17|| Annabeth
Back in the common room, (now including Ron, who was half asleep as they woke him up from the couch) they were all seated around the fire facing Annabeth.
"Explain," Harry demanded. The candlelight flickered against the lenses of his glasses, making his eyes literally look like they were flaming in anger.
"I was going to." Annabeth looked annoyed and completely unperturbed by the fiery image.
"Are you sure, Wise Girl?" Percy whispered.
Annabeth nodded. "They should know." Then she raised her voice so the others could hear and cleared her throat. "Okay, let's start at the beginning. Do you three know about Greek gods?"
"What?" Ron said, but Harry and Hermione nodded their heads.
"I know there's Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Ares, Athena, Apollo and Artemis," Hermione offered. "They're some of the important ones."
"That's a start," Thalia said evenly, smirking slightly at the title, the important ones. If only they knew how important Hecate was, and Nemesis and Hypnos and all the other supposedly minor gods.
"Okay then. Well, Ron, basically the ancient Greeks believed that the gods made up the world. There's a god of water, a god of the sun, a goddess of wisdom, a god of healing, even a goddess of hygiene. There are also myths that those gods met with mortals and, um, had children with them," Annabeth explained, stuttering in an attempt to describe the relationships between gods and mortals.
Ron gagged in an overly exaggerated fashion, earning a slap and a scowl from Hermione. "Oh hush, Ron. Don't be immature."
"But it's disgusting! Why would you just make a baby with random people you've never met? I bet those kids had real problems when they grew up." Ron said, shuddering.
"Oh yeah, real problems," Percy muttered angrily to Annabeth.
"Anyways," Thalia snapped. "Those children, or demigods, grew up and did great things. For example, Heracles, fought many monsters and eventually was offered immortality, which he took. And yes," she said quickly to Harry who was about to speak up. "His name is Heracles. Not Hercules. That's his Roman form."
"Huh." Harry was staring very attentively at them. Percy guessed that was the most he'd paid attention all year.
"Other demigods did famous things. You know George Washington? Child of Athena, the goddess of Wisdom and battle strategy," said Annabeth proudly. "Amelia Earhart, Daughter of Zeus. Blackbeard, son of Ares. Circe, daughter of Hecate. You get the idea."
"Still think they have problems, Ron?" Nico asked coldly. Ron flushed though it may just have been the glow of the fire.
"Demigods still exist today. In fact, you know some."
Harry perked up. "Really? Who? That's so cool! I bet they're awesome."
Annabeth chuckled. "Are you really that dense? We are demigods."
Hermione frowned. "Unlike the wizarding world, the gods are intricate myths. For one, Circe is actually a witch, one of the most powerful recorded in the wizarding community. She taught at Beauxbatons for fifteen years in 1703 before retiring. And Amelia Earhart..." she trailed off as she noticed four states targeted at her.
Then Ron spoke up. "I agree with Hermione. You do understand you sound crazy, right? Harry?"
Harry slowly shook his head. "Nah, it seems legit. I mean, we're wizards for goodness sakes. If Hagrid can gamble for dragon eggs, why can't they have gods as parents?"
"Thank you," Percy said thankfully, patting Harry on the shoulder.
Hermione raised an eyebrow. "Can you prove it? You can't defy natural, solid facts. There are history records and eye witnesses of Professor Circe Thea."
Thalia stood up. "Dam right we can prove it," she said, throwing her wand on the armchair behind her. Then she held up her hand. A thin bolt of blue electricity flew from the tips of her fingers and hit the wall behind Hermione, who jumped to the side. Thalia smirked and introduced, "Daughter of Zeus, god of the sky and king of the gods, Lieutenant of Artemis, goddess of the hunt and the moon."
"And pine tree," snickered Nico. Thalia shot him a death glare. Ron frowned in confusion, Harry looked back and forth between Percy and Thalia as if to see if they were serious.
"Cornstalk," Thalia shot back.
"Corn?"
"Hades," corrected Nico, vanishing on the spot.
"He just— he—" Ron looked very impressed. "Wow, Nico's learned to apparate!"
"Of course he hasn't," Hermione said impatiently. "You can't apparate in and out of Hogwarts."
"I didn't," said Nico from the other side of the room. "I'm a demigod."
"And were you a plant as well?" Harry asked Percy.
"No," said Percy. He lifted his hand and suddenly the window next to them shattered as a jet of water flew through, drenching both the fire and everyone in the room except himself. "I can breathe underwater. Poseidon's my dad."
"What about your dad, Annabeth?" asked Harry, wiping his glasses on his sleeve.
"Fredrick Chase, a mortal. My mom is Athena, goddess of wisdom and battle strategy." Annabeth said with pride.
"Do you have any powers?" asked Hermione incredulously.
In response, Annabeth twirled her knife and fired it at the wall. It grazed the top of Ron's head, impaling the wall behind him.
"No powers," she said with a smile. "I'm just normal."
"Why do you have a knife?" Harry asked as Ron trembled and patted his head to make sure it was intact. "That's dangerous!"
"Because we want to survive," Thalia explained, twirling her silver knives with one hand. Her eyes glinted like her knives. "Demigods give off a sort of scent which monsters follow. Monsters hunt and kill demigods, so we need a form of protection. Aka, weapons." She chucked her knife at a fly to her left, pinning it to the wall by its wings.
"So, you smell?" Ron asked.
Percy sniffed his armpit. "I'm not that gross," he said uncertainly.
"So, what weapons do you use?" Harry asked, eager to see more.
"Imperial gold knife." Annabeth unsheathed the dagger and held it out for them to see.
"Sword," said Nico simply.
"Knives and a bow," said Thalia.
"Riptide," Percy said, twirling his pen between his fingers. Ron stared.
"This is a pen," he emphasized.
"Yes, Ronald. This is a pen," Percy said seriously.
"So..." Harry looked at Percy like he was crazy. "Does it shoot lasers?"
"I wish," Percy snorted. "Nah, it writes in bronze ink."
"That's it?" Harry looked ready to laugh.
"It also does this." Percy uncapped Riptide and the bronze sword spring out.
Harry and Ron stared, gasping in surprise. "Woah," they said in unison. Percy recapped it.
"If you're not wizards, how did you get into Hogwarts?" demanded Hermione.
"Dumbledore," Nico said, smirking. "He's a descendant of Hecate."
Hermione was speechless. Ron was gaping and Harry was in shock.
"Dumbledore?" Ron spluttered. "He's a demigod?"
"A child of one."
Hermione's expression hardened. "That's a dangerous claim."
"Then ask him yourself," said Annabeth in exasperation. "Do you really still not believe us? You're in a castle school for magic, for gods sakes."
Hermione tapped her fingers on her leg, thinking carefully. "Let's just say... I believe you have powers. But claiming you're descended from mythological gods is much less believable than simply harnessing a different kind of magic."
On that note, she turned and headed up the stairs. Before she vanished in the darkness, she turned.
"And I will be asking Dumbledore tomorrow."
"Thank you," muttered Thalia.
Annabeth turned to Harry and Ron. "Do you believe us?" she asked.
Harry shrugged. "Sure, I guess, it's just kind of weird."
Ron grinned. "I'm with Harry."
Percy smiled at them. "Thanks. We should sleep. It's almost three in the morning. Good thing tomorrow's Saturday."
