Chapter 13 : Weekend at Bernie's
My interview with Bernadette couldn't have gone better. She was so nice and seemed to like me. She offered me the job after only the first 10 minutes. We spent the rest of the time discussing what days I would work and which days I'd have off. We decided I'd have weekends and alternating Fridays off. After talk of schedules we enjoyed some samples of a few of the pastries that I would be learning how to make. They were all delicious.
When she asked how soon I could start, I told her as soon as possible. She seemed very pleased to hear that and told me to be back tomorrow morning around 8:30am. According to Bernadette, once I arrived I would get a tour of the bakery and begin my training with an experienced employee. I was more excited than I thought I'd be, tomorrow couldn't come soon enough.
=O=
I woke with a smile on my face. Today I started my first job. I made sure to set my alarm to wake me early enough to be sure I'd have time for a shower and to dry my hair. Once my hair was dry, I pulled it back into a neat pony tail. Bernadette had told me to wear comfortable clothes, but nothing too baggy. I slipped into a pair of stretchy skinny jeans, they were faded and nearly matched the color of the sky around midday. I wore a plain white t-shirt that was form fitted with cap sleeves. I finished with my most comfortable pair of chucks. Hopefully my feet wouldn't be killing me by the end of the day. I had a light breakfast of just some toast and orange juice. My stomach was in knots. It felt like the first day of school all over again.
I was able to calm myself a bit and clear my head as I rode my bike into town. I locked my bike up at a bike rack that was just a few buildings down from the bakery. As I approached the front door, I tucked a strand of hair that had fallen loose from my ponytail around my ear and straightened my shirt a bit. A small brass bell chimed my arrival as I entered the shop. Bernadette was quick to come around the counter to greet me.
"Sadie, dear! Lovely to see you again. Excited for your first day?" She beamed a wide smile.
"Yes ma'am. Just a little nervous."
"You'll do fine. And none of this "ma'am" business honey, just call me Bernie."
"Yes ma'- I mean, Bernie."
We both shared a short laugh. I was going to enjoy working for her. Bernie lead me to the back office where there was a small coat rack. I shrugged out of my jacket and hung it on an open hook.
"You'll be shadowing one of my best workers today. He'll show you the ropes and how everything works." Bernie glanced out a small window as we heard the sound of stones crunching under tires, announcing someone had pulled into the gravel lot behind the bakery.
"Oh good. Here he is now." Bernie smiled as I heard a car door slam. The back door opened as I put on a cheerful face to greet my new work mate. However, my smile faltered and my nerves were now back full force as I was met with a familiar pair of green eyes.
"Sadie, this is Harry. He'll teach you everything you need to know."
Bernie made her exit to resume manning the front counter and left Harry and I standing in silence, looking anywhere but at each other. Harry was first to break the silence as he shuffled to remove his jacket and hung it next to mine.
"I um...I'm sorry about the other night."
I finally looked back at him, confused.
"Wh-what? I thought I should be the one apologizing. I thought you might be mad at me."
"Mad?" Harry asked surprised as his eyes sought out mine. "Why on earth would I be mad at you?"
"Because of what happened when we woke up, I..." I trailed off. I felt my cheeks begin to heat up as I recalled the memory.
"Sadie, how could I be mad at you over that? It was my fault, I shouldn't have let us fall asleep. Though I will admit, I was a little shocked at the um...wake up call."
I covered my reddening face with my hands and heard him chuckle in response. I then felt Harry's hands on mine as he pulled them away from my face. We were so close now I was forced to look him in the eye. Oh those eyes.
"Don't be embarrassed." He soothed in a quiet voice, still holding my hands between us. "I know it was an accident, but it wasn't the worst way to wake up." The corner of his lips lifted, revealing his dimples. My eyes widened a bit which just caused him to chuckle again as he dropped my hands and turned away from me. He disappeared into a small room. Was he flirting? That last comment definitely seemed a little on the flirty side. Okay, maybe a lot on the flirty side. My thoughts were interrupted when Harry reappeared holding two aprons. He slipped his head through the strap on one of them, then held the other out toward me.
"Let's get you dressed for success, shall we?"
A/N: Sorry it's such a short chapter and it's been ages since I've updated. Forgive me? (insert sad puppy face here) I'll try to update this story a little more frequently, I feel like 3 weeks is way to long to wait for updates.
I started a Louis story called Bad Influence. I'm not sure how often I'll update it, but I feel like it will only be 10 chapters or less. If you check it out, please let me know what you think. It only has an intro right now, but I'm kind of a little proud of it.
