Chapter 32
Time is precious. Mere days can seem like years. The few precious moments you spend with someone mean the world. So use time wisely.
~
Her shirt is already bloodstained when I reach her. I lay her down, just as Katniss had to Rue in the 74th games. Her clear necklace glows so brightly around her neck. She looks up at me with pained eyes.
"Prim?" She asks. I nod.
"Am I going to die?" She asks. She looks down at the arrow in her chest and tears fall down my face.
"Please don't." I ask, as if it were a question.
She smiles lightly.
"If I do, will you make sure my family know that I died happily?"
"And why are you happy?" I ask, my throat choking up.
"Because my last few moments were with you."
Her body goes slack and she closes her eyes.
"Please don't leave me, Daisy. Please." I sob.
Juliet takes her from my arms and suddenly Bonnie is behind me, and I wrap myself in her arms.
"Her heart hasn't stopped beating yet. She's not gone yet." Juliet says, so I kneel down beside her.
"Please, Daisy. Come back, for just a second." I stumble.
She lets out a strained breath and opens her eyes a small fraction.
"Rue?" She asks.
"No, it's Prim."
"Oh, Prim. What's wrong? I feel funny." She says.
"Nothing, you just got a little hurt." I say. "Listen, you need to know that I love you. I always will, no matter where or how you are. Remember that?"
She nods, and her eyes close once more. I sob into her faintly beating chest. I pull out the arrow sitting in her chest and suddenly, Juliet's necklace glows. Some of the water on my Chain floats into the air, and glows green, like her necklace. Suddenly a thought occurs to me. Some last shred if hope lifts the water up and into Daisy's wound. With a bright flash, we all blink and look away. The light fades and I look down at her body. The wound is replaced by a small scar. I reach my ear down to her chest and her faint heartbeat is getting stronger.
Suddenly, her eyes flutter open and she sits up suddenly, completely forgetting that there had ever been an arrow in her chest. She looks around at us and her eyes grow wide.
"Where's Summer." She simply says.
We all look about and she is right. Summer wasn't here. A shout comes from the trees and I jump up and run into them. Bonnie, Daisy and Juliet follow. We run a little way, the person a little way ahead in the bushes. They have a figure slung over their shoulder that could only be Summer.
We run far, trying desperately to catch up to the person. Suddenly, he disappears and we pop out in a clearing, with a dirt floor and an array of knives, daggers and swords surrounding it on the ground. Percy is half unconscious, tied to a tree on our left, and Soren is the same on our right. The figure is holding Summer in front of us, and quickly ties he to a third tree. He ties a knot and shoves a piece of cloth into her mouth, then turns.
We are staring into the eyes of the boy I had completely forgotten about. A boy with shaggy black hair and a skinny, scraggly figure. He has a bow strung over his shoulder, most likely the bow that almost killed Daisy. The boy from 10.
He has a lion necklace around his neck, with shimmering ruby eyes. He smiles evilly when he sees me and Juliet.
"Hello girls. Meet the third and final necklace. It's powers? Winning the 76th hunger games."
The weapons surrounding the clearing fly up, leaving us trapped.
"Do you like my party? It's quite nice, isn't it?" He says, looking around the clearing at the floating weapons. "Well, we better make sure the party guests don't leave."
Suddenly, I feel myself being lifted off the ground and thrown against one of the free trees. I try to move but I am pinned there by some invisible force. A nearby piece of rope wraps itself around me, then ties itself tightly. The force is dropped but I am now held against the tree from the ropes. Bonnie goes flying through the air next. She gets held against a tree as invisible hands tie ropes around her. Then Juliet does the same thing. Lastly, comes Daisy. For a girl that had been shot in the chest with an arrow twenty minutes ago, she looks fairly well. The invisible force slams her against one of the free trees and ties tight ropes around her as well. The boy from 10 smiles and claps his hands. He looks around at all of us, struggling against the ropes. He walks up to daisy and examines her clear necklace.
"A gift from her, I suppose." He says, spinning it in his fingers.
"Don't touch it." Daisy growls. He frowns.
"No, I think I will take it. It'll be worth something when I get out of this arena." He pulls it off Daisy's neck and as soon as it leaves her skin and touches his, it splashes all over him. He curses and tries to dry himself. I look at some of the access water and pull it discreetly to my necklace.
He looks up at Daisy and growls.
"Never mind. I can always make another." He turns and walks over to Juliet, examining her necklace.
"So, healing powers? That can't be the only power."
