard chest. How cliche.
Drew cleared his throat, indicating that I was still on top of him. I looked up and saw his face just inches away from my face. I blushed and moved off him and sat next to him.
When the ride ended and the operator let us out, it was definitely awkward. I tried to talk to Drew to on the car ride back to make it not as awkward, but that didn't really work.
"Thanks for bringing me here, Drew. I had a really great time." I smiled at him kindly.
He cleared his throat.
"I had a great time, too. Thanks for giving me a chance to bring you." He said softly. By now, we were in front of my house and it was 8:30 pm.
"Good night" I told him as I opened the car door and waved him good bye.
Opening the front door, I saw Mel sitting with my mother, drinking hot chocolate and eating cookies. It was their favorite, which was funny. Mel loved the cookies my mom made and my mom loved the hot chocolate Mel made. They probably had a better relationship than me and my mom.
"Hey honey! How was your date?" She winked, putting emphasis on the word "date"
I rolled my eyes at her.
"It wasn't a date, Mom. We just went to the fair and rode rides as friends." I smiled. "I had a really great time, though."
Both my mom and Mel squealed happily.
"Well, I'm gonna go take a shower. I'm glad tomorrow's Saturday because I'm wiped out. Mel, you can just come up when you're done having tea time with my mom." I joked.
With the shower running, I thought about the fair tonight. With Drew. And the tingles I felt when his hand brushed my skin.
