Chapter 9 : Splash
I re-read the text a few times to be sure I had read it correctly. A pool party? It wasn't exactly swimming weather. A couple more weeks and I'd be pulling out my scarves. I guess I finally found something wrong with mister perfect. He was nuts. Maybe clinically insane, I could only hope.
I keyed in my reply.
Isn't it a bit cold for a pool party? -Sadie
I snuggled into my comforter, warding off thoughts of ever joining the polar bear club, as I waited for the crazy to show.
buzz...buzz...
The screen lit up my dark room.
It's an indoor pool, sorry, I should have been more clear. -H
Damn, not crazy. Just trying to kill me. I thought forward to what plans I may have had for the weekend and remembered I had planned on going over to Kara's for a girly slumber party. It had been a while since we've had one and we wanted to do it before we got jobs that would take up our time. My phone buzzed again, interrupting my thoughts.
It's okay if you don't want to go. I know its short notice. -H
I quickly began typing in a message. I didn't want him to think I was blowing him off. I paused as the words I just thought ran through my brain. I shook my head at the images that were threatening to take form in my mind and continued to type.
It's not that I don't want to go, I'm supposed to go over to my friend Kara's house this weekend. -Sadie
Harry was quick to reply.
Bring her. The more the merrier! -H
Alright. See you this weekend. Text me the address. -Sadie
Looks like we're going to a pool party.
.
"A pool party? Are you serious?" Kara's voice sounded through the phone. I had called her in the morning as soon as I thought she'd be awake.
"Yes, but if you'd rather we stay at your house we don't have to go."
"Hell yeah we have to go!" I pulled the phone away from my ear as she shrieked. I moved it slowly back to my ear when I felt it was safe and I was no longer in danger of any serious hearing damage. "Besides, I need to meet this 'Haaarrry'." She drew out the length of his name. I could just imagine her wiggling her eyebrows on the other end of the line. "And does Harry have some friends I can meet as well? You know wet boys are my specialty!"
I sighed. I was beginning to regret telling her anything about Harry.
"Just promise you'll behave yourself?" I partly begged.
"Me? When have I ever not behaved?" She asked with mock offence in her voice.
"I just mean, sometimes you get a little unpredictable around cute boys. That's all."
There was a pause.
"So his friends are cute?"
.
The next couple of days leading up to the weekend were spent deciding what swimsuits we should wear. As well as Kara constantly grilling me on what each of the guys looked like. It seemed like she was attempting to pick out her future husband.
.
The day of the pool party came. Kara, who was usually on time, surpassed my expectations by showing up to my house an hour earlier than we had planned. She scoffed when she saw my face.
"Sadie!" She gasped. "Why aren't you wearing any make up? If we're going to be half naked around cute boys, we need to look good." I rolled my eyes at her.
"We're going swimming, Kara. Not entering a beauty pageant."
"Hello! That's why they invented waterproof." She gave me a look that said, 'duh.'
I finally agreed to some waterproof eyeliner to make her happy, but that was it. Once she was satisfied, we bagged up some towels and a change of clothes to go along with our bathing suits. We tossed our bags into her backseat and we were off.
We sang along to Adele during the drive. It was one of Kara's new favorites, which meant it was constantly in her CD changer. It would stay there either until it developed a skip or until she found new music to obsess over.
It was a 20 minute drive, but the time passed by quickly. The minutes were filled with songs and Kara joking that she wasn't going to get out of the pool until she got herself a date. Assuming she fancied any of the guys. Which knowing her, she'd probably want them all.
Soon we arrived at the address Harry had given me. It was a youth community center. There were just a few cars there. Among them, the jeep I had seen when I first met Harry. We parked and after grabbing our bags from the backseat, made our way to the front entrance of the building. We walked up to the double glass doors. I reached out and grasped the handle, giving it a tug. Nothing. The door rattled a bit as I tried again, repeatedly yanking on the door. It was locked. I looked at Kara, she was wearing the same confused expression I was. I took out my phone to text Harry.
We're outside the front door but it's locked. -Sadie
It took a minute before he responded.
Sorry, be right there! -H
"He's coming." I told Kara after reading his text.
While we waited, I cupped my hands around my eyes as I peered through the glass doors at a dim hallway. Shortly after, I saw Harry round the corner, my mouth went dry and my eyes widened slightly. He was shirtless and barefoot only wearing a pair of small stripped swim trunks. Tattoos across his front and littered down his arm were on full display. His hair was laying flat against the side of his face, clearly he'd already been in the pool. I swallowed hard against the dry lump in my throat. What was he doing to me?
I stood back as he tiptoed toward the door, careful not to slip on the shiny linoleum floor. He reached his arms up to the top of the door, leaving his bare torso stretched out before me. I tried to avert my eyes from the sight by looking over at Kara who, of course, caught me staring. She was smirking at me with a knowing look. Damn her.
I heard a click as Harry pulled a latch at the top of the door and pushed it open for us. He jumped back as a cool breeze followed us in. We shut the door behind us and Harry moved to slide the latch back in place, securing the door.
"So why does the door have to be locked?" I asked as we began to walk down the hall, following Harry's lead.
"Oh, this place is closed by this time of year, only open to private parties." He said as we turned a corner. "Liam works as a lifeguard here in the summer so he booked today for us to have some fun. Only thing is, he has to be on duty during the party. If he didn't sit in as a lifeguard we'd be required to have another worker here."
I guess it made sense, for liability reasons probably. But I felt bad for Liam.
"So does he have to be on duty the entire time?"
"He's able to take 10 minutes of swim time every hour, but he'll be looking out for everyone the rest of the time." He shrugged showing it wasn't a huge deal.
I could hear boisterous yelling echoing down the hall and could smell chlorine in the air, telling me we were getting close to the pool. Harry lead us up to a steel door with a small rectangular window. He pulled it open and gestured for us to go inside. I was hit with the smell or chlorinated water and a warmer temperature change. The air felt thicker in here.
"The girl's locker room is just over there." Harry pointed at an open door leading to a tiled room.
We walked along the side of the pool towards the locker room so we could change. Along the way I suddenly heard my name being called. I looked around then my eyes spotted Niall waving from atop the taller of two diving boards. He was yelling and waving at me. I waved back then spotted Louis sneaking up behind Niall. Louis took him by surprise and shoved him off the board. Niall flailed slightly, but recovered a bit on the fall down and cannonballed into the pool.
Louis was laughing hysterically, doubled over as Niall reemerged from the water. Niall spit water out and started to swear up at Louis who was now laying on his stomach at the edge of the board and pointing down at Niall, still consumed with laughter. What a bunch of goofs.
Just then a whistle blew. Kara and I stopped and looked to see Liam sitting on a tall white seat with a long red life preserver across his lap. He was wearing red swim trunks and a white muscle shirt. He pointed and hollered at Louis with authority.
"Louis! Foul play sir!"
"Aw come on! I was only messing about!" Louis argued back.
Liam just gave a stern look which Louis seemed to roll his eyes at then jump of the board himself.
I shook my head and started to walk back toward the locker room when I noticed Kara wasn't beside me. I looked over and saw her standing where we had just been, just staring at Liam. Uh-oh. Looks like she found herself a Mr. Kara. I walked over to her and dragged her back towards the locker room with me.
