Chapter 26 -- Thunder

It wasn't until 10 minutes of me running all over town that I decided to go to Ash's house. I debated on going back to the hospital, but I knew Jonas' parents would have a few things to say to me.

How could my parents hide their identities from Mason and I for so long? How did I never put the pieces together?

My thoughts cease as my feet come to a halt. Ash's house usually looks more inviting. Something inside of me shrinks as I step onto the front lawn.

Shouldn't you tell Mason first? My mind tries to dictate my actions. Who knows where Mason is though?

As I step onto the front step, I'm about to knock on the door when something at the window catches my eye. Ash is sitting with Mason in the bay window. I knew Mason stayed behind with her at the hospital, but I didn't think he was going to be here.

Mason leans into her and plants a kiss on her lips. Whoa. Called it! I knew they'd get together eventually.

I frantically knock on the door, excited and anxious all at once. Ash and Mason pull apart instantly and Ash runs to the door. Okay, that was a bit strange.

Ash alone answers the door, trying to hide her blush. Alright, I'll play along. For the moment.

"I have something big to tell you." I start off. She reluctantly moves to the side to let me in. Once I'm in the house, I wait to spill the beans.

"Have you seen Mason? This involves him too." Before she answers, I make my way to her kitchen, knowing this is the direction Mason bolted for.

"Actually, I haven't. Last I saw him was at the hospital." She lies. I keep a blank expression.

"What's wrong, though?" She asks.

"I can't tell you until I find Mason." I state bluntly.

Suddenly Mason walks in from the connected dining room. He freezes when he spots me.

"I thought you would have left by now." His face pales.

Busted.

I reach out and grab his ear and I grip onto Ash's wrist, dragging them into the living room.

"Spill." I demand, plopping them both on the couch. Ash and Mason exchange a glance.

"We're a couple." Ash spits out, while Mason doesn't make eye contact.

I scoff, "I figured as much. Why are you sneaking around though? You should've told me, I've shipped it since you had your little geek fight." I cross my arms over my chest, waiting for their reply.

Mason answers, "We've been together longer than you think."

I cock an eyebrow at him. "Two months to be exact." He elaborates.

It takes a bit of strength to keep my jaw from falling. How have they kept this secret for so long?

"Why didn't you tell me you were dating?" I ask, baffled.

Mason quickly snaps his head to look at Ash. "You don't have to tell her."

I cough, "Uh, you do now. Tell me what?" My anger is harder and harder to manage. Storm clouds gather outside, waiting for my signal to release their own rage.

Ash sighs, "I convinced Mason to be a hero instead of a villain."

My brain tries to imagine why this was so hard to confess. Girlfriends and boyfriends usually can persuade each other to do things, that much I understand. Then it hits me. Mason didn't become a hero on his own freewill or because he chose to help his only sister. Ash convinced him.

My heart shatters in the slightest. I knew Mason and I weren't close, but I thought we had reached a new chapter in our lives. One where he decided to help his sister and become a good guy.

"If you didn't want to be a hero, how did one girl change your mind?" I don't meet my eyes with either of them. I've gotten really good at hiding my disappointment lately.

"She told me you needed help and that you were Rapid Glare." Mason speaks softly.

"But that's not it, is it?" I snap. Thunder cracks outside, and even I jump at the sound.

Ash interupts, "I blackmailed him. I saw him fly into his bedroom one night when I left your house. I told him he had to tell your parents who he was when I found out. He refused, so I said I would. Unless he helped you."

The thunder continues to crack. Rain begins to beat down on the roof. The steady sound pulling me to go outside, away from all of the lies. A place to escape the betrayal.

Mason sighs, "What did you come here for?"

I look up into his eyes, the ones that resemble my own. The similarities stop past our appearances.

"I found out our parents are supers." I put on the line.

Mason's eyes light up, "You know who they are?"

"None other than Titania and Vortex." My eyes don't waver from his. My voice doesn't shake. Mason looks down at his feet on the beige carpet.

"I knew we had to have super parents, but how did they keep that from us?" He shakes his head.

"You knew." I accuse.

