Chapter 25: The Wedding Plans
Aphmau and Travis weren't at school the next day.
Aphmau wasn't at school the day after that, probably mourning.
Aphmau wasn't the same the day after that.
Aphmau hadn't smiled in two weeks.
I inhaled sharply as she walked down the school hallway, looking down and not heading to the classroom like she should had been. I followed her, and she walked down the cement stairways of the back schoolyard. She sat by the fountain and pulled out her MP3, listening to some music while pulling out a sketchbook and starting to draw.
I walked down to her and sat beside her.
"Not going to class?" I questioned. She jumped a little and looked up at me, trying for a smile but it was very forced.
"No, I suppose I'm as bad as Travis now, right?"
"No one is as bad as Travis," I joked. She giggled.
It was such a relief to see her actually smile for the first time in two weeks.
"Very true, so how are you two?"
"We're good, just friends so we're as good as friends can be," I shrugged, getting more comfortable.
"Just friends?" She frowned a little, her shoulders slumping, "you friendzoned him?"
"Kinda...? Technically he friendzoned me."
"Idiot..." She mumbled, "I still think you two would be a great couple!"
It was strange, you think the mention of a relationship would make her even more down, but she liked to see others happy, that's what made her happy.
"You're insane," I groaned.
"I know," she laughed again, "hey, don't think you can't bring him up."
"What?"
"Aaron. Don't try and tiptoe around the subject. Sure, I'm upset, but this is all about the mourning process. How can I get better if I can't talk about him?"
"Yeah, I kind of know how you feel....my parents died a little before I came here."
"Oh, Katelyn! I'm so sorry!" She gasped, holding a hand to her heart.
"It's alright, I didn't get to have a good relationship with them. But it still stung, they were still my parents, y'know?"
"Of course. I can't imagine losing my mother."
"It's been a couple months now, and I'm doing pretty good. It'll get better."
And there I went, telling all the lies that people told me. She smiled sadly and nodded.
"I know it will."
Her eyes weren't puffy like they were a few days prior. She was starting to smile, she was starting to bounce back.
I didn't want to break her and examine her, Aphmau was an open book that seemed closed. At first she doesn't let you see everything, but the closer you get the more you'll know.
Aphmau hugged me and I hugged back immediately.
"Get to class, I still get excused from all classes for three more days. See you at lunch."
I forgot about the odd rule our school had. If you lose someone close to you, you get two and a half weeks off of classes. It was odd, but I had to admit, it was a nice rule. It was nice to know that they would give you time to cope with such a shift in your life.
I got to math and slumped in my seat. I watched as Garroth twirled a pencil in between his fingers.
She would get over this, she had to.
_-_-_Aphmau's POV_-_-_
Once Katelyn left, I slammed my sketchbook shut and rushed to the side of the school. And there he was. Travis was leaning against the wall, smoking and scrolling through his phone.
"Travis Patrick Valkrum." I barked. Quickly, he tossed his cigarette on the ground and stomped on it.
"I wasn't smoking." He lied. I rolled my eyes and slapped his arm.
"You friendzoned Katelyn?! I thought you liked her, why would you friendzone someone you liked?!"
"Hey, she misinterpreted something I said. I don't want to just be her friend!"
"Then make a move!"
"How?!"
"I don't know! Just....make out with her!"
"That didn't work at all the first time, even when it was unintentional."
I sighed and put my face in my hands.
"I want you to be with her, and I want to help you, but I don't know how to do that when you're out here smoking instead of trying to get to know her!"
"I don't smoke."
I strangled the air in front of his neck and groaned.
"Travis, do you want to date Katelyn?"
He inhaled sharply and ran his fingers through his hair.
"I do but I don't. I don't want to hurt her, or even get hurt. But I feel things around her that I've never actually felt. She's special."
I smiled at the simplest words. He was falling for her, it was easy to tell.
"Which is why you cannot screw up, so ask her on a date, formally."
"But-"
"Travis."
"Okay, I'll ask her out."
"Good." I held out my hand and he let out a big sigh before slapping his second cigarette in my hand. I broke it in half and tossed it onto the ground. "This is good."
He nodded and inhaled deeply.
"Not every girl is going to break your heart." I whispered. He smiled sadly, a million memories replaying in his eyes.
"I know, but it's hard to wrap my head around that fact, hard to open up again, you know?"
I nodded and looked at my watch.
"The bells gonna ring soon, we should head to lunch before Katelyn knows you skipped your science class."
Travis grinned and lazily threw his arm over my shoulders and gave me a noogie. We got to the lunch table and smiled at Katelyn and Garroth.
"So are we still meeting up to do my studies tonight, Katelyn?" I asked.
"Sure thing, I wouldn't miss it for the world."
I glanced at Travis and noticed how he was watching Katelyn, smiling and looking at her as if she were his whole world. WHen they made eye contact, there was a glimmer. My heart ached as Aaron popped into my mind, but if someone else could be happy and in love, I want to watch it. I want to be able to stand at there wedding and say I watched them fall in love.
A/N Wrote this while needing to pee. Help. I love you all devils, byeeeeeeeeeeee.
