Chapter 32 The Parents' Day

"Katelyn, time to go to school."

I debated faking sick.

"I don't want to go today," I groaned into my pillow.

"You have to maintain your grades."

"I'm not going."

"You have to."

"But-"

"Come on."

I pushed myself out of bed and changed into my school uniform. I lazily threw my hair into a ponytail and sluggishly made my way down the staircase, each step coming at a satisfying stomp.

Garroth rolled her eyes and grabbed my arm, dragging me out of the house and into the car.

When we got to school, there was a sign saying "Welcome Parents" in big colourful letters. It was one of those things that you'd think wouldn't be so heart wrenching, but it was pulling at my chest and making tears rise to my eyes.

I blinked away the pathetic sting that was pooling in my eyes, and stepped out of the car.

"Good morning!" Aphmau was walking in the school gates with a woman at her side. She looked like an older version of Aphmau.

"Morning," My voice was unintentionally melancholic, but it could easily be passed off as tired.

"This is my mom," she grinned, her features bright. Her mother smiled kindly.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," I spoke in my usual monotone, shaking the out stretched hand.

"Sylvanna."

"Katelyn."

"And this is Garroth," Aphmau gestured to the blonde who was just now getting out of the car. Aph's mother grew angry and grabbed Aphmau's wrist, tugging her away, yelling something about the male sex being the bane of humanity. Garroth rose a brow but shrugged it off..

"I don't see why I couldn't just skip today, it's not like there are any real classes," I glumly crossed my arms, and lowered my gaze to the cracking concrete that I was standing on.

My heart jumped when I felt a hand on the lower part of my back. I looked and saw Travis had walked up to me. He smiled and made sure to keep his distance as if we were just friends.

"You look down today, Katie," he pointed out. I pulled away from him and scowled.

"Don't call me Katie, and I'm fine."

Travis looked to Garroth who simply shrugged and walked off into school. When Garroth was out of earshot, and almost to the school doors, Travis placed his hands on my shoulders and looked me in the eye.

"Really, tell me, what's wrong?"

"I just didn't get enough sleep, now if you'll excuse me, I have somewhere to b-"

"Katelyn?" I stopped and looked to see a tall blonde man clad in a work suit. I blinked in surprise, and stiffened. Travis quickly let go of my shoulders and took a step away to create some distance.

"Garte, hi. What are you doing here, if you don't mind me asking?"

"It's parent's day, I'm Garroth's father, I thought I should come."

I nodded and watched as he walked away.

"Wow...he's....intimidating..." Travis mumbled.

"Yup," I sighed and started to walk into the school, but Travis grabbed my wrist.

"Tell me, what is wrong."

"It's nothing you need to worry about!" I snapped and tugged my wrist out of his grasp.

I stormed into the school, emotions flooding and changing with every view of a parent. I didn't know how to react. I was upset about not having any parents, but I hated my parents, so what was the point in being upset about them not being there? I spotted Garroth and Garte and saw that they weren't actually talking. They were sitting solemnly, emotionless, drinking coffee.

I put my bag in my locker and grabbed a notebook, my journal, and a pencil. I put them in a smaller bag and I went out to the back garden of the school, sitting on the cement steps, knowing that no one would be out there until lunch. I took out the journal and started writing all of the progress on the mission.

First period went by, and I was still alone.

"I've been looking for you," I closed the journal at the sound of Travis' voice. I sighed and refused to look at him as I leaned my elbow on my knee and my chin on the palm of my hand.

"I noticed you're parents aren't here....is that why you're upset?"

"Partially," I mumbled.

"Look, if we're gonna become accustomed to each other in a more romantic relationship, you need to be able to talk to me," he took a seat beside me.

"My parents died about a week before I came here," I confessed, "and I guess this whole thing isn't really my scene."

He fell silent. I peeked over at him and saw him staring out instead of looking at me. He nodded a little and picked up some pebbles, tossing them into the snow.

"I know how you feel, my parents are gone too. Murdered."

"...mine were too, but I'm not sure how."

"Well mine were killed by some assassins. They were looking into some plans that this big crime-lord was working on, and he found out, had them killed, and now I plan on taking him out, then I'm gonna find the people who took my parents from me and have my revenge," he clenched his fist and looked at his shoes.

I felt a ping of guilt.

"I'm sorry," I whispered. Soon, his expression melted into a grin and he looked over at me.

"It was years ago now, but I'm doing okay without them. I still miss my mom from time to time, but it's something that you learn to get used to. You never truly get rid of your demons, just learn to live with them."

I nodded along, understanding what he was saying.

"I hate this parents' day thing too, what do you say we ditch and go catch a movie or something?"

"That would be nice..." I smiled.

"Great, let's go."

He grabbed my hand and we ran off of school grounds, only stopping when we were completely out of site.

Somehow, he had me laughing.

A/N Some of you are getting the feeling something bad is gonna happen soon.........I would never do that, not to you guys, that just isn't the kind of person that I am......okay, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm gonna do next, but for now I'm gonna keep thinking of something horrible. I love you all devils, byeeeeeee.
