Chapter 16 : Hold Me Close
We drove down the dirt road, enveloped in foliage, for a short while before Harry turned off the path and parked in a small space between some trees. I didn't realize how dark it had gotten until he turned off the engine and the headlights went out. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little anxious.
"Ready?" Harry asked as he turned to face me, smiling mischievously.
"Should I be afraid?"
He shook his head. "No, I'll keep you safe. Promise."
I took a deep breath as he stepped out of the truck and came around to open my door. I couldn't help but be a little nervous. Fear of the unknown was a powerful thing. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest.
Once I was out of the truck, Harry reached behind my seat, pulling out a dark colored blanket along with a camera with an attached strap trailing behind. He tossed the blanket over his shoulder and hung the camera around his neck.
Suddenly, Harry surprised me by taking my hand in his. I looked down at our linked hands then back at him in confusion. Harry caught my stare.
"It's dark and the ground is a bit uneven in places. I don't want you to trip." He shrugged.
Harry lead me through the trees, occasionally holding back low branches and brush so I could pass more easily. My heart was still beating at a slightly erratic pace. Though this time it wasn't so much because of worry, but because of the pulse I felt between our palms. Harry hadn't let go once, and I was starting to enjoy the comfort of his hand. It both calmed and excited me.
"Almost there." Harry announced as we came upon a chain link fence. Unfortunately, it was then that Harry let go of my hand as he began searching the length of the fence. I watched him curiously for a moment, but then a flash of light caught my eye. Past the fence, on the other side, I could see shining lights in the distance and hear the muffled sounds of engines.
"Ah-ha! Here we go! After you." Harry pulled back a piece of the fence, creating a split and allowing me to pass through. I ducked down and passed to the other side, careful not to get my coat caught. Though, apparently, I didn't duck low enough. My elastic holding my ponytail got snagged my a piece of the fence, affectively removing it. I sighed as I tugged it free then placed the tie around my wrist. Harry followed after and promptly took hold of my hand once again. I tried to ignore the feeling of joy that swelled inside me as he gently tugged me along.
There were no trees on this side of the fence. We were walking up a slight hill when he instructed me to crouch lower as we neared the top.
"Okay, now when I say, we'll run up over the top and down the other side, alright?" He looked to me for confirmation, so I nodded. What were we doing? Before I had a chance to second guess my agreement to come with him tonight, he commanded,
"Now!"
We rushed up the hill, hand in hand. My breath caught as we reached the top and I took in the sight before me, realizing where we were. We were at the airport.
"Come on!" Harry urged me and gave my hand a pull as I had momentarily stopped in my tracks. I quickly followed suit as we descended the hill into a small dip in the ground. Once there, Harry stopped. He released my hand again, much to my disappointment, as he laid out the blanket on the grass.
"And now we wait." He said as he sat down on the blanket and motioned for me to do the same. He began to adjust some dials on his camera, looking through the lens periodically to check. Once he seemed satisfied, he lay back on the blanket, and rested the camera on his chest..
"You know, you get the best view if you lay down." He suggested.
Given what happened the last time we were laying down together, I was cautious. I did as he said, but kept about a foots distance between us. Harry looked over at me and assessed the space I left between our bodies. He smirked and moved his hand up to his face where he toyed with his lips, pinching the bottom between his thumb and pointer finger.
"What's so amusing?" I ask.
"You." He states as he looks up at the darkening sky. "Leaving space to run? Or afraid you might grope me again?"
My jaw slacked open.
"I did not grope you! It was an accident. And I said I was sorry." I defended.
"I know." His smile grew. "What? I can't tease you about it?"
He looked back over at me. I could see his dimples in the faint light from the airport. The gorgeous jerk.
"It was just embarrassing and I'd appreciate it if you'd drop it." I sighed. I was trying to forget that moment and him reminding me wasn't helping.
"Alright, I'll drop it."
"Thank you."
"If you stop being afraid of me and come closer."
"I am not afraid of you-"
Just then, I was startled as a loud whirring noise grew from faint to almost deafening in a matter of seconds. Suddenly, a seemingly larger than life airplane came into view above us with engines roaring. I jumped at the abrupt appearance and rolled closer to Harry, clutching onto his arm. The wind created by the plane caused my hair to whip around me. I silently cursed the fence for taking hold of my elastic earlier. I could barely hear Harry's soft chuckles over the din. Suddenly, I felt his hand brush the wild hair away from my face, his palm rested on my cheek as he looked to me.
"This wasn't exactly what I meant when I said to come closer. But I'll take what I can get." He smiled softly and continued to stare at me as he held my face in his hand.
A/N: Ooooh what chya think about that?! Things seem to be heating up a bit between Harry and Sadie. Thoughts?
