Chapter 14 -- You're just a shadow
Jonas throws his hands up in exasperation.
"Seriously?! You get another dope super power and I'm stuck with reading people's minds?!" Jonas exclaims, loud enough for his neighbors to hear, I'm sure. So much for secret identities.
"Hey, Jonas, calm down." Ash says, coming over from the door frame.
He takes a deep breath and sighs heavily. My slight eagerness has left my entire being. Jonas may have overreacted just a smidge, but he's right. I'm not a hero, so he should have my powers. If I could give him my powers, I would.
Ash and Jonas have a whisper war behind my back as I look up at the sky. It continues to snow. All of our teeth are chattering.
"Okay, you're right." Jonas and Ash break and turn towards me with a gleam in their eyes.
"I'm sorry, Del. I'm just a --"
"No. Stop," I hold up my hand, starting to get a headache. "Please. I know this isn't fair for you and if I could get rid of my powers at this point, I would. If I could pass my powers to you, I would. I'm not a hero, Jonas. I don't even know--" Jonas grabs my hand and whisks me off my feet. As he tosses me over his shoulder, Ash heads back inside his house. What's going on? She's not going to question this?
"Jonas put me down." I comment. He slides me off his shoulders and sets me down with his hands on my waist.
"You need to see something. So rush us to the top of the town hall building five towns west of here."
Curiously, I watch his eyes search my own eyes. I grab his hand and rush us to Kingsville. This better be good.
We reach the roof of the building with a bit of a hassle, considering I was practically carrying him to get us here. I may have mentioned this before, but I'm not the most fit person. It's pretty upsetting to confess such a thing, but I don't have time to work out between school and trying to find a way to end Red Raven's plans. You know, if he has plans.
Turning my heel, I face Jonas to see him smirking. I cock an eye brow, only for him to gesture for me to sit down in response. We carefully sit on the edge of the building.
"What are we doing here, Jonas? There's ten villains on the loose!"
Jonas quickly snaps his neck to face me, "Shhh! Della, just, observe for a minute."
I huff and cross my arms. What am I looking for? There's a burglary a few blocks away, if my eyesight isn't failing me. I cautiously turn my body to Jonas. He's watching intently at a homeless center.
"What's this all about?" I can't hold back my question anymore.
He runs his hand through his dark hair, ruffling it for only a second before it falls back into place. A slight sigh comes from his lips as he puts on a patient facade. He never shows patience towards me.
"All those people down there, they need a hero too."
I blink before replying, "Almost every town has a designated hero, they'll be fine." I mutter the last part, not feeling very sympathetic at the moment.
"They don't seem to..." He turns his head to look me in the eyes. "They need someone who's brave."
"They can look somewhere else." I stand up from the edge and turn my heel. Only, making that move too quickly was my downfall. Literally.
"Jonas!" I reach for him but grasp at the air as I tumble over the side of the building. A window ledge a foot below the roof is what I grip onto to keep from my death.
"Jonas!" I squeal, not caring how desperate I sound at the moment. When Jonas peers over the edge, I begin to wail like a baby. I can't die! Not today!
"Della, you're not going to die, I've got you." He's a foot higher than me, and last I checked we didn't bring rope with us on this random mission.
"I'm going to the floor below and I'll pull you up through the window. Wait here!" He's gone quicker than I can say "No promises!"
Thoughts like This is the end and My life is in the hands of Jonas flood my mind. Could these be my final thoughts?
"I wish you could be a little more positive when dangling from a window." Jonas' hand is inches above my head. As I reach up to meet his hand, I'm smacked against the brick wall by a random force. The brick indents my forehead and I gasp as my stomach slaps the wall. Jonas suddenly grabs underneath my arms and pulls me up through the window sill.
"Della are you okay?!" Jonas appears directly in front of my face, crouched down on his knees.
A shadow cascades upon us from the window opening. My heart skips a beat as we turn our heads to find none other than Shadow Solider. Though, all we see is an eery outline of an infamous super villain.
"You're in..." He flashes a smile before becoming visible in the fluorescent light of the office room. "My town." He lashes out towards us and I coward in the corner.
"Stop! You're just a shadow! You can't do anything to us, you coward! All you do is haunt people from dark corners!" Jonas is standing, unprotected, and fearless against a notorious evil creep.
What's the matter with him??
I've said it once, I've said it twice, and I'll probably say it a thousand more times. Jonas is the hero. I'm cowering in the background.
"Explain to me why you're the one standing up to me?" Shadow Solider asks, confused. I'm just as bewildered that Jonas would speak up like this. Sure, he talks all the time in class, but never have I seen Jonas like this. Shadow Soldier looks behind Jonas to scowl at me.
"Because Rapid Glare is getting a grasp on her new powers to eliminate all of you." Jonas has his back to me, but I can hear the terrifying assertiveness in his voice.
Shadow Soldier begins to levitate towards me, a vision that will most likely haunt my dreams. My lip starts to quiver but I think it's due to my new powers still settling in. At least, that's what I'm blaming it on.
"You mean, little Rapid Glare doesn't want to fight right now?" His finger brushes against my chin, slowly clawing me. I let out a whimper.
"Well, I can't kill you. Special orders from the boss. He wants to take care of you himself." Shadow Soldier smirks just to terrify me. Then he's gone.
Jonas rushes to my side in an instant, rubbing my back and wiping away the blood shed from the cut with a tissue from one of the desks. My stomach still stings from the impact of the wall. He runs his thumb over my forehead, making me cringe at the touch.
"You really don't like me showing you sympathy, do you?" Though, he keeps wiping away the blood.
My eyebrows furrow, "What? That's-"
Jonas laughs and points to his head, "Mind reader, remember?"
I shrink against the white sheetrock wall. What does he know?
"You don't like me showing you pity because you don't like to feel weak."
I blink before quickly replying, "I just, I'm not a baby, you know." I shrug off his hands to prove my point.
"Right. It has nothing to do with the fact you don't want to fall for me."
I could've coughed my lungs out.
"What?!?" I exclaim.
Jonas remains with his back pressed against the wall, one knee up and his arm draped over it. The definition of nonchalant.
He squints, "Oh, please, don't deny it." Jonas waits for my reply and busts out laughing as my mouth remains gaping open.
"Jonas Coleman! Shut up!" I attempt to push him away, laughing as he doesn't budge.
He dabs at my chin again, making the scene a little more serious. I still can't believe he has such a huge ego.
"Heard that." He says aloud.
I allow him to continue to wipe at the wound, rolling my eyes. "You were meant to." I tease.
He pauses for a brief second, then shakes his head with a smile.
"You've got it bad, Della." He stands up, holding out his hand for me to grab. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the talks and touching, but I'm in no mood to argue. He knows I don't like him like that.
Jonas scoops me up in his arms, just like after the hospital incident. I'd protest, but I can't move a limb. If I fell asleep in this moment, I wouldn't be surprised. I just hope I won't drool on Jonas' shirt.
"How do you plan on getting me back home? I can't even breathe without pain seizing my chest." I ask. Certainly I cannot run us back.
He looks straight ahead when replying, "We're not going back home. I spotted where Red Raven's hideout is."
