Chapter 27

I land hard on a cold mud floor. I sit up and look around myself. Oh. Not another dream. Nearby is Katniss, holding a bow, with her hair tied in a messy plait down her back.

"Come on prim. We need to eat tonight! Last time I take you hunting." She mutters the last part under her breath.

"I'm coming!" Says my voice from behind her. My small figure appears behind her, holding a small bow awquardly. Katniss looks about herself and spots a large crow in the trees above her. She gestures for me to remain silent, and points her arrow. At the last second, I run up to her and say, "No! Don't kill it!" Tugging at her shoulder. The bow swerves off aim and misses the crow entirely. It squawks and flys off. Katniss groans in frustration.

"Primrose!" I look awkwardly at the ground.

"I'm sorry." I say. Immediately he face softens.

"Doesn't matter. Come on, lets go get that bow."

They walk off in the direction of the wonky shot so I follow. They find the arrow and then start heading back the way they had come. Katniss picks some berries and collects some herbs.

"This will have to do us for tonight." She says, looking over the small stock they had. "Come on, we can stop by the pond and have a dip on our way back. I follow them to a small clearing with a large pool of water and the familiar tiny hut where they put down their things and dive into the water. I decide to sit on the banks and watch. They don't seem to see me, of course, seeing as its a memory.

When they climb out they sit on the banks a minute or two then get up and start walking back the way to the fence. As they walk they talk about the usual things we would have. How school was going, and I would joke about gale being Katniss's boyfriend. They were nearly to the fence when with a trill, a small Mockingjay fell from the trees, a dagger in its breast. I look around but no one is there, well, at least not that I can see. I hear Katniss mutter something.

"Just Gale playing about." But she didn't seem so sure herself.

"Come on. Lets go." She scoops up the tiny bird and puts it with her things, taking the dagger out. "It's a shame I'm no good with them." And she throws it at a nearby tree.

Then the picture fades around me, replaced by eery red. I feel like I'm swimming but the water is thick. Too thick to even be water, and it's as red as blood.

~~~
I wake and the first thing I see is my arm, covered in dry blood. I hurry to sit up but a spitting headache stops me, as well as a pain in my side.
"Easy. Don't try to do anything too fast." Bonnie says, helping me up. I look about myself and realize we're in the cave. Zara is next to me, lying down with her scars covered up in some sort of salve.
"Is she alive?" I ask.
"Yes. Only just. The careers took our first aid kit and most of our things. I was smart enough to hide a bottle of water and some food outside the cave, so we've still got that. They also cut the string of my bow and took your daggers, so I haven't been able to hunt."
I look I over at Zara. Suddenly, a rustling comes from outside. I run out, panicked. A girl of about 14 or 15 comes out of the bushes. She has Red-brown hair and striking brown eyes. She is thin and weedy, and I could easily take her down.
She looks up and sees me, and starts to smile. In one swift movement, I have her pinned against a nearby tree. Bonnie comes out from the cave.
"Wait, Prim!" She runs over. "It's ok. She's an alliance." I look at them, confused. The girl looks about her.
"Come on, lets go inside." Bonnie says. The girl is silent and we go back into the cave. I lean against the damp rock wall.
"So, what's the story?" I say.
"Prim, this is Ruby, from district 6. She's...."
I look over at Ruby and she opens her mouth. No tongue. She was an avox. Another sound comes from outside, and I go to get up, but Bonnie stops me.
"It's just Kay getting back from hunting." I raise an eyebrow.
"Another alliance? You must have been busy." I say.
"Actually, they kind of ran into us. If it wasn't for them, we'd have all died. Kay has a knife, and Ruby was a healer in the rebellion. Summer also..." I cut her off.
"Summer?"
"Kay's sister. As I was saying, summer can.... Well, she can...." Two people slide into the cave. One is a black haired, green eyed, freckle faced, boy, and the other is exactly like him, except a little smaller and her face is younger. She is about my age while the boy is a little younger than Bonnie.
"Hi." I say.
"Hello. I'm Kay." The boy says.
"I'm Summer, his sister."
"Yeah, Bonnie told me." I say. I look at Bonnie.
"When did you run into each other?"
"This morning. A little after the tributes left. They were all an alliance, and they saw me and you guys, and..."
"We helped." Says Kay.
"Wait, the tributes only left this morning?" I say.
"Yeah. Tonight we'll see the fallen tribute..." She trails off, not wanting to say Daisy's name.
"How long until dark?" I say, but I can see the sun already climbing up the trees outside.
"Not long. Come on, we'll eat something before dark."
~
We eat a little and I can't help but stare at Zara most of the meal.
"Are you sure she'll be ok?" I ask Ruby. She nods. We finish and lounge around while the sun sets. I learn that Summer can't use a weapon, and is ashamed of it, while Kay is the opposite. He can use practically all weapons reasonably well. Ruby just sits there through the conversation, looking awquard. Suddenly I get a brainstorm. I run outside and pull off a bunch of leaves from a nearby tree. I grab a twig and go back inside and hand them to her. She beams at me, as if saying, thank you.
Then the anthem is coming down from outside. We quickly go out and I look up at the sky. The seal finishes and the words, 'Today's fallen tributes', comes up. Then they fade and I prepare to see Daisy's tiny face. But it isn't there. Instead, it is the boy from ten. I quickly get over my astonishment and realize she must be next. But she isn't. Instead, the Capitol seal comes back on an the picture fades.
Astonishment washes over me. Then confusion. But overall, Hope.
Daisy was alive.
