Chapter 3
I walk back up to the house, tears still silently running down my face. I go into my room and sit on my bed. I pull my knees to my chest and start sobbing. The tears I was trying to hold in come pouring out. I try to stop but the tears keep on coming. In the end I just let it go. Besides, no-ones there to see me.
That thought makes me cry even more. I was alone. For a whole week I am alone. I cry until I run out of tears.
Then I go upstairs to the entertainment room. I sit on one of the chairs with the booklet and the tv remote and manage to work out how to change it to a channel. It's one I the capitols news channels. It's showing a report of the rebellion progress.
"After that last bomb, it was only a matter of time before president snow gave in. The death toll of the bomb is still not final, however this much can be established. The mocking jay, Katniss Everdeen, is still alive, however her beloved younger sister was on the front line of the medics and is dead. Katniss is most likely going to come around in about a days time. President Snow gave in about 1/2 an hour after the last bomb. More details after these advertisements."
An ad comes on for Capitol insurance and then another for donating to the Capitol hospital and one for supporting the mocking jay rebellion.
I look away and go over to the DVD cupboard. I look at a few Capitol movies before I settle on a documentary about the old rebellion. I go to put it in but then I hear my name on the news program. I look up. The news lady is sitting there, interviewing Gale.
"So, Gale, what was it like when you first woke up after that bomb?"
"It was scary. Other injured people were in the same wing as me and one didn't have an arm. I asked about Katniss and they said she was fine, but still unconscious. Then I asked about Prim..."
"Right, Primrose Everdeen. You must have been pretty close to her, weren't you?"
"Yes. Well, closer to Katiss but Prim.. Well, she was like another sister to me. When they told me she was dead.. At first I didn't believe them. Primrose was the toughest twelve year old I knew. But then as reality dawned in me, I screamed at them. They ended up having to inject me with a drowsing serum, because I was getting dangerous."
Tears roll down my face. Here I was watching him being torn apart because I'm dead. When really, I'm not.
"Yes, we are all sad about Primroses death."
"Especially, Katniss. When I went to her room a little earlier, she was having a nightmare, about Prim. She was shouting her name."
I cry even more when he says this. I curl up onto the love seat and put my head on my knees to watch what else he says.
"Gale, do you have any words for Primrose, you would like to say today?"
"Yes, I do," he says, staring straight at the camera,"Prim, you were the kindest person I knew. You could put a smile on my face and you were like a little sister to me. I will never forget you, and Katniss definitely won't."
A buzzer goes off and the woman leads Gale off the stage and then starts talking about something else but I don't listen. I put my face in my knees and cry. Again.
This time I stop quicker. I turn the tv off and head towards the elevator. I realize I'm hungry so I go down to the kitchen. I look in a cupboard and find a packet of something called, Banana Chips. I rip them open and try one. It tastes horrible, salty yet with a rotten banana taste. Still, it's food and its all I can do not to gulf them down in two seconds flat. I try to remember the last time I ate. It's must have been a few minutes before we left to the Capitol, because Coin had come to me just as I was finishing a tiny snack. That was, about, 7 hours ago, I calculate as I look at the modern digital clock on the wall.
I take the banana chips with me back to the elevator and hit the B button. The lift jolts into action and once again I'm there in 2 seconds.
I step out of the elevator into a dark room. I use the small light from the lift to find the light switch and flick it on. Beautiful lights flicker on, with pink diamond light shades, giving the room a rosy glow.
The first thought I think as I look around the space is, its enormous! Then I see the books. Shelf upon shelf of them. Shelves spread on all the walls and there are about a million books. There are old fashioned ladders that slide across each wall that you can adjust to which shelve you want to look on. Fluffy chairs and comfortable couches litter the room as well as coffee tables and in the corner is a table with a coffee machine on it as well as a fridge. Along the wall where the escalator is, is a row of desks with laptops on them. A section of one of the shelves is full of DVDs and CDs.
I walk over to the nearest shelf and run my fingers along the spines of the books, reading the names aloud. One book catches my eye. I pull it out. The Diary of Roses, A-Z encyclopedia. A picture of a primrose is on the front. I put it back. I scan the shelf, looking for something. I decide to go up the ladder. I go to the top shelf and sitting there is a blue and green book. I pull it out.
Water plants and they're features. I flip it open and go to the K section. Katniss. The first one there. There's a picture of it flowering. I slam it shut and put it back on the shelf. I climb back down the ladder and go to a different6 shelf. Non-fiction. I pull out a book about the hunger games. I put it back. Then i put another about a mermaid in district five. I take it over to an armchair and sit down. I start reading. It is a good book, not because its interesting, but it doesn't have anything to do with the hunger games or rebellion or any of the other stuff I didn't want to think about.
I read until the clock on the wall next to the elevator reads 6:30. Then I go upstairs again and put the empty banana chip wrapper in the bin. I then grab a glass of water, and head upstairs back to my room. I follow the instructions I did on the other tv and manage to change it onto the same channel as last time. A different reporter is there, with bright blue and white hair. Bright streaks of orange go through it as well.
"Next up we are going to have and even more special guest than our last one, Gale Hawthorn. Can you guess who it is? They'll be up after this break."
Another add comes on so i look out the window. The sun is setting. I look out at it. Its beautiful, with fluffy pink clouds and orange and yellow and further up a light purple. I watch as the sun disappears behind the horizon. I turn back to the tv. The last advertisement finishes.
"Hello, and welcome back to Cap News. Right now, in the studio is a very special guest. President COIN!"
What? Coin was back already? God, that was a fast helicopter.
"So Coin, how did you take to the death of the mocking jays little sister?"
"Well, very badly. Katniss was very attached to her. In fact, we might be having a very special hunger games in Primroses honour."
"Ooh, that's interesting. Can you tell us more?"
"Unfortunately not as it is classified and may not even happen unless the mockingjay agrees."
So this is what she wanted me dead for. So that Katniss would agree to another hunger games. Then another thought occurs to me. If Katniss was so distraught over my 'death' then she would most likely not debate over the new president.
"Well, onto another subject, what was it like coming face to face with President Snow?"
"Scary. After he sent that last bomb, I knew he was a psychopath. Who would hurt innocent children for no reason? And then hurt them again so the medics were dead? No sane person would do that."
Well apparently she wasn't sane. I knew that she had sent the bombs.
"Yes, a very phycopathic person. I don't know how us Capitol people didn't see it before."
Because they were dumb an were put under the spell of it all there lives.
"Yes, quite so, but however, when I met him he had just caved in and was only just a prisoner. He was definitely phycopathic. He screamed at me and lunge for me with his bare hands. I believe he was trying to strangle me."
"Scary."
"Yes, very. But don't worry, he's safe and sound, locked in his own, high security garden."
"Garden?"
"He insisted he must be in his rosé garden when he met the mocking jay, so we thought we may as well put him in there full time."
"Any recovery of the mockingjay?"
"No, not yet."
I hated how they kept on calling Katniss 'The mockingjay', but I suppose she was. More people called her that than Katniss nowadays.
"She should be back on her feet soon and then it's only a matter of time until president snows death day."
A buzzer goes off.
"Well, thank you for your time and effort but unfortunately our time is up."
She leads coin off the stage. I turn the tv off and lie down on my bed. My head reels with unanswered questions. What was all about these new hunger games? Katniss wouldn't agree to them would she? Then again, she wasn't really in the state to argue. She thought I was dead. Everyone did. The only people who knew that I wasn't were coin and the few other people she said were gonna bring me food.
I get under the covers? and as soon as my head hits the pillow I'm fast asleep. Dreaming of both the presidents deaths...