Juliet shrugs.
"I didn't have the chance to find out before you tied us up."
"Well, mine has two that I know of. Leviathan and...."
Flames roar up around our trees, licking at the ropes.
"Fire." He finishes.
The fires disappear, leaving me with stinging arms. I wanted so much to use the water to soothe them but stopped myself. I needed all I could get for my plan.
"Well, even healing is a wealthy power." He says, taking Juliet's necklace off her. She squirms and dodges, trying to avoid him, so in the end, his necklace glows and she stays still. He takes the necklace off and then moves away. She goes limp.
"What did you do to her!" I shout.
"Oh nothing, just a small after effect of too much leviathan. She goes unconscious or gets a small pain in the back of the head, depending on how much effort I put into it."
He looks over her once more and just as I predicted, turns towards me. He looks greedily down at my necklace.
"The last one." He reaches up to it and when I go to squirm away, his mysterious force pushes against me and I can't move. He reaches his hands around my neck and takes the necklace off. As soon as it leaves my skin, the sapphire turns to crystal and the water falls off it. He leaves the chain from the parachute around my neck and it surprisingly doesn't lose it's water. I imagine that water lifting into the air and it does so. I quickly put it down before the boy notices. He goes into the center of the clearing and places the necklaces around his neck. The force holding me against the tree drops again and a pain works it's way into the back of my head. It hurts so bad, I can't talk.
The boy looks around at us.
"Oh, how rude of me. My names Dian."
He searches the clearing looking at all of us, tied tight against trees.
"Now, lets get onto the party games."
The ropes around Daisy untie and her body is lifted into the air.
"Don't hurt her!" I scream. Her eyes are scared and she scans the ground below her in fear.
Dian looks over at me with a smirk.
"I don't care. I already have."
His necklace stops glowing and Daisy's tiny body falls towards the ground.
"No!" I scream.
Just before she hits the ground, she stops in mid air. For the smallest fraction of a second, I think that Dian has taken pity. Then her body rises once more, higher and higher than last time. She holds her head painfully, like she has a bad headache. She rises higher and higher still. Suddenly, the trees beside us crack and two figures fly into the clearing, a boy and a girl. The boy grabs the nearest floating sword and shields the girl from the weapons that are flung at her. They make it up to Dian in an instant and the girl rips off the three necklaces around his neck. Daisy'a tiny body falls through the sky, falling and falling.
The girl throws my necklace at me and I instantly put it on. I search the clearing for any water but the only water there is, is the stuff around my necklace. The boy looks up at the falling figure and snatches Dian's necklace off the girl. He slides it on and it glows brightly. Daisy, slowly stops falling, and the boy lets her down on the mud. He turns to the fleeing Dian and pulls him back.
"You're not going anywhere." He says.
He turns to me and the ropes untie. I run to Daisy's side and check her over for any injuries. Apart from being unconscious, she is fine. Slowly, one by one, the boy unties the bodies from the trees. The girl, Ruby I realize, sits next to Dian who has his hands tied and looks miserable.
Bonnie joins me at Daisy's side and then goes over and takes over Ruby's job, who comes over and also checks Daisy over for injuries.
"Find anything wrong?" I ask, after she is finished. She shakes her head and I breathe out in relief.
The boy, who turns out to be Tyan lays down the unconscious bodies, Summer, Percy, Juliet and Soren, next to Daisy and then starts building a fire.
He gets it going just as the sun is starting to set and we all sit around it, looking at the dancing flames. Ruby stays on the ground, tending to the unconscious an Bonnie sits down next to me. I stare at the dancing fire and remember all the times I would sit by the fireplace at home and wait for Katniss. I get an overwhelming sense of home sickness. I had completely forgotten my family because of the hunger games and all. Now that I remembered them, the ache in my heart that had been there before, returned, worse than ever. I lean my head against Bonnie and silent tears run down my face.
"Is something wrong?" She asks. I shake my head. "Nothing new." I reply.
We sit in silence and soon enough, my eyes start to droop.
"Come on. You stayed up last night and lack of sleep isn't good. It's time for you to go to sleep." Bonnie says.
"But.." I look down at the unconscious bodies.
"Don't worry, they'll be fine."
Tyan has set up a few tents and Bonnie leads me to one and throws a sleeping bag at me. I unroll it and lay it on the ground. I crawl in and Bonnie leaves. I close my eyes and a soon as I do so, I'm deep in sleep, the glow of the fire still in the back of my eyes.
