Chapter 6
When I wake, the sun is already high in the sky. I look at the alarm clock on my bedside table. It reads, 9:00. I get up and walk into my wardrobe, picking an apricot dress with a yellow frilly lining and simple yellow sandals to match. I put on the locket from yesterday and some gold heart studs and then I go downstairs.
Bonnie and twill are yalready down there eating breakfast. The smell of something delicious wafts around the kitchen.
"Good morning! How did you sleep?" Twill asks as I walk out of the elevator.
"Really well, actually. What's that smell?"
"Fresh pancakes, out of the pan." Bonnie replies
"Mmm! Can I have some?"
"Of course!"
Twill serves me up a stack of 5 pancakes and I go and sit down next to Bonnie on the dining table.
"How did you make them?" I ask, in between mouthfuls.
"Twill found some flour in the cupboard and I was going for a delightful morning stroll around the gardens when I found a hen coop, filled with chickens laying eggs. So I brought them up and she decided to make pancakes, something her mother taught her to do on special occasions."
"Well, thank you Twill. They're delicious!"
I finish my plate off and take it over and put it in the dishwasher.
"What's that?" Bonnie asks.
"A dishwasher. You put dirty plates an things in, and they come out clean."
"Cool."
I take everyone else's plates and put them in and then I follow the instructions Coin gave me to turn it on. It whirs into action, lights flashing.
"So what's the plan for the day?" Bonnie asks.
"Let's show Twill the pond! We can bring our swimmers and have a dip because it looks like a hot day."
"Oh, yes! Just one problem."
"What?"
"We don't have swimmers."
I think about it for a minute then say,
"I'm sure I saw a giant collection of them in my wardrobe. Let me check!"
We go up to my room and I walk into my wardrobe and look around. I spot the larger clothes and pick up a few more outfits for Bonnie and Twill and then I spot the swimmers. There are bikini's, singlets and skirts, and any kind of other you could want, reaching all the way up to the largest size there is. I choose a sky blue one and I grab a bikini in Bonnie's size and a green swimsuit in Twill's. I give them to Bonnie and twill and then go get dressed myself. In a few minutes we are all dressed, and Me and Bonnie go downstairs where twill is packing a few bottles of water, a pack of apricots and some sun cream in a bag.
"Oh, girls! Wear something over the top of them or else you are going to get sunburnt while we're walking!"
So we go upstairs and I give Bonnie a short yellow sundress and get myself a pale pink one. Then we go back downstairs and tell twill we're ready.
"I just need to find a weapon so I can go hunting while we're out. We're nearly out of dried fruit."
My heart twists. Just like Katniss.
Bonnie seems to read my mind and she squeezes my hand.
"Ok. I think there is an archery course so bows should be in the shed there." I say.
I lead her out to the shed and sure enough, about twelve different sized bows and the same amount of quivers of arrows are there. Twill takes a bow and then selects a quiver of arrows and we head off towards the forcefield. We go in the same direction as yesterday and soon enough, we come to the field. I start to worry whether Twill can get over it with her weapons and her bag for the picnic but she gets over easily enough. Bonnie and I go next and we are on the other side in no time.
"Hey, you never told me about the second games that Katniss and Peter went in. How did they both survive?"
I sigh.
"Tell you there."
"Fine."
Twill pulls out her bow and arrows but can't shoot anything because we're making too much noise, joking and laughing with each other. Soon enough, we get to the pond. Twill sets out our picnic and we take off our dresses, already ready to get in the cool refreshing water.
"Can we have a dip, Twill?" Bonnie asks.
She waves us away so Bonnie takes it as a yes and cannonballs in, making a big splash that nearly wets the food.
"Watch it girls!"
"Sorry!" She says.
Next it's my turn and I pencil dive in, so I don't make a large splash. Me and Bonnie have a water fight (Bonnie wins) and then we race (I win) and then Twill says she's going hunting and will be back for lunch, so we climb onto the banks and lie in the primroses with our feet still dangling in the cool water.
"So, what happened? How did they get out?" Bonnie asks, rolling over to look at me.
