Bad Luck
Our bus pulled up to the front of the school, where we waited to be released to the drama-filled, work-oriented building that we call school. One of my good friends, Sophia, shared a bus route with me. We usually sat together, that is, until she made a new friend.
Her name is Trixie, and honestly, I'm not sure if I like her too much.
"She's very loud and.. A little too cheerful. I wonder what goes on inside her mind. Perhaps, she's just as crazy on the inside as she is on the outside."
I would've thought to myself.
The bell finally rung and we were released from our busses. I ran into the school, in hopes of not being trampled again, like I usually did. I would always tell myself things would get better. But this was not the case. As this is currently my past, I know now that things did not exactly get better.
"Hey, Hugo!" Trixie ran up to me.
I sighed. Trixie's energy was a little too much for me, and she's always extra-crazy around me.
"Sup." I shrugged.
"So, how are you on this lovely morning?" She gleamed.
"Fine." I had answered, attempting to end the small talk. If you know me, I'm horrible at small talk.
"Tsk, it's getting colder now that a snowstorm is due for tomorrow, don't you think?" She huffed.
"I suppose. The weather isn't really effecting me that much." I scoffed.
"Oh. Is that so?... Well, you'll be happy to know that school is going to be canceled tomorrow!"
"How can you be so sure?" I paused. The school board hadn't even called in yet. There was no sign of snow, since it just rained yesterday.
"Just a hunch!" She giggled.
I rolled my eyes slightly, and trudged to my locker down the over-crowded chaotic hallway. I pushed through some other inklings to get into my own space, but of course, nobody was listening to me. I waited for a moment until I could finally enter my combination. My locker swung open, and I threw off my backpack. Taking a few books out, I noticed at the corner of my eye, a few inklings were staring at me and giggling. I gave a small glare, assuming they were just gossiping again.
But boy, was I wrong.
It wasn't until I had finally finished putting things into my locker. I looked down at my shirt, covered in my dark blue ink. I gasped, confused as to why that was even there in the first place. I slammed my locker shut and ran into the boy's bathroom. I attempted to scrub the ink off, but it was no use.
"How in the world did my ink even get there?!" I grumbled. "My Splattershot must've been leaking when I picked it up earlier.. Probably broke last week during the turf war." I thought outloud and threw the paper towels away. "Tsk. Maybe I can ask to borrow a jacket from Kyoshi." A few minutes later, after the warning bell rang, I went up to Kyoshi's desk to ask for a hoodie or jacket.
"I'm sorry, Hugo. I didn't bring another jacket with me today. Tough luck, bro." He shrugged.
"Nah, that's alright. Thanks anyway..." I mumbled. Scooting back to my desk after being told to sit down, I looked over to the window on my right. Cars flew past each other down the road, and the dead leaves of the trees flew around in the crisp wind of winter.
It was relaxing, until a purple gooey blob suddenly flew into the window. I flinched back and the teacher turned his head to me, as if he was expecting an explanation.
"Hugo, do you mind explaining why a purple blob was shot at the window just now?" He walked over to my desk, his shadow towering over me.
"I don't know sir, honest." I placed my hand to my heart. He shook his head while grumbling something and walked away. I sighed and looked back out the window, where I suddenly spotted an Octoling behind a slim tree. I gasped, and shut my mouth quickly, hoping I didn't draw too much attention to myself. The Octoling kept shouting at me, and I tried to ignore her until the teacher confronted me about it again.
"Listen, Hugo. I understand you have friends that enjoy your company.." He paused.
A few inklings giggled, as if what he said was a joke.
"But I'd greatly appreciate if you make sure they do not disturb my class again, please." He grunted and closed the blinds next to me. "Do not open those blinds, or you will be moved, young inkling." He scoffed once more before returning to the front of the class. I gave a deep sigh.
"At least things got a little interesting for once." I mumbled.
After first period ended, I was heading to Math with Sophia, Kyoshi and a few other inklings I knew. Since I'm only 14, I'm still just a freshman. Nothing more, nothing less. I'm basically the "quiet kid" in each class. However, they are very wrong in some cases.
After all,
Sometimes silence is the loudest scream.
