Chapter three: The boy who played with fire
The rest of my first day was pretty good. My teachers are okay and I'm actually enjoying AP English.
The next day however was not so good. I was sitting in English listening to my teacher talk about the Edgar Allen Poe poem ' The Raven' when I was called down to the office. I stood up from my chair and began walking to the principals office. I could feel my classmates eyes on me as I exited the classroom.
Once I arrived at the principals office I was greeted with the face of a man dressed in a black suit with an unpleasant look on his face." Hello are you Anna Carson?" The man asked his expression not changing." Yes" I replied in a unsure voice. " Will you please come with me for a moment?" Asked the man motioning to the empty room next to the secretary's desk." Sure" I said.
Once we were in there than man shut the door and told me to take a seat." I'm sorry to have to pull you out of English class, English was always one of my favourite subjects." Said the man and for a moment I thought I saw him smile but he quickly returned to his previous expression as if snapping out of a daydream." I'm detective Ford" the man said " I specialize in murder cases." Just then I felt I big pit beginning to pool in my stomach." I'm here to investigate the murder of Kris Andrew."
I felt like I was going to be sick." What?" I sputtered barley able to get the word out." Last night a young man by the name of Kris Andrew burned to death. He was thrown in a fire and according to security you were the last person to see him." Stated detective Ford. " But that's not possible!" I shrieked." The only time I ever talked to Kris was yesterday morning, he must have been seen during the day. You know at his classes and stuff." Detective Ford just stared." Miss Carson " he began." Kris ditched school Yesterday after first period to take care of some stuff, we don't know what but whatever it was it must have been important because according to his permanent record Kris never ditched school." " You said that you were talking first period. What were you talking about?" Asked detective Ford. " we were talking about the book I was reading " I responded. " what book?" Pushed detective Ford " The girl who played with fire." Detective Ford stared at me with wide eyes. I didn't know what else to say so I said the first thing that came to mind." Do you think I killed Kris?!" I blurted."I'm not sure what I think right now to be honest ." Admitted detective Ford. " I think it's best if you go home right know take the rest of the day off, this is a lot to take in." " No!" I objected. " I want to stay here." Detective Ford looked surprised." As you wish, just don't tell any of your classmates about Kris. With the exception of Kris's family no one else knows about his sudden death and I would greatly appreciate it if you keep it quiet." " Don't worry I won't say a word." I promised detective Ford. Detective Ford looked as if he was going to say something but was cut off by the loud sound of the bell signalling the time to switch classes. Without another word a grabbed my stuff and ran out of the room. I don't think I could've handled another one of detective fords judgemental questions. I just had to get out of there.
