Chapter 51 The Cafe
I laid in my bed for hours, not wanting to move.
"Katelyn! Katelyn! Katelyn!" Garroth rushed into my room and grabbed my wrist, hauling my ass out of bed.
"What?" I groaned. He pulled me down the stairs and only let go of me when we stopped at the front door. He opened it and I grinned from ear to ear, jumping into the arms of Nicole.
"Katelyn, honey!"
"Nicole, babe!"
I laughed a little and held her tighter.
"I missed you so much," I whispered. Nicole giggled and pulled back at arms length, staring at me wide eyed.
"I missed you too! Let's get you dressed and ready because we're gonna go grab some coffee and talk about everything!" She held my hands and squeezed them tightly. I nodded and jogged up the stairs to get ready.
After about ten minutes, I walked down and tied my hair into a ponytail.
"Alright, let's go."
We headed out the door and made our way to a nearby coffee shop.
"So how are things back at home?" I asked, shoving my hands into my pockets.
"Things are fine, a little tense right now, but it's that time of year." I nodded in understanding and had a million flashbacks of the facility during exams. "How's the mission going?"
"Right now? Horrible. We got in a huge arguement, broke whatever we had off. So I gotta work on that again," I sighed.
"Yikes. But I better meet him before I leave."
"You most likely will," I promised as we made our way to the cafe.
We walked inside, her rambling about something Dante did. And then I froze in place when I saw someone at the counter. Travis' white hair was disheveled, and his shoulders were slumping, but tense.
"Is...that him?" Nicole whispered. I swallowed around the lump in my throat, taking a deep breath.
"Yeah, that's him."
Travis turned around with a coffee cup in his hands and jumped a little. His tired green eyes widening at me. I watched his chest rise and his shoulders straighten.
"Hi."
"Hi."
"Who's this?" He looked to Nicole and smiled politely.
"Nicole."
"It's nice to meet you, I'm Travis." He held his hand out and Nicole shook it.
"Likewise," she greeted, "I've heard plenty about you."
"Funny," he chuckled, "I've never heard about you. Am I really that interesting that she needed to talk about me?"
"It was one conversation, but that's plenty with our Katie!" She giggled, holding me in a side hug. I groaned and pushed her off slightly.
"Very true," he chuckled, "so what are you doing here?"
"Missed her, can you blame me?"
"Not at all," Travis agreed, looking at me, "not at all..."
"Hey, you wanna join us?" Nicole piped up. I felt panic rise and I looked at Nicole, freaked.
"Sure." He looked at me and noticed my expression. "As long as it's alright with you, Katelyn."
"It's fine by me."
We all sat in a booth, Nicole sitting on one side and forcing me to sit on the other side with Travis by just giving me the look. As if she were speaking to me telepathically. I felt his aura tense when I sat down. I kept my arms and legs close, careful not to touch him.
"So, Katelyn tells me you two are a thing?" Travis coughed a little, choking on his coffee.
"Jumping right into the intimate details, you're not one for subtlety are you?" He cleared his throat and shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
"Nope, so was she wrong?"
"No." He shook his head. "We're not really fully committed, but we've been on a few dates. What about you, you still single?" Always good at avoiding the ugly realities.
"Nah, I got that someone special." She grinned and looked out the window. "And he's really special to me."
"Name?"
"Dante. He's...the perfect guy."
I scoffed and rolled my eyes. Travis looked at me with amusement.
"Don't like him?" He rose a brow, turning in his seat to face me a little more.
"No, can't say I do. But he makes Nic happy, so..." I shrugged. Travis nodded and we held eye contact for a long time.
"I need to use the washroom, be right back." Nicole hurried away, and Travis waited until she was out of earshot.
"We need to talk," he spoke lowly. I glared at him and then looked away.
"No. You answered my questions. Whatever we were, it's done. It's over."
"I don't want us to be over, Katelyn."
"Then you should've taken my offer of becoming serious."
"Katelyn, you never let me explain! I have a good reason as to why I said no."
"Then why? What possible reason could you have other than you don't really care about me?!"
"Because I'm not ready!" He breathed out, frustrated.
"What do you mean you aren't ready?" I whispered. Travis opened his mouth to speak but Nicole spoke up.
"Back~" she sang, taking her seat. I forced a smile for her sake and pulled myself further away from him.
"We should probably get back home, right?" I asked, trying to let her see in my gaze that I needed to get out of the cafe. She noticed and nodded once, a tiny motion not visible for the naked eye.
"Right, Garroth wanted to show us something."
I nodded and stood, hurrying away from Travis as if I had been burned by his presence. Nicole looped her arm around mine and grinned.
"It was nice to meet you, Travis, but we must take our leaves. Hope to see you around."
Travis nodded and took a deep breath, standing and straightening out some imaginary wrinkles.
"Bye, Nicole. See you around, Katelyn." He held my gaze for a little while longer, begging me to stay without words.
"Yeah, maybe," I breathed out, turning aorund. Nicole andI made our way down the street and we were on our way back ot the house.
"So...what did you two talk about while I was in the bathroom?"
"Nothing important," I lied.
A/N Exactly one thousand words. I was gonna have Travis and Katelyn plan to talk out their issues, but then something happened and I didn't feel like writing something happy. I love you all, byeee.
