Chapter 13 -- Bigger fish to fry
"Get her some blankets!" Jonas calls out to Ash. They both rush around Jonas' house, trying to help me in any way. My body temperature is going down hill.
Jonas calls my parents as soon as he crosses the threshold. How he'll explain all of this, I have no idea. I hope my identity isn't revealed in the process, but I don't know how else they'll understand.
"How are you, Del?" Ash spreads a few blankets on top of my shivering body. I bite my lip, trying to keep my teeth from chattering.
"G-g-great." I sound like an infant trying my best to stutter out my first word. She smiles a bittersweet smile.
"You're going to be fine. Jonas will know what to do." She takes a seat next to me in an attempt to comfort me. Ash and I have never been the touchy-feeling, emotional best friends. We usually pat each other on the head when one of us is upset.
"Jonas? Taking care of something?" I bust out laughing, but with my lip quivering it sounds like I'm dying.
She chuckles, "He cares about you, so he won't give up. He's going to figure out what this is." She gestures to my whole demeanor.
"You're giving him a lot of credit." I state blankly. They've never gotten along, so I'm surprised to hear her take his side.
She shrugs, "He deserves it. You know, he never left your side in the hospital until you woke up and took a shower. He's beating himself up for leaving you alone when Red Raven came in."
I stare at her. Jonas was my best friend, but he wasn't that sentimental. Surely she's exaggerating. He didn't stay by me the whole time.
"He couldn't help that. No one has control of themself when Red Raven is around."
Ash replies with a quirk of an eyebrow. "Well Jonas can't control himself around you. Perhaps that's why he needed some fresh air and 'came looking for me'." She scoffs after using air quotes.
My eyebrows furrow in confusion. "Ash, quit already. Jonas and I don't like each other."
A gleam in her eyes tells me she doesn't believe that. "Well, you'll come around. As for Jonas, I hear wedding bells."
I push her off the couch, laughing hysterically at her accusations. She can be terribly delusional. Ash starts to cackle from the floor.
Jonas walks in the room just in time to see us goofing off. Typically he'd look at us strangely, but all he does is get down to business.
"I told your parents." He faces me directly, but there's sorrow in his voice.
My eyes wander to the floor, "So they know I'm Rapid Glare?" When I look back up, I find his face has gone from sulking to a form of gratitude.
He smirks, "They know I'm her sidekick. I told them Red Raven was after you in the hospital and I had to get you out. Your secret is still safe."
He crosses his arms proudly. In an attempt to smile, I fail. They need to know. They're my parents.
"Geez, woman, make up your mind!" Jonas groans, obviously having read my thoughts. His arms flail over his head. I rub my temple, exhausted with his outbursts. There's been too much yelling today.
"We need to talk all of this out. Maybe this is a new power you developed." Ash finally pulls herself up from the red wine colored carpet.
"A new power?" I question. She nods in excitement. What's it like to be a normal person when your two best friends are super freaks?
Jonas rubs the stubble on his chin. He claims he's trying to grow it out but it's been the same length for over a month now. He snaps his fingers together in conclusion.
"Yeah, maybe something the hospital gave you triggered new powers." He offers.
"How on earth would I suddenly get new powers in the hospital?" All I managed to do was take a long nap, shower, and get my life threatened. When did I develop a new ability?
"Maybe Red Raven gave it to you." Ash mutters. Jonas and I snap our necks to look at her.
"Why would he do that? How would he do that?" I'm baffled by her proposition.
"I don't know, people! I'm just retracing your steps! Perhaps you had an allergic reaction! What do I know?!" Ash folds her arms over her chest in defeat. Her face contorts into a scowl.
Jonas eyes Ash, just as worried as I am about her current state of mind. He sits next to me on the couch. I try my best not to stiffen.
"Well, maybe it was an allergic reaction. Maybe something in the IV triggered a genetic coding for a new super ability. The conundrum is trying to figure out what drug they induced you with."
Ash and I blink.
"You used big words." Ash says in a dumbed-down voice. I snort in response and we watch Jonas become annoyed.
"Y'all are just hilarious, aren't you?" He mocks with his hands on his hips.
