Chapter 15
I wake at the brink of sunrise. I half expect to be swimming in a pool of blood but its just my room. Buttercup sleeps in his basket by the door. I get up and go splash my face in the bathroom. I stare at my reflection. It's just plain old me staring back. I put on a pale blue dressing gown but then take it off. I decide to get dressed so I change into a green dress and matching tights. I then slip on a pair of sandals and go downstairs quietly. I leave a note saying I'm going for a walk and walk to the pond. I skim a few rocks over it, disturbing the dragonflies resting on lilli pads. Them I just sit and stare at the water, thinking.
The execution wasn't until midday. I could easily stay out here until 11. I could grab an apple for breakfast, some berries for morning tea. I sigh. But I didn't want Bonnie and Twill to get worried. I stand up but decide to go get an apple. They wouldn't be up for a while yet, the sun was just creeping over the horizon and I was still slightly hungry. It's takes longer to find the orchard than when I'm with Bonnie but that's to be expected. I pick a bright, ripe, red apple and take a bit. Juice dribbles down my chin and the flavor escapes into my mouth. I finish it in a few bites and pick another one and then a few more for Bonnie, Max and Twill. I then decide to do a little exploring of the 'town' Bonnie was talking about. I leave a trail behind me and soon enough, I'm stumble on 1/2 a brick wall. I stand up and look around myself. The area is slightly cleared and the brick wall makes a large square. Rusty beams and old things litter the ground. I find the corpse of an old bed and a few other hundred year old things that have long since been useful.
I look a little longer then head back to the orchard where I stop and eat an apple then head back to the pond. I skim a rock then walk back to the house. The sun is well risen by the time I walk in the door. Twill is in the Kitchen making something with the last of the dried apricots.
"Hey Primrose, did you get any apples while you were out, by any chance?" She says, looking up.
"Yes, and I had a few myself. I found the best tree, here try this one." I say, handing her one and putting the rest on the island. She takes a bite and juice dribbles down her chin.
"Delicious! Thank you Primrose." She says.
"Aren't they up yet?" I ask, gesturing above us.
"Oh, Bonnie's up. She had breakfast and went straight back upstairs. I think she's picking out what to wear. Max isn't up though. He stayed up late last night, watching that bike show in the entertainment space. He's been dead since two."
"That seems like Max. Hey, what are you making?" I ask, looking down at the apricots.
"Mini apricot balls. May as well make something nice out of this horrible fruit."
"Mmm." I say, not sure whether that's possible.
"Well, how 'bout you go upstairs and see whether you can find the best live channel. Then if Max isn't up yet, we can wake him with Bonnie." She says with a smile.
"If by wake you mean pour a bucket of cold water on him, then I'm in."
"Of course. How else!" She says, evilly.
I go upstairs and flick first to the Capitol news. It says live screening but it would most likely have step by step or something, so I settle on a different channel that says they will have live screenings and no breaks or commentary.
Unfortunately Max wakes so we don't get to wet him. We decide to all go out and go for a swim in the pool before the execution. I splash Bonnie and Max and they splash me back. We have a diving competition (see how long you can stay underwater, Max wins) then me and Bonnie climb out and dry off while max shows off. He goes to do a front flip but just does a bellyflop, then he tries a dive but also does a belly flop, so he settles for a pencil dive. Twill calls us inside so Max hops out and grabs a towel. We walk inside to find Twill pulling somthing out of the fridge. She smiles at us.
"Here, can you try these?" She says, handing us a plate of orange balls.
"Sure!" We say, taking one each. I pop it in my mouth. The usual flavor of dried apricots explodes in my mouth but sugar lessens out the goopiness of them.
"Delicious!" I say, and I mean it.
"Thanks. I made them for snacks for the execution." She says.
Suddenly, a loud buzzing sound comes from over head. We run outside and there, a little way from the house, is a hovercraft.
A single silver parachute sails down and lands somewhere in the forest then, BOOM.
