In the 1930s, psychologists first came up with the term "elective mutism." They thought that kids who did talk at home but didn't talk in school elected, or chose, not to speak. It wasn't until the '90s that the name of the disorder was changed to selective mutism, because they figured out that kids who had it couldn't speak in select situations - most often at school.
