Chapter 18 -- Hail storm
At Lincoln Grove, a pep rally is the most time wasting activity. Granted, if the marching band played, it wasn't as boring. The marching band only appeared at the football game pep rallies. The basketball team got a wimpy spirit walk where they paraded through the halls and finished off with a showing of their skills in the gym.
I put up with it, however, considering I was dating Mickey. Ash and I stood beside each other in the bleachers as the players made lay-ups. "Have you seen Jonas?" Ash asked me, scanning the crowd of people entering the gym.
"No," I replied, watching Mickey score again. He brings the end of his jersey up to wipe off his sweaty forehead. I'm allowed to admire his abs right?
She punches my arm, to which I turn on her sharply. "What was that for?" I rub my bruised forearm.
"What'd you do to Jonas?" She yells at me. Her phone is grasped in her hand.
My eyebrows crease in confusion, "Nothing?" What is she talking about, and why does she look panicked?
"He says he's not coming to the pep rally." She stomps her foot in frustration. More like jealously because he decided not to be here and she did.
"Well where is he?" I ask. I'll admit, I was not worried. I was still checking out Mickey. Mickey stopped for a second to wave at me, but I heard giggling girls behind me thinking it was for them. I didn't wave back, I just smiled.
"He's not responding. He said he'd had enough-" Coach Krites picks up a microphone and starts to go on about the basketball team's amazing winning streak and how we're going to do in the playoff game tonight. I can't hear myself think over the booming of his voice. I grab the phone out of Ash's hand to read for myself what he texted.
I've had a rough day and I kinda feel sick to my stomach. I'm not going to the pep rally. Plus, I've had enough of certain people ruining my day.
"Certain people?" I shout over the roar of the student body.
She shrugs, but I know she knows who he's referring to. Is it me? What did I do to him? She obviously thinks it's me or she wouldn't have accused me.
"Ash," I look her dead in the eyes, "Where is he? Don't tell me you don't know." She sighs and reluctantly informs me of his whereabouts.
I duck out of the bleachers and tell the teachers guarding the door I need to use the bathroom. Once out of sight, I turn invisible and sneak out of the school. I'm starting to get more use out of my invisibility.
Jonas is probably just arriving at the old house. I completely forgot about meeting Crossfire. Is this why Jonas was upset with me? I wasn't asked to be here until after school, though.
The weeds grow around the frame of the house, creating an eerie feel. I cautiously grab the knob and push open the door. The first thing I see is Jonas hitting a punching bag.
"Jonas?" I begin. Crossfire is nowhere in sight.
"What?" He doesn't even look over at me. He throws in another punch at the bright red bag swinging from the ceiling. Why didn't I notice that it was there yesterday?
"Look at me." I command.
He grabs the punching bag dangling in the air and strips his gloves off. Now he's normal Jonas, wearing his t-shirt and jeans.
"Don't you have a pep rally to get back to?" He sneers, turning back to the punching bag.
I rush up to his side, grabbing his shoulders and turning him to face me. He draws away from me, acting childish.
"Why are you brushing me off, Jonas? I wasn't even supposed to be here until 3:30."
"Like you would have remembered anyways." He mutters.
I push him up against the wall, unexpected to both of us. He tries to wiggle free, but I think he was too stunned that I pinned him that easily.
"What's the matter with you?" I screech.
Just then the door to the house swings open and in steps Crossfire. He looks up after taking his keys out of the door to see us standing in his home.
"I don't remember giving either of you a key." He slams the door behind him, dumbfounded.
"It was unlocked." I continue to hold my arm across Jonas' neck when talking to Crossfire.
He nods, a little angry with himself. Crossfire turns to kick the base of the door. Like that's going to help anything.
"I told you guys 3:30." He states, setting down a huge green duffel bag (more like a body bag).
"Is it a problem? Did you need some time to stash the body?" I tilt my head.
He sighs, "No, it can wait. Why aren't you in school?"
It's my turn to sigh, "I'm trying to get this idiot to tell me that exact answer."
Crossfire steps closer to us and I can see Jonas biting the inside of his cheek in annoyance. "I don't think this is a very nice way of asking."
"Said the villain." I remark.
Crossfire runs his hand through his sleek black hair. It sticks up from the excessive amount of gel used. I hate it when Mickey puts gel in his hair; some guys just can't pull off the look.
"You know what," Jonas pushes me away, causing me to lose my balance and stumble. Luckily I don't fall, but I could punch him right now, harder than he ever punched the punching bag.
"I'll leave you two to train together. I have no place here, I'm just a sidekick." Jonas goes to walk out of the house when Crossfire grabs him for me.
"Dude, chill out. What's the matter with you? Red Raven get in your head?" Jonas releases his arm from Crossfire's grasp and glares at me. My best friend has never looked at me like that, with pure hatred.
"Something like that. Why don't you just go to that stupid basketball game tonight, Della? Leave the town defenseless just like Titania," He scoffs, "I thought you were a hero, but all you care about is your incredibly popular boyfriend." He's almost out the door when I stop him with my next words.
"Is that what this is about? You're jealous of Mickey?" He takes a deep breath, becoming more irritated by the second. He turns around to face me one last time.
"Jealous? No. Upset? Yes. But if I told you he was playing you, you wouldn't believe me. You're lost in your own world. Have fun in it."
The door makes a loud bang as he exits. Crossfire watches my every move to see how I react. I don't move a muscle, but instead I speak my mind.