"I talked to Blacklight before Jonas fell out of the ventilation shaft. I found out for a super to have more than one power, they have to have two parents with the super gene because it's recessive."

"Both of us have more than one." I confirm. He nods along.

"Why didn't you tell me that sooner? Why have you been keeping stuff from me?" I try to keep a strong voice and my head held high.

Mason stands from the couch and walks towards the door. He opens it and ushers for me to leave. My jaw tightens as I watch Ash remain seated in silence. I make my way to the doorway.

"Fine. I hope you two enjoy each other. I know I'm not enjoying either of you at the moment." I walk out into the rain.

Who's next to lie to me?

***

Jonas was out of the hospital in a day's time. I'm not sure if he fought to get out of that place or if he truly recovered that quickly.

One thing I know for sure is that he was frantic to catch up on school work from the one day he missed. If that doesn't sum up our crappy school system, I don't know what does.

At lunch, Jonas was finishing a book assignment for English. He was completely silent as he flipped through the last few pages. The bandage on his head would occasionally wrinkle in confusion.

"Why is everyone so quiet?" By everyone, he means Ash and myself. There was still unresolved tension in the air between us. I wasn't going to apologize, though. I had done nothing wrong. She was the one that kept secrets from me and let Mason kick me out of her house.

"Della, Ash is really sorry for lying to you." Jonas doesn't look up from his book.

"Well I would like for her to defend me next time instead of letting my brother kick me out of her house." I spit.

"Why was Mason at your house?" Jonas asks, still not looking up from his book. He bites his thumbnail in deep thought.

Ash finally speaks, "We're dating."

Jonas suddenly looks up, "Huh. I guess I didn't catch that one. Here," He takes out his brown leather wallet and slides a five dollar bill towards me across the table.

"What's this for?" I ask as Jonas' eyes wander back to his book.

"Don't I owe you for being wrong or something?" He waves his hand around in dismissal.

I look back to Ash, "You hid the fact you were dating my brother. You blackmailed him to be a hero. You let him kick me out of your own house. What kind of best friend are you?"

"I thought I was your best friend." Jonas interjects, his head still down.

Ignoring him, Ash begins to explain herself. "Please, I didn't know what to do. I didn't know how to tell you I convinced Mason to be a good guy without telling you we were a couple. And I couldn't tell you we were a couple without it being weird."

I stare at her blankly without a word.

"I'm sorry, Della. I won't hide anything from you anymore." Ash speaks softly.

Jonas adds, "Now you hug each other and make friendship bracelets." When he looks up, he's met with both of our glares.

"Or not, that's fine too. Look, you two can let this wreck your friendship or you can put it behind you. Della," he turns to face me, "What if you hadn't told Ash about you and me? We'd be in a similar situation."

"Yeah." I admit, not meeting Ash's eyes across the table.

"And what if you never told her that you were a super?"

"Yeah." I continue to reply.

"And will you go to the homecoming dance with me?" Jonas throws in. Before I continue my mundane replies, I look beside me to answer the crazy boy.

"Yeah." I reply with a cheesy smile and roll my eyes.

"So do you forgive me Del?" Ash interrupts.

I sigh, pondering if I really want to get rid of my best friend.

"Yeah, I forgive you. It's too hard to break in a new best friend." I grin and walk over to her side of the table to hug her. When I walk back over to my side, I observe Mickey across the cafeteria. While I hear Jonas mumbling something about how he is my best friend too, I lock eyes with the boy I don't recognize anymore. The boy who has threatened my life and made a mockery out of me.

My voice is hoarse as I take my seat. "We have to stick together guys. He can't win this war."

A/N- PLEASE READ

Soooo... The next few chapters are about to get really intense, even though this chapter was kind of a filler. Once all of the secrets are revealed and the action comes to an end, I have decided...

I am going to write a sequel!!!

There should be 5 chapters left after this one, if I follow my outline properly... At that point, I will be taking off about a month or so to plan the book out a little further and also just read some of the books I have in my Wattpad library. Especially the superhero books!

Thank you guys for reading!
Always, Sunny