Ash and I resume a correct posture and try our best to contemplate his ideas. An ordinary drug used at the hospital on a daily basis triggered new super powers?
This day kept getting more strange.
"Okay...sure... We'll go with this theory. S-s-so," I stutter out the sentence, "How should I test this new power?"
Jonas rubs his chin in thought. "What did you do to test your other powers?"
Ash looks to me, in hopes of getting an awesome story, I assume.
"I precisely remember running the mile in P.E in two minutes. That's when I realized something was off."
"I bet the teachers did too." Jonas comments, biting his thumb absentmindedly.
I scowl, "So I'm not the most athletic person! Two minutes when an average athelte takes at least six is pretty impressive. Is was enough for me to keep pushing myself."
Jonas sighs, fed up. Clearly he should've gotten this new power.
"So, what should we do to get these powers to work?" Ash slowly asks. Jonas is practically scowling at me.
"I guess we'll just see what happens. Right now I have to explain white hair to my parents." I don't think they'd buy my story of school being so stressful I aged early.
Standing up, my head swirls, making my vision blurry. Jonas quickly grabs my hand and waist to sit me back down. Why is he so concerned about me? I'm not dying.
Am I?
"Ash," Jonas stops looking at me to face Ash.
"Will you go find some more blankets in the closet upstairs?"
She nods and jogs up the steps, taking two at a time. Jonas grabs my hand and holds it in his. What is he doing?
"You're still cold as ice, Del. You shouldn't go home until you get a hold on your powers." His eyes look into mine with the most concern I've ever seen. More concern than my mom showed in the hospital. That's saying something.
He clears his throat and scratches the back of his head. "So I really recommend us testing this out first, okay?" He looks a little sheepish.
"I don't want to test out my new power, and I don't want to go home. There's no way I'm staying here, either, because there are 10 more villains on the loose. Jonas, there are bigger fish to fry at the moment." My teeth clench not because I'm angry but because I'm trying to keep my voice steady.
Jonas purses his lips. He knows I'll have my way. I've been locked inside a hospital room for two days, I need some fresh air.
"Alright... But one wrong move and I'm taking you home."
"Home?" I ponder.
He nods curtly, "Yes, because maybe they'll be able to handle your mischief better than me." Jonas begins to grab my hands and pull me up.
I feel nauseous.
All of a sudden my phone rings in my pocket. When did that get there? It wasn't anywhere in sight in my hospital room.
Jonas watches me struggle to pull it out of my sweatpants pocket. Ash comes barreling down the steps, bringing a couple hoodies instead of blankets like Jonas asked.
"Hello?" I catch it on the last ring.
"Della! Oh my gosh! What happened? I didn't know why you were ignoring my texts until I just heard you were in the hospital!"
"I-I'm f-f-f-fine." I can hear my teeth chattering.
"Should I come see you at home?" Mickey asks. I stop in my tracks (not that I was making any progress getting out the door).
"I'm still recovering. I'll see you tomorrow." He can't see me like this. He'll scold me for being a hero again.
"Okay. Um... I actually need to talk to you about something." My feet start to take tiny, shuffling steps to the door with the help of Jonas.
"Oh? About what?" I ask. Ash and Jonas both gawk at me.
"I-I'll just, um leave you to get better. Uh, bye Del." He hangs up the phone after a few mumbled worlds.
"Who was that?" Ash asks with her hands on her hips. If she held a dish rag in her hand the resemblance between my mother and her would be uncanny.
"The president." I joke. Jonas rolls his eyes.
"Was it Mickey?" Ash continues her stance. Jonas watches me intently. Even a mind reader knew less than my best friend.
"Yes." I sigh. A collective silence bottles up. They know I don't trust Mickey these days.
"What did he want?" Jonas asks next.
"I think to break up with me." I admit.
Jonas finally leads me out the door as I start to clam up. Even if things are crazy between Mickey and me, I'm still upset. Things can't end this way.
Suddenly I feel terribly distraught. My temperature drops drastically and I begin to sniffle. Jonas looks over at me while propping me up.
Snow begins to fall overhead. Just on us. I wipe my nose on my sleeve as I smile sheepishly.
"I know what my power is now."
