Chapter 35 The Almost Accident
"Bless you," I heard from Aphmau for the eighteenth time today.
I had been sneezing far too much for my liking. My eyes were watery, my nose was stuffed, and I had a horrible cough. I was a walking mess.
"Thanks," I groaned, wiping my nose with my tissue.
"That's the worse part of this season, the sickness," Aphmau made a face, making me laugh.
I leaned against the lockers as she searched through her own locker for some homework to do in our free period.
"So what do you think is up with Travis today? He seems so out of it..." She mentioned. I froze and tensed a little.
"I'm not sure..."
"I dunno, sometimes he zones out, sometimes it's just staring at you, sometimes it's off into space. I tried to mention it to him, but he's sometimes hard to crack."
I bit the inside of my cheek and didn't answer.
"Anyways, shall we go to study hall?"
"Sure," I forced a smile and walked alongside her to the library. We sat next to Garroth who was asleep on top of the desk. I rolled my eyes at the idiot who decided to waste study hall as usual instead of trying to get as much work as possible done.
I looked around, and Travis was nowhere in sight. It was a little frustrating. When he got jealous he acted like a child throwing a tantrum, he would get mad and then ignore me.
I silently cursed Garte and my boss for putting me on the mission.
If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here and having to deal with such a childish imbecile.
As I was bitterly insulting Travis and several others in my head, the very boy with white hair walked in. All eyes darted to him as the loud metal doors slammed shut. We made eye contact, and I saw his chest rise and fall slightly in a small sigh. I looked away, knowing that I was the cause of that very sigh.
I looked around the table and felt my stomach drop when I saw the only empty chair at our table was one beside me. I quickly looked at my notes, not wanting to look at him.
I heard the chair pull out and someone sit down. I peeked a little and saw his black sneakers on the floor, confirming my theory that it was Travis who was sitting beside me.
"Why are you late?" Aphmau whispered, knowing to keep our voices down.
"I was busy," he mumbled. It was the first response all day that wasn't a two word minimum.
"Doing what? What is wrong with you today?" She hissed. I could feel his muscles tense.
"It's nothing to worry about," he sighed again, "just not myself."
"I'm your best friend, I'm going to worry. If you aren't yourself, then there is a reason for it, so what is it?"
"Aphmau," he spoke quietly but with such authority that it shocked me.
There were so many sides of Travis that I had yet to see, and it was scary to think that he could be this kind of angry.
There were different kinds of anger. There was the dry anger that you scream insults without wavering, not being able to keep your voice at a decent level. There's wet anger where you cry while screaming, showing how much that you cared. Then there was the kind that Travis was showing. He was quiet, his voice soft and forceful. He didn't yell, he didn't grow impatient, he only spoke solemnly and with little emotion.
At the way he spoke, Aphmau shut her mouth and turned her gaze back to her notebook.
By now, Garroth's head was up, and he stared at Travis with a puzzled look. Travis and I made eye contact but we quickly averted our eyes, eye contact being too much.
"This is so stupid..." I mumbled under my breath.
And it was. We were both being stupid.
The bell rang and we all filed out of the library. It was the last class of the day, so I packed up what I needed and drove home with Garroth.
"So what was wrong with Travis?" Garroth asked as we made a right turn.
"We got in a small argument..."
"When he snuck not-so-sneakily into your bedroom?''
"You noticed?" I rose a brow.
"Yeah," he chuckled, "he tries, but he isn't very stealthy."
"We were also highly trained," I pointed out, to which he nodded.
"So what happened?" He stole a glance at me and then looked back at the road.
We weren't going home.
"Well he asked about Jeffory and I, and I told him that we were a thing a while ago, and he got jealous when I answered whether or not Jeffory and I were more than Travis and I are right now."
"Wow....he gets jealous easily."
"Tell me about it....so where are we going?"
"Just thought we could grab something to eat instead of cook, is that alright with you?"
"Yup," I turned up the radio and watched out the window as the trees darted by.
I looked out onto the road ahead of us and saw that there was a small deer crossing the road.
"Garroth look out!" I yelled. Quickly, Garroth turned the car and slammed on the brakes. We stopped right before hitting a tree, and I held a hand to my chest while breathing heavily.
"That was close...."
"And you say I can't drive," I leaned my head against the head rest and let out a slow breath.
"Sorry," he laughed, "got distracted."
"By what?"
"I dunno, I just had major déjà vu as I was driving and it caused me to zone out."
"You're a dork, and I hate you, you know that right?"
"Meh, I know you love me."
Garroth pulled back onto the road and continued to drive to the destination as if nothing had happened.
"So, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there supposed to be a monthly visit from someone from the agency? Jeffory was October, Garte just came for parents day, and that's November. But who do you think is it gonna be for December?"
"Not sure," he shrugged, "maybe it's Laurance."
I rolled my eyes.
"Please no."
A/N The last two hundred words were kind of just there to fill the page, I dunno, wasn't sure what else to write for this chapter. I hope you're all enjoying this book ^_^ I need to get to writing more in advance though, but Christmas break is coming up for me as I'm writing this, so I'll have a little extra time to write. I love you all devils, byeeeeeeee.