Something hits me in the face. I lick my lips. Apple juice. The orchard. The hovercraft moves. Another parachute. Another boom. This time water droplets hit me, as well as some shattered rose petals. The pond. And then finally, the hovercraft drops a ring of parachutes all the way around the house. They all go off at the same time. Birds fly away and I can hear the animals fleeing. The bombs most likely blew up the raspberries as well. No animals. No fruit. No food.
The hovercraft then lands a little way off the bomb ring. Suddenly, with a buzz, the forcefield rises.
"What was that noise?" Bonnie says. I point upwards.
"The... We're trapped." I say.
"Trapped? You mean... The forcefield? It..." She stutters.
"Yes. We are trapped with no way to extra food." I say.
"Well, we still have Coin sending provisions, right!" Bonnie says, optimistically.
The hovercraft then starts up again it flies higher and higher then it stops. It starts falling. Fast. It spins and I can hear someone's screams. Maxes face goes white. He heard it two. Chip. It crashes to the earth and with an ear shattering explosion, bursts into flames.
I burst into tears. How would I ever get back to Katniss now?
"Shh, don't cry Prim. We'll be fine. I promise. We have plenty of food stored and Coin can't just stop sending food! We'll be fine." Bonnie says.
"Why not! What stops her from not sending any food!" I shout at her. Max talks this time. "Because. She can't. Why do you think she didn't kill you when you survived the explosions? It's not just pity. She would go mad if she knew you were dead because of her." I stop crying and look at him.
"Then how can she bear this? Keeping me locked up away from my family while she is telling them I'm dead?" I spit.
"Simple. She can't." He says. We look at him, puzzled. "The night before I left, I couldn't sleep. I was in thirteen and so was Coin. I accidentally stumbled across her apartment. I heard... Sobbing. She was talking to herself. Or her cat, I'm not sure. She sobbed things like, is it really worth it? And, What have I come to? It was strange. Then I knocked on her door and she was quiet. She opened it after a minute and she was back to her usual harsh self. But she was talking about you, Prim. You, brought the regret out of her, you." He says.
We sit there, taking it in.
"But she cared more for her plan, obviously, than for me." I say.
"Well, yes and no. I think she planned to do these last hunger games and then let you go." He says.
We sit there for a minute. Suddenly I notice Max has a sad look on his face. Then I remember.
"I'm sorry about Chip." I say.
"Don't be. He was an amazing guy. But it's just..." He trails off. "I can't believe his last few minutes was trapping us in and getting rid of our only other food resources."
"He was blind. Coin drew him in by her spell. Don't think he was doing it from his own will." Bonnie says, reaching for his hand. He takes it.
"Come on, lets go get ready, it's nearly the execution." Twill suggests.
We get dressed out of our wet, fruit splattered swimmers and I take a shower to wash out all the chlorine. I get dressed into yesterday's clothes and don't even bother to change earrings. I make my way upstairs with a heavy heart. My head reels with Max's words.
The atmosphere isn't like the light one earlier. It's dampened and darkened over the death of Max's brother and the fact we were trapped.
Yes, we were trapped. The thought echoes around my head as I turn on the TV and sit on a couch. Bonnie sits next to me and puts he arm around my shoulders. Max sits next to her and they hold hands. Twill sits on my other side. We look at the screen. Just in time. The ad break closes and we are staring out at the jam-packed city circle. Coin appears on a balcony and the crowd goes wild. Hatred burns inside me. Then Katniss comes on, with her mockingjay bow slung across her shoulder, her hand resting on it. I force back tears. Then they wheel president snow out. He has a white rosé over his chest. The feeling of hatred grows. Katniss pulls an arrow from her sheath. She aims the bow at his chest. Snow coughs up blood, with a smirk on his face. She pauses for a second, as if thinking. She swings and releases the arrow.
President Coin, our only way of food and water, falls off her balcony. She lands, with an arrow in her breast, dead.