I tell her about Peeta proposing to Katniss on the victory tour and then how the Capitol announced the quarter quell was for the existing victors and then how Peeta volunteered for Hamish and then how he said Katniss was pregnant.
"Katniss was pregnant?"
"No, he just said it for more sponsors, like how he declared his love for her in the first games."
"Oh. Ok, go on."
I tell her about how they teamed up with Finnick and mags and Beetee and Wiress. I tell her how Peeta almost died running into the forcefield but Finnick saved him and then how they figured out the clock and how Katniss had been in the jabberjay section and had heard me calling, then how they had started to take Beetee's wire and then the careers ambushed them and Katniss had gotten back up and plunged the arrow into the forcefield causing the arena to practically blow up and then how Hamitch had rescued her and Finnick but Peeta had been taken by the Capitol. I stopped for a breath, then continued.
I tell her about how a few people had followed gale back to thirteen before the Capitol blew up twelve.
"The Capitol blew up twelve!?"
I nod then continue.
I tell her about how Katniss had disagreed about being the mockingjay and then how Peeta had called ceasefire and Katniss, finally agreed. I tell her how they had rescued Peeta and he was crazy, because they had manipulated his brain with tracker jacker venom. I told her how Katniss had gone to the Capitol and had gone undercover and then how I had seen her just before the bomb and I had then been taken by Coin to here.
"Well, that's a lot for my brain to take in."
"Yeah."
We lie in silence for a while, staring at the sun, when suddenly a crash in the bushes behind us indicates Twills return. We turn.
"Catch anything?" Bonnie asks as she sits down.
"Not much. It's in the bag."
I go over and look into the bag.
"Not much! You caught three rabbits, two birds and a squirrell! That isn't 'not much'. That's 'much'. 'Very much'."
Twill blushes.
"Well, one is for lunch. I skinned one of the rabbits so we just need to build a fire to cook it."
"I'll do it!" Bonnie shouts.
She collects some wood and then heaps it in a pile and lights it using a match Twill hands her. She takes the rabbit and cleans it in the water then she places it above the embers to cook.
"So, what've you girls been doing while I was out?"
"Swimming. And talking. Swimming and talking." I say.
"Talking about what?" She asks.
"Prim was just telling me about Katniss's second games." Bonnie replies.
"Second games?"
"Yep. Katniss went in a second games." I say, "Do you want me to tell you about it?" I ask, getting ready for another lengthy explanation.
"Nah, later. Right now it's lunch time." She strolls over and takes the rabbit off the dying fire and brings it over, tearing it into small parts for each of us. We dig in, me eating so quickly, Twill has to tell me to slow down at least 6 times. We eat the apricots and sip at water. As we're finishing off, Twill says she has a special surprise. She pulls out a box and sits it by the fire to heat up.
"What is it?" I ask.
"You'll see."
We wait until she says its ready then Twill pulls them out and pulls another small container out of her bag.
"I found these when I was hunting and decided it would go nice with the pancakes we ha this morning so I took a slight detour on my way back here to get them and some plates." She opens the container she had put on the fire and the smell of smoky pancakes drifts out. She gives us each one on a plastic plate and then she pulls open the other container.
Inside is a bunch of wild raspberries. She puts a few on our plates and we eat up.
"Mmm! This is delicious! Where did you find them?" I ask.
"A little ways from the forcefield there is a 4 whole bushes full of them."
"Cool!"
"I collected a few, and marked a trail to them from the house so if we want any more we can find them easily."
"Great. It'll be good to eat something other than dried fruit for a change." Bonnie says, looking around at the meat and the berries.
I nod in agreement.
A crash in the bushes behind us makes my head whip around. A fox screams through the clearing and runs into the water at full pace. It whines and swims to the side and scrambles up and runs into the buses on the other side.
"I wonder what had him scared?" I say.
"Uh, guys." Bonnie says scaredly. We turn and look at her.
"Maybe that?" She says, pointing a shaky finger at the bushes behind us.
I turn, confused, and look at where she's pointing. I gasp and have to bite my lip to stop myself screaming.
In the bushes are two yellow glowing eyes, in the head of a way-larger-than-normal tiger.
