Part 4
The sun was shining brightly over the mansion. Birds were chirping and a light breeze rolled through a few of the windows that were left open. The smell of breakfasty goodness filled the air.
"Yeay, pancakes!" This was a mix of child and adult voices as Teorus and Ichthys sat at the dining room table with Goldie in between them. Tall stacks of fluffy floppiness sat in the center, along with pile of breakfast meats, fresh fruits and other things only seen laid out in those banquets in fancy movies.
Scorpio's brow twitched in annoyance as the three opposite him were making such a big deal of their morning routine. But, it wasn't routine at all. A tiny human sat at their table and the idiot squad (as he would refer to them in his reports at times) were cooing and doting over her. It hadn't even been 24 hours since the goldfish found her way to their house and already she's caused so many changes. There was an extra set of everything from the bedroom Vega made up to child sized items like furniture and housewares. Plastic tumblers were found all over the house, but Scorpio and Leon were pretty sure they were Teorus' and Ichthys'. It was becoming quite the pain to suddenly step on toys left all over the place. The heads of the departments were pretty sure that was the Pisces doing and not their guest. Still, it wouldn't do them any good to complain anymore. It would only get worse.
Goldie was trying to reach for her sippy cup but the wonder twins were too busy making pancake houses with sausage support and bacon siding. Dui, however, did. "Oh, here you go, princess." He smiled happily at her as she blinked at him with a curious stare.
"I a princess?" She said this just before drinking her juice.
"I-is that juice," Teorus asked as he finally noticed that Goldie was being helped by someone other than himself. "Oh no, Goldie," He said as he took the sippy cup from her. "You should be drinking milk for strong bones as you grow up." But Goldie didn't care for milk. She wanted her juice and reached out with grabby hands at the cup that was held in the air. Her pouty lip quivered as she was about to cry.
"If you don't give her back that cup, someone will be in for a world of hurt." Leon was reading a book at the table while having his breakfast and sighed as he pointed to Scorpio with his cup.
Teorus saw Pompeii was imminent and immediately returned the cup forthwith. Goldie clutched the cup like it was the most precious thing and beamed a smile at the Leo god. "You're welcome, my dear." He resumed sipping tea and reading.
"Ta-ta... Tank you!" Goldie was so happy to have the juice back and drank it all. Peace resumed at the dining table for a while until it was time to get to work. But, just how were they going to do their regular rounds, mind Goldie and find her parents were quite problematic.
Moments later, however, a new problem arose. "I... I need to go potty..." Goldie frowned with worry as there were nothing but really big boys at the table and mommy always told her that boys and girls went to the bathroom separately. There was Mama Teo, but he was really a boy that looked like a girl and Papa Ikky who was really good at making funny faces. Uncle Meanie Head looked like he was going to be sick. The nice but sometimes mean man didn't look away from the thing he was holding and Dui and Huey just looked at each other with some weird face on.
"VEGA!!!!!!!"
The mansion practically shook with the name of the one girl that was always there. "You guys are pathetic," she said as she took Goldie's hand and led her away from the table. "One day I will not come when called and you'll have to take care of her yourselves." She looked at the poor girl who was close to doing the pee pee dance and sighed heavily. "And why is she still wearing the same thing as yesterday? One shoe?!" Renewed fear spread throughout the room as there was nothing more scary than a tiny woman enraged. "When I'm done helping her, we're going to have a serious talk about what you're supposed to do because I cannot be going back and forth..." This tirade of a monologue went on the entire time she let Goldie away.
The gods quickly dispersed and found their way to the library before Vega would return. They gathered in the upper stacks and began discussing what to do. Without their powers, they couldn't do too much. But, going into town was just as bad as they weren't completely familiar with the area or customs. And they knew walking around with her would definitely get them in trouble.
"What about the reflecting pool," Dui asked. "I know it's usually used for remote wish and punishment casting, but what if we could use it to see what's going on in town?"
"The humans have this thing called a television," Huedaut began, "It's used for informational and entertainment purposes."
"Oh?" Teorus asked curiously. "What does it do?"
"It shows the news and shows for people of varying ages, " Dui said. "I saw them a few times. They're pretty fascinating. That's where I had the idea to use the reflecting pool. Maybe it would channel her thoughts or use her energy to pinpoint where she belongs."
"As much as it would pain me to allow that human into that room, I guess we have no choice for the moment." Leon sighed heavily. He preferred to keep that room spotless but, if it will help get Goldie home, a little dirt can't possibly hurt.
"There you are!" Collective flinching happened as Vega returned with a now shoeless Goldie, who hopped her way back into the group and latched onto the first one she reached, Scorpio.
"He-hey!" He bellowed at the tiny human, but she was giggling all the way. Somehow, either by celestial means or the work of the Devil himself, Scorpio was trying to figure it out, Goldie managed to climb up his chest and make her way to his shoulders where she sat hugging his head. This made Teorus and Ichthys burst into laugher. The others had the dignity to try and silence their outbursts.
