Chapter 6 -- Stuff up his sleeve

Red Raven is devious, sure. He's probably the most intelligent super out there too. That does not give him the right to burn down people's houses and then take their insurance money. What villain has the audacity to do that? What is going through his mind when he does these things?

"Della, I really want to come with you." Jonas has been pacing the floor just as I have been.

"No, Jonas. What would happen if your identity was revealed? I have invisibility on my side."

What's the point of my invisibility anyways? If I can travel faster than the speed of light, who can even see me? Honestly, I don't see the need in my invisibility after Ash has made Jonas and I suits.

"Ash," I turn from Jonas to Ash while I stand in the middle of her bedroom. "Keep working on the costume when I'm gone. Just because Raven knows who I am doesn't mean the rest of the town needs to know."

She nods her head and I look to Jonas who couldn't look more upset. He sits in Ash's desk chair and hangs his head down.

Ash nudges me and I walk towards him. He'll come with me next time, for sure. But I honestly hope there won't be a next time.

"Jonas, I change my mind. Come with me, you can stand behind a building and read his mind. You can help." His eyes meet mine and brighten at hearing my words.

"Really? Wait, so, then you really expect this to be the end?"

Well he most certainly picks the greatest times to read my mind. I didn't want to leave him behind if I plan on taking Red Raven down once and for all. While I'm hopeful, I don't have a master plan to do this. Jonas has been waiting for this day, so maybe he's got something in mind. He's the closest thing I have to a secret weapon.

"Let's do it." He claps his hands together and runs out the bedroom door. Ash and I exchange a glance, waiting for him to come back in the room. When he does, he says, "So, um, how does this whole hero thing work?"

"Beats me. I'm still trying to figure it out." I shrug with a light laugh.

Laughing is not something I typically do. With these two goofballs I usually have to be the mature one to keep them on track. I'm surprised Mickey likes me for my personality because I'm such a stick in the mud. Maybe it's because I don't ever know what I'm getting into with these Raven situations or why I have to go in alone.

Since middle school I've been trying to figure out my purpose and to know that I'm still finding my way makes being a hero a little discouraging. Not to say that having powers has ruined my life... But it's made being normal even harder than it was before powers. Back when I was the dork of the school. Perhaps this is why Sophia Brown dislikes the idea of me being with a guy like Mickey. It goes against the status quo. News flash, this isn't High School Musical.

"Well, we don't have much time to figure this out. But if he burnt down all the houses on main street, he's probably going to rob them. And then the insurance companies about three miles from there. Now, I've made this chip," Ash places a tiny device in the palm of my hand. "So work your magic and find some place to put this on him. Because we're not always going to be able to guess at where he's at."

"You think he's got better stuff up his sleeve?" Jonas scoffs.

"That's true. I don't think he even has a motive or a grand plan. I think he's just a devious teenage boy with too many powers." I slide my sneakers on and tie my mask around my face.

"Too many powers? Del, he can only control behavior." Jonas informs me. I forgot to fill him in about the flying thing.

"I'll catch you up on the way back. We need to get there now."

In that single word, I grab his arm and bolt to the heart of the city. When we get there, Red Raven is floating above a swarm of people in the streets, ready to throw a car on top of them. Mothers cling to their children, who are wailing at the top of their lungs. My heart is pounding in my chest. Jonas stands like a statue, gawking.

"Jonas. Hide. Now." He obeys my command but is dumbfounded at Red Raven's newfound ability. Just as I was.

"How do you like me now, Lincoln Grove?" Red Raven tosses the car towards the civilians below and I dash in to save them. As tough as it was to count every head, I estimated a crowd of 20 people were escorted into the building. It was a matter of me running back and forth for a couple of seconds. I secure them in the same library I had placed the town commissioners in, I look over my shoulder to face Red Raven who has a terrifying glare in his grey eyes. No one has grey eyes naturally. Ugh, he must be wearing contacts!

"Well, if it isn't Rapid Glare." He lowers himself to stand in front of me.

"I'm not here to chat." I punch his face, throwing us both off. I'm not going to deny I've always wanted to do that, though.

He smirks. "Wow, Della has some fighting skills about her. Even I didn't know that."

"Just so we're clear, my name is Rapid Glare now." I kick his shin, but that doesn't seem to do much. He swings his arm out towards my face, but I'm still in shock I got a punch in. Even with my super speed, I'm not fast enough to defend the fist aimed for my face.

"Fine. No powers, huh? Is that how we're going to fight today? Well, alright." He tries to swing again, but this time I'm prepared and I duck.

He lunges towards me, but I use my invisibility to disappear in front of him. I reappear a foot away from his drawn back fist.

"I never agreed to those terms." It's my turn to smirk as I race towards him to kick his jaw, his stomach, and swipe his feet out from under him.

He gathers his composure quickly, brushing off his shoulders. His fingers right his mask that became crooked. If only I could've taken a peek at the boy hiding behind the mask.

"You know what I think? You're just a coward that doesn't know how to deal with his problems. You take your anger out on the town that had no part in your dad's death!" I can't believe I just yelled those words at a boy who could very much end my existence. We begin to circle around each other, in a position ready to pounce.

He stiffens, and I know I've infuriated him. I try not to flinch. I meant what I said.

"Me? A coward? Take a look in the mirror! You don't even know what you're doing!" He lunges towards me, but I speed to the brick wall of the library. He fumes, then follows me.

All of a sudden he's right in front of me and I find I can't move. He's mind-manipulating me. I look deep into his eyes. I'm still in control of my words for the moment.

"I know I have to defeat you. As for you, I'm not sure you even have a grand scheme. You've been at this for at least four years. If you were going to kill anyone, you would've done it by now."

Red Raven cocks his head to the side. A sly smirk comes to his lips and I cringe as his hand comes up to slap me. He slaps me, but his face softens immediately after. What kind of villain am I dealing with?

I can't get out of his grip, but I don't feel like he's manipulating my mind anymore. As we both hear sirens coming our way, Red Raven becomes distracted and I quickly turn invisible. His first mistake was turning his head away from me for even a second. Red Raven searches for me. I guess even a genius can't figure out I'm still in the same spot. All of a sudden, Jonas tackles him to the ground.

The cop cars show up right in time. It doesn't matter that he'll be taken back to a cell again. This time I'm sure they'll take better precautions. But when he gets out again, I'll be ready to fight him.

The Sheriff picks Jonas off of Red Raven and drags the villain away to the cop car. Red Raven's head is duxked down to go in the car, and I sneak the tiny chip Ash gave me onto Red Raven's back. He's seething mad, trying his best to jar the handcuffs loose. His animal behavior resembles that of a rabid raccoon. Maybe if he was thinking a little clearer, he could escape the cop car with a wave of his hand.

Jonas comes running up to me when I've made my way back to the library. He's out of breath, he's sweating, and his eyes give off an aura of fear.

"What happened? Did you read his mind? What's his plan?" I rattle off questions before he can process them. He shakes his head violently, cutting me off from rambling any longer.

"I don't know his plan. All I really know is what he thinks of you." He struggles to maintain eye contact with me. I take into account the black smudges across his cheeks that darken his already tan skin. His Adam's apple bobs when he swallows.

"When he had you pinned, all he was thinking was 'I can't hurt her. Not like this'."
