Chapter 6 : Strum

After all the pizza orders were in, Louis announced it would be about 20 minutes for the delivery to arrive. Which was met with more groans from Niall. Louis recruited the help of Liam and Zayn to help retrieve enough drinks, cups and plates for everyone from the house. This left me sitting in a slightly awkward silence with Niall. I watched him tuck his electric guitar away in a padded case. As he flipped the switches on the side, securing the case closed, I decided to break the silence.

"So how long have you been playing guitar?" It was a lame attempt at a conversation, but at least is was something to fill the void.

"Um," He thought for a brief moment before going on, "I guess as soon as I was big enough to handle one I started messing with them. And I loved it."

"It shows. You seem very confident with it. And you play very well." I smiled and earned a toothy grin and a thanks in return. He had a really cute smile. Not wanting the silence to come back, I went on. "I wish I could play an instrument. I think I'm just too impatient to learn." I looked down and picked at a loose thread on my pants.

"Well it's not terribly difficult. It's mainly remembering the chords and where to put your fingers. Some people pick it up fairly quickly." He walked over and grabbed an acoustic guitar I hadn't noticed leaning against the side of the couch. "Here, I'll show you a few chords."

He sat down next to me and began strumming a few strings and turning the knobs at the top, tuning it to his liking.

"Okay, here." He placed the guitar on my lap. "Now rest your arm here." He pointed to the curve of the guitar's body. "And curl your fingers around the neck here." He instructed me which strings to hold down and where then said, "Alright, give her a strum." I did and immediately grimaced, it sounded horrible. "Oh, whoops!" He laughed and made a face. "Guess I'm not used to playing from this angle, hold on."

He surprised me buy saying, "Duck." As he suddenly leaned to the side and lifted his leg up. I crouched down a bit as he moved his leg over my head and around to the other side of me. He adjusted a bit so that now I was situated right between his legs. I felt him lean forward, his front now flush against my back. His face came into view as he leaned his head over my left shoulder to see the guitar. I felt his left hand fold over mine at the neck of the guitar, guiding my fingers to the proper positions. His right hand sat motionless on his thigh.

"Alright, now try." He said with confidence. I strummed and it sounded lovely. "That's much better." He said sounding very pleased. He went on to show me two other chords. Each time his fingers guiding mine with placement. "Okay, now try it yourself. Do two strums each for the first two chords, then just one on the last." He kept his left hand cradling mine, but didn't interfere as I placed my fingers on the strings, it was just there for reassurance. I did as he said. I almost messed up the second chord, but was able to quickly correct myself. I strummed the last chord and let it hang in the air. I smiled feeling accomplished.

"That's great!" He cheered as his left hand curled onto mine and his right hand suddenly came to life, patting my side in a congratulatory gesture. "You're a pretty fast learner." He said smiling at me over my shoulder.

I turned my head to look and him, returning the smile, "Well, you're a good teacher."

He beamed a little, there was something about him that just oozed light. I suddenly became aware of his right hand that had been patting my side earlier, now remained on my waist. We both seemed to realize the close proximity of our faces at the same time as our smiles faded slightly. I nervously licked my lips and caught sight of Niall's eyes glancing down at my now moist lips. Suddenly he was leaning in closing the distance between our faces. I felt my eyelids drifting closed as I waited for his lips to meet mine. I could feel his breath on my face, alerting me to his closeness. I felt my heart quicken.

"Am I interrupting something?"

=O=

"No way! Harry walked in on you and Niall kissing?!"

"Almost kissing." I corrected Kara before she completely lost it. We were close, oh so close. But our lips never met, darn. I sat with Kara at our usual spot on the swings at the park. Dishing about what went on at practice earlier that day. I may have chosen to omit the strange feelings I got around Harry, and the slightly sensual way that he danced during songs. I felt that may be best kept to myself for now.

"So what happened after he caught you?" Kara urged me on, needing her fix of drama.

"Not much actually." I tried to let her down gently. "Before Niall or I could say anything, Louis came barging in with the pizza. The other two trailed behind him with dining supplies."

Kara's face looked defeated. Clearly she'd been hoping for a little more action. But it didn't seem like car chases or fist fights were in the cards. Much to her dismay. I had noticed, however, that all throughout the rest of practice I received strange vibes from Harry. After he caught us, in our nearly compromising position, he didn't seem as friendly toward me as he had been before. In fact, he barely spoke to me. Was there something I wasn't privy to? Maybe Niall actually had a girlfriend. That would explain why Harry would be upset. If he were indeed upset. It was the only sound possibility I could think of other than...no. I didn't want to think about it. Thinking about it would only make me hopeful. Hopeful for something that couldn't, or at least shouldn't, ever happen. Harry was not...

"Jealous! He is SO jealous!" Kara squealed with such enthusiasm it scared me. "It's totally obvious."

"No, he can't be. I mean, why would he?" I was lost in an ocean of confused emotion.

"Oh come on! Have you seen you?"

I just shrugged. So she went on.

"Let's be real here Sadie." She put her serious face on. "Harry is cute, right?" I nodded, though 'cute' was an understatement. "And you're beautiful, right?" I shrugged again. "I'm gonna pretend you just nodded again."

I had to hand it to her, Kara was always great for an ego boost.

"Why would he invite you to his band's practice?"

"Because he's nice and wants to be friends?" Even I didn't believe myself. Or at least, I didn't want to.

"Wrong!" Kara shouted. "He wants to spend time with you. He's letting you into his world. Sadie, he likes you." She had this triumphant look on her face like she just solved the worlds toughest riddle. And who knows, maybe she had.