"Looks like you're her handler today," Leon said as he sighed the last of his laughter out.
Goldie reached out and messed with Leon's hair. "Ooooo, sooooooft."
More laughing filled the library. "Looks like it's your turn to be temporary parents," Ichthys said. Teorus looked worried. Scorpio was known for his short tempter and Goldie is really just a baby. "It'll be alright, Mama Teo," Ichthys said as he hugged his friend by the shoulders. "Auntie Leo's got this." He then jumped the railing to the first floor before he could get hit by the lion and giggled all the way out the library.
"Aunty Leo! Uncky Meanie Head!" Goldie was happy. She found a new family after being away from her mommy and daddy for so long. She was so scared of that dark man that she thought she was going to be eaten alive. She tried not to think about those things, but she did miss her real mommy and daddy.
The girl that helped her to the bathroom was like her sister. Vega beamed up at her before turning to the others. "I had reports to files so that talk we were supposed to have will have to wait." And she quickly turned to follow Papa Ikky out of the room they were in.
Goldie's chest suddenly clenched in a pain she couldn't explain, but knew happened whenever she thought about her parents. "Hey," a rumbling voice came from underneath her and she looked at the big forehead she was holding onto. "We'll find your parents, okay?" Meanie Head pointed to Dui and Huey. "Your big brothers will help, too, okay? So stop worrying."
Goldie began to sniffle and hitch her breath. Tell tale signs of someone about to cry. "Oh no," Scorpio said in panic, "No, no, no!" He looked to each of the remaining gods and Hued grabbed a hold of the child. "It's one thing to have a kid cry into my clothing. It's another to have one cry on my head."
Goldie stared at her new big brother and buried her face in his shirt, crying uncontrollably. The others stared on in horror. "Now I know what you felt last night,"Huedhaut said as he held the crying babe in his arms. Trying no to act rash, he kept to the matter at hand. "So when shall we bring her to the reflecting pool?"
"We'll have to see," Leon said, deep in thought. "It's one thing if we use, another if an adult human were to make contact. No one ever thought this would happen." He sighed as he ran his hand through his messed up hair. "Give me some time to do some research. In the meanwhile, since you're here, brothers Grimm," he said with a smirk, "why not entertain your new found sister until then. I'm sure we have books suitable to a child's liking. Just don't go outside unless you plan to enchant the garden. If anything happens to her, it's our heads that'll roll." Leon had a slight inkling that this was the King's doing, but he didn't want to say for sure. Either way, they still had to get her home.
"Understood, "Dui nodded. "So, Goldie, what kind of stories do you like? We're in a place with lots of stories."
Scorpio had to drag Teorus out of the library as he and Leon left to check on the reflecting pool. Teorus frowned heavily as he was made to leave, but she had to get used to the others at some point and it was the library. What could possibly go wrong, he thought as he looked one more time at his adopted goldfish before finally closing the library doors.
Goldie watched as Uncky Meanie Head dragged Mama Teo behind him and Aunty Leo. Her new family was really weird, but they made her laugh so much than in the last few days. Goldie was very happy for the time being and didn't mind it if she stayed there forever.
"Goldie?" Dui had called to her and asked about stories again. She looked to Huey who had the deepest, bluest eyes she ever saw and stared into them. "Is... is she okay?"
"I think we're having a staring contest," Hued said without stirring his gaze from the girl. "Are we having a staring contest, Goldie? I thought we were going to look at books."
The girl squeezed her eyes tight after what felt like a really, really, really long time. She didn't realize what she was doing until they started to burn. Goldie rubbed her eyes to make the hurt go away and shook her head. She looked at Huey and then Dui who shrugged and turned to go down the stairs. Huey put her down and took her tiny hand into his really, really big one and led her down what looked like many stairs that spiraled way down to where Dui had gone. Goldie whimpered as she had never seen these kind of stairs before. Stairs are supposed to go in a straight line, aren't they?
"It's okay to be scared," Huey said to her, a nice smile was on his pretty face. He really has a nice pretty face... "We can take them one at a time, okay? I'll hold your hand the whole way." Goldie gulped down the fear as she glanced at those really scary swirling stairs and nodded, putting on a serious face as she stepped down to the first step they took.
This was a slow and tedious process. Had it been Leon or Scorpio, they would have simply carried her down, most likely like a side of ham or a sack or a sack of rice on their side. If it was Teorus or Ichthys, they would have found a crazy and fun way to go down the spiral stairs. But, Huedhaut, bless his fascination with humans and abundance of patience, took his time letting Goldie go down each and every step. Meanwhile, Dui was going through the huge library looking for any book that was close to fairy tales or stories that children would like. He managed to find some fables and fairy tales, as well as, myths and legends that they could try and work with. He had a sizable stack on a table by the time Huedhaut made it down. There was a big couch in the library by one of the windows and Dui lifted the books easily and led them there.