"I've got a plan."
***
"But I don't think that." Crossfire says.
"Just say it, you don't have to agree with it." I roll my eyes in exasperation.
He clasps his hands together, "This is supposed to get him to confess what he's feeling?"
"Yes." I huff.
He rubs his fingers around his scraggly beard. I use the word 'beard' lightly because it was barely more than stubble, but it was enough to where it looked messy.
"So I tell him to come by tomorrow and come alone. He'll ask why, I tell him he's our one chance at defeating Red Raven. Do I have all that right?"
"Yes, and if he's my friend he'll come to my defense and tell you what really upset him. Got it?"
He nods and stands up to walk me out the door. I wasn't planning on going to the basketball game anymore, but Mickey seemed pretty worried when I disappeared from school. I thought I could at least make an appearance.
"Thank you for going through all this trouble. It must have taken some time for you to convert to the good side." I awkwardly step off the porch.
He shrugs as he backs up to the door, "It was easier than you think." He walks back into the shack and I'm left alone on the sidewalk.
I just hope my plan works. Otherwise, I think I just lost one of my best friends, and I'm not entirely sure why.
***
"Pass it, James!" I hear one guy shout in the first quarter of the game. It's pretty clear our team is not working together, and evidently James is a ball hog. As of right now we're only ahead by two points, so they better get a new plan.
I watch Mickey swallow a swig of Gatorade and call someone's name out, whom I recognize as his best friend, Liam. The blonde haired freakishly tall player runs off the court to tag Mickey's hand. Even I know that Mickey should have replaced James, not Liam.
"Come on, guys!" A voice I would recognize anywhere hollers out. What is Sophia doing here? Doesn't she have some puppies to torture?
I try not to look over at her, especially make eye contact with her. In school, she made me feel like nothing. As Rapid Glare, I broke into her house without her knowing. But for the moment, I had to play the weaker version of myself.
Perhaps the ditzy blonde was playing the same game I was; ignore her and she'll go away. Neither of us left.
It was the fourth quarter when my phone vibrated in my pocket. It was mom, and I couldn't help but panic. I left school and met Jonas and an ex villain at an abandoned shack. I ran back to school to tell Ash what was happening, to which she straightened up and acted extremely odd, even for her dorky self. Then when I went home for a brief period, I forgot to mention to my parents I was going back to school for the basketball game at 6:00. If they knew about anything I did today, there was a 99 percent chance I was going to be grounded for a decade.
"Hello?" I dared to speak with a normal voice. If I acted timid, she'd know I did something wrong.
"Where are you?" She asks, her voice raising a little.
"At the basketball game." I reply, fidgeting with the hem of my fitted tee.
"Hurry home. If you're out with Jonas again-"
"Don't worry about him, mom. We're not exactly on the best terms right now." Sophia looks over at me for a split second. She probably thinks I was talking about Mickey and now she can swoop in. In your dreams, Sophia.
"Oh. Well, um, let me know when you're on your way back." I hang up the phone after an "Okay." emerges from my lips.
Mickey is dribbling down the court with four seconds to score before the end of the game. He positions himself to shoot, he squats down, and takes the shot right as a player from the other team runs into the back of him. The ball goes in the net, the crowd roars and jumps to their feet, and Lincoln Grove wins the last game of the season.
Just as I'm about to climb down the bleachers, Sophia seems to be racing me. Oh, the irony. Though, I don't use my powers to rush down to the gym floor.
Except I didn't expect her to go right to Mickey. She taps on his shoulder, and I observe as Mickey spins around. What I was hoping would happen is he would brush her off and walk out the door. What he actually does tears my heart into two pieces.
His eyes light up and he allows her to wrap her arms around his neck. He picks her up by her waist and spins her around in the air. When he sets her down, I'm forced to watch the two of them make out in front of the entire gym. He doesn't have lean down to her height. My stomach churns and I use my super speed to get out of the building unnoticed. It's clear Sophia knew I was there and that I was watching. The fact is Mickey was just as guilty as her.
Once at my car, my blood starts to boil. I had a feeling he was cheating this whole time since we went to Sophia's house. Jonas told me otherwise. Mickey told me he loves me. I guess I had clouded vision after a while.
Clouds. I think I know a way for me to get even. I release the handle of my car door and turn invisible. My fists are clenched, anger coursing through my veins.
I spot Mickey's car and waltz right over to the parking spot. Here goes nothing. I try to recreate the feeling Crossfire told me about when referring to my newfound ability of invisibility. Channeling all of my anger at his car, I mentally demand the sky to pour down on his car.
Not rain, either.
Hail the size of golf balls hits the hood, the roof, and the trunk of his wanna-be sportscar. Oops, I didn't know I could do this much damage. Though I keep up this weather for a good 30 seconds when I realize I have an audience of teenagers watching hail hit just Mickey's car. I dust off my imaginary hands and walk back to my car. I wait until Mickey exits the gymnasium before I leave in my unharmed blue Ford Focus.
Mickey and Sophia make their way to his car and I watch the panic creep into him. First he pulls on his hair, then he hugs the car, and then he yells out. Sophia grips into his shoulders for support. The two of them make me want to puke.
When I turn the key in the ignition, I text my mom I'm coming home. There's a hail storm I don't want to get caught in.
A/N
.....So.....
That happened.
This was a really emotional chapter to write. Della and Jonas fighting, and now Della getting her heart broken, it's all too much!
