Chapter 12 -- A terrible tag team

It wasn't easy trying to calm Ash and Jonas down. They watched Red Raven walk into the room but couldn't do anything about it. They vowed that as long as I was in this hospital they would stay by my side.

"Guys, really, it isn't necessary." I assured them, slowly sitting up in bed.

Jonas sat on the edge again. "It's okay, Del. We're here and we're not going to let anything happen."

"Neither is he." I mutter.

Ash leans in close, "Come again?"

I huff and pull the blanket to my chin, "Nothing. Forget I said --"

"Tell me everything. Right. Now." Ash demands.

Taking a big breath, I recall every detail of his surprise visit.

Even the part about me accusing him of being my boyfriend.

"I knew it." Jonas announces.

Ash and I both roll our eyes, but there was truth to my accusation. The part that didn't make sense? Why Mickey told me to make sure Red Raven was locked up for good. Also, the part where we're pretty sure there's two Red Ravens. This was all becoming a jumbled puzzle.

It brings me to ask Ash, "Do you have your laptop around?"

She walks around the hospital bed and brings it up from the floor. "Always," she states, "Why though?"

Ash and Jonas are both sitting on my bed now, and I don't think that it was intended to hold this much weight. Nonetheless, I beg her to bring up the location of the two different chips.

"Well?" I become impatient as she types away. She sighs at my outburst, her fingers coming to a halt.

"One is still at Sophia's house. The other is not showing up."

Jonas peeks over her shoulder as I bolt upright.

"What do you mean? Did he take it off somehow?" Jonas and I take turns asking the questions.

"I doubt it. If one of them wasn't smart enough to take it off, then the other probably didn't think to remove his own."

"Ash." I close my eyes in realization.

"Yes?" She replies.

"One of them is a super genius. He has eyes in the back of his head. Do you really think he wouldn't realize he wasn't being tracked?"

Her lips purse together, "Well, then why wasn't the other informed to do the same?"

"Because he doesn't have powers." Jonas mumbles.

Ash is bewildered without a doubt, but I know Jonas only knows what I'm talking about because he can read my mind.

"What does that mean? If they're working together, the one with powers should have told the other that he was being tracked." Ash's brain is fried by the look on her face.

"Exactly!" I exclaim, "The one with powers doesn't care if the other is tracked down!"

Jonas and Ash both stare at me, waiting for a better explanation. I'm not sure I can give a logical hypothesis. Here goes nothing.

"My theory? The one with powers doesn't want to be a villain, or, atleast, doesn't want to be involved with the other who doesn't have powers. Why would you want to tag team with a guy who can't do what you do?"

"So you think... Red Raven is against... himself?" Ash slowly lets the words spill out of her mouth.

Jonas nods in agreement. Sometimes it's nice that a guy can read my mind. Usually they're incompetent and you have to tell them what's on your mind if you want them to do anything about it.

"I think it's all we have to go on. Two Red Ravens, one doesn't have powers." I reply shortly.

She rubs her temples and closes her laptop. Just in time, because my parents come in with the nurse to release me. Freedom.

"Sweetie, get your stuff together." Mom greets with a smile.

I glance down at my forearm, "Well, I would, except, I'm attached to this life support thing."

Mom frowns at me from the doorway, "Don't be so dramatic, Della. It's just a stabilizing drug."

The nurse walks over to detatch the needle from my veins. The fluid begins to run backwards through the tube. It feels as if I'm being drained.

Jonas and Ash get on either side of me and allow me to use them as crutches. If this doesn't make me feel like a weakling, I don't know what can make me feel more pathetic. Why didn't Jonas get hurt like I did? Red Raven was controlling him too.

We begin to take small steps out of the room. I refused a wheelchair, but I was honestly regretting my decision. The floor was starting to spin below me. I felt Ash struggling to hold me upright.

"Hey, Ash, I think I can take it from here." I hear Jonas from my left ear. Ash's presence is no longer beside me, instead in front of me, walking backwards. When I'm about to ask why she stopped assisting my walk down the steps, I'm scooped up, staring at the ceiling.

"Whoa. What just happened?" I ask, feeling a little loopy. I'm not sure it was just 'stabilizing' drugs in that IV.

Jonas snickers, "Relax, I've got you." He whispers in my ear. Why did he have to pick me up right at the stairs, though? Why weren't we on an elevator?

"Della, you can calm down, I won't drop you." Jonas' arms feel odd underneath my legs, against the back of my knees. My left arm wraps around his neck as the right dangles. Mom, dad, and Ash keep a close eye on the two of us to make sure he doesn't drop me.

The ceiling tile is dotted with tiny specks. I'm suddenly mesmerized with counting them. Jonas' thumb brushes against my arm. Whether his touch was intentional or not, I shudder.

"Are you cold?" He asks in disbelief.

"Freezing. Aren't you?" Perhaps it wasn't his thumb brushed against my arm that gave me chills.

I'm not able to look at his face, but I watch Ash tense up at my words. Jonas' grip tightens. My parents walk ahead of us, oblivious to whatever Ash and Jonas are witnessing. What exactly are they witnessing?

Ash runs up to us, eyes wide in horror. All of a sudden I'm on my own two feet, wobbling around while they bicker. This would be easier to understand if I didn't have drugs coursing through me.

Quickly they usher me out a side door of the hospital. Wait a second. Where are my parents? Don't I have some papers to sign to legally be out of this place?

Ash hisses towards Jonas as he flails his arms in annoyance. As for what they're arguing about, I'm clueless. My body starts to drop like a rock.

"Grab her, idiot! She's going down!" Ash screams at Jonas. He rushes over to my side, just in time to catch me. The cement underneath my feet would have surely scraped me up in some way, but I don't think it would've been serious. Jonas didn't need to dive in like that.

"Ash, go get my truck and bring it to the front loop!" Jonas reaches into his pocket to grab his keys and chucks them towards Ash. Her blue eyes reveal a panic I've never seen in them before. She sprints towards the parking deck, leaving me behind with Jonas.

Jonas' hands cup my face, searching frantically for I don't know what. This ordeal would concern me more if I were fully conscious. His brown eyes look sad, angry, and frantic all in the same glance.

"Della, it's gonna be alright. You're gonna be okay."

"What? Jonas I don't understand--" He picks me up and rushes to the front entrance of the hospital. In an attempt to scan the premises for my parents, I cause an outburst from Jonas.

"Della, don't pull against me! We need to move!" His booming voice startles me and I shrink against his chest. It's hard to hide from the guy who's carrying you around.

Ash pulls up right in the nick of time. Jonas tosses me in the middle seat of the truck, sliding in after me. He motions for Ash to step on the gas. We take off in a jerk.

"Her hair is white as snow, Jonas, do something!" Ash demands of Jonas. I look between the two of them, finally comprehending why they were giving me strange looks.

"We need to get to my place, asap! We'll call her parents when we get there!" He stares at the road the whole time.

"No, Jonas, you call them now! I don't care what you tell them but they need to know where she went at least! This is serious!" Ash races down the highway. It's a wonder we haven't been pulled over.

I perk up, "Just how serious?" They both look at me, realizing for the first time I can hear everything they're saying.

"Your hair is white. You're freezing," Ash begins.

"Oh no, don't tell me my heart's been frozen by my psychotic sister." I roll my eyes, joking at the situation.

Jonas turns to grip my shoulders, "This isn't a joke, Della. This can't be normal." He wants me to tell him it's perfectly reasonable for my hair to turn white. When I look in the rearview mirror, I jump in shock.

Twirling the white strands between my fingers, I look up to face him, "What's happening to me?"