It was a peaceful time involving fairies and dragons, princes and princesses. But, eventually the guys were getting tired. The couch was really comfy and the sun warmed them just right. If anyone should have been sleepy, it should have been Goldie. But, last night's excitement kept them all tossing and turning so it was no surprise that they finally drifted off into slumber.
Goldie noticed that the story suddenly stopped She looked up at her new big brothers and saw they fell asleep. Dui had the big pictureless book on his lap and his head on his raised hand while Huey sat with his eyes closed and armed crossed. Goldie tried to wake them up, but it was like pushing her big Uncle Jeffry when he came to visit. He was immovable even by adults! So, taking it upon herself to find a new story, Goldie struggled off the couch and began walking by the tall things with all the books. A lot of the books were old with funny squiggles on them. Some smelled really funny and old like her great grandma whom always gives her a candy when they went to visit her.
She was getting tired from walking these long ways when something caught her eye. It was on a higher place than the other books, but it was like a twinkling star calling out to her. Was it saying something? Goldie looked around to see if there was something she could climb on, like the step stool mommy let her use to get to the kitchen sink whenever she wanted to help wash the dishes. Sadly, there was nothing like that so she merely stepped on tippy toes and tried to reach for the sparkly thing. Her tiny fingers grazed at the sparkly thing, making her struggle. If she could just put her feet somewhere, she'd be able to pull herself up and get the sparkly thing.
Dui groaned as he rubbed sleep from his eyes. He couldn't believe he fell asleep when he was supposed to be reading stories to Goldie. He turned to see Huedhaut's head had lulled forward and his chin rested on his chest. Looking down at the stop where their charge, Dui quickly got up in surprise. "Hued! Hued, wake up!" He shook the other god violently "Wake the hell up!"
Huedhaut woke with a start as Shadow Dui appeared, anger in his eyes. Looking around, he saw why. "Where's-"
The sounds of a tiny struggle could be heard not far from where they were and they hurried before something terrible could happen. When they arrived, Goldie was hanging off a shelf and pulling on something that seemed wedged into that particular shelf. What the child didn't see was that the other books were coming out with it and the vibrations were causing the other books to slowly make their way to the edge of their shelves.
"That brat is gonna get crushed," Shadow Dui said as he raced over just in time to scoop the child up and narrowly miss the avalanche of literature. Holding the child up to look at him face to face, he was very angry indeed. "What did you think you were doing," he asked in a stern tone.
Goldie looked at the man holding her with a frown. "You're not Dui..." This man looked like Dui, but he wasn't Dui. So who was he and where was he all this time.
"I am most certainly not," Shadow Dui growled. He was trying to put fear into the child and all he was getting was that frown. He was in a bad mood since having to do something he didn't want to. Ever since he heard that Goldie was staying with them, he made it a point for Dui to deal with her and that he would stay away. But the doofus had to fall asleep.
"Goldie, this is Dui's twin brother... Lui." Huedhaut smirked when he saw the appalled look on Shadow Dui's face. "Dui is back by the couch napping. We should probably go back there soon." He looked at Shadow Dui with a calm stare and turned back towards the direction of the couch. Huedhaut took Goldie from the grumpy god and slowly led her back to the couch.
"So,... Does that mean I has another big brother?" Goldie was a little confused as she looked at Lui, but smiled back at him as she held Huey's hand.
Huedhaut simply laughed softly and nodded. Goldie beamed at the thought of having another big brother.
Shadow Dui was not. "Great... Now I gotta be the Flash and tell the doofus not to screw up again." Shadow Dui raced back to the couch and let his alter personality know to get it together.
Huedhaut was surprised that Goldie knew right away that that wasn't Dui. He noticed Goldie was clutching a book and stopped to kneel down. "Goldie, was this why you climbed the shelf?"
The child nodded as she handed it over. "It was sparkling and I thought I could hear music coming from it." Goldie didn't really want to let go of the book, but she couldn't really read yet. All she could do was watch the book sparkle and hear it's song.
Hued took the book and gasped. The book Goldie was called to was an ancient Atlantean book of muses. Looking back at the child, it might have made some sense. "Hmm, interesting," he said to no one in particular and began getting lost in thought.
Goldie was watching Huey make a serious face. She knew this face well. It was on her sister's face whenever she had to do stuff for school. That was a school face. But, after that mini adventure, Goldie was tired and didn't want to walk the long way back to the couch. She poked Huey in the cheek and he blinked a few times before smiling at her and picking her up.
By now Dui was back at the couch looking rather sad. "Sorry, Hued," he said as he took the babe from him.
"It's alright," Huedhaut said as he returned to his seat. He watched as Goldie took to Dui's lap and began to drift off to sleep. He put a finger to his lips and then pointed to the child. Dui nodded in understanding. Looking at the book she found, Huedhaut began to wonder just what was going on.
Dui wrapped his arms around the nodding off child as he watched Huedhaut look at a strange book. Not knowing what was going on, he kept his silence and let the other god do his thing as their little sister fell into a deep sleep.
