Chapter 22: The Dance

"Katelyn? You ready to go?" Jeffory called. I looked at the knee length navy blue dress in the mirror, finishing curling the last bit of hair.

"Yup," I sighed and slipped on the black strapped heels. I walked down the stairs and smiled, wrapping my arm around Jeffory's. "You sure you don't want to come, Gar?" I asked, looking at the bum on the couch playing video games.

"Yeah, you guys go have fun."

We said our goodbyes and decided we would walk to the school.

"You look beautiful by the way," Jeffory smiled.

"Thank you, you look nice too."

"You haven't been yourself today. Is something wrong?"

"It's nothing you need to worry about," I brushed it off, changing the subject.

"Alright...so how's the mission going? With Travis?"

"It's not going very well, right now we aren't on the best of speaking terms...I don't know what I did, he said I was his, and now he's being distant and cold and rude."

"Really?"

"Yeah, I just hope it works out in the end, or I'm dead."

The rest of the walk was silent as we eventually made our way to the front of the school. And of course Travis was standing out front, sucking the face off of Lucinda. Jeffory made us stop as he cleared his throat.

"Oh, it's you," Travis sneered, grabbing Lucinda by the waist and holding her close to his side. I avoided eye contact as I tried to subtly tug Jeffory's sleeve to go inside.

"Yes, how are you, Travis?"

"Just fine, thanks for pretending to care."

We stood there in awkward silence, Travis glaring at Jeffory, his grip becoming harder on Lucinda as he tried to refrain himself.

He's jealous.

Of course he was jealous, why hadn't I come to the conclusion sooner? We got into an argument when I was with Gene, but this time I wasn't mad, so it seemed like he was acting weird. But this was how he got when he was jealous. He would be stubborn and rude and give me the cold shoulder.

It all made sense.

Aphmau arrived with Aaron and ran over to me, hugging me rather tightly.

"Katelyn, you look beautiful!" She exclaimed.

"She always does," Travis scoffed, ticking his tongue in disdain while pulling Lucinda into the school. Aphmau sighed and rolled her eyes.

"Well come on! Let's go~" Aph sang as she skipped into the school, her date following close behind. Jeffory and I walked through the hallways and into the gymnasium.

Fairy lights hung from the ceiling, streamers and balloons everywhere. Loud music blasted and there were several tables of food and drinks.

"Let's dance!" I grinned, forgetting the mission for one moment and wanting to just have fun as I dragged Jeffory onto the dance floor. Four songs later, I went over and sat with Aphmau as Aaron got up to grab some food.

"So what's with Travis?" She asked.

"I dunno, I think he's jealous," I laughed a little, but still, I felt down. Him being like this wasn't a side of him that was fun to see. Especially when I'm the one he was being cold to.

"Well don't worry, he can't keep his eyes off you," she smirked, subtly nodding in his direction. I looked and saw him leaning against a wall, staring at me. We made eye contact, and he stood up. He started to walk towards me, as a slow song started to play. He stopped right in front of me and held his hand out.

"Wanna dance?" He smiled softly, making my heart malfunction in my chest. I swallowed my pride and inhaled.

"Sure," I put my hand into his and was dragged back onto the dance floor.

I wrapped my arms around his neck as he placed his around my waist. We turned in slow circles as other couples swayed along to the music.

"Can I ask you something?" I spoke up, interrupting the comfortable silence we were in.

"Of course," his tone was soft like his eyes that stared deeply into mine.

"What's been with you lately? You've been really cold..."

He switched his gaze to the floor as the song ended too quickly, and he pulled away.

I watched as Travis started to make his way down the hallway, and I stalked towards him.

"Stop running from me!" I yelled as we walked out the front doors, seeing the rain falling down hard onto the pavement.

"I'm not running!"

"Yes you are! You just left me in the gym when I asked you about why you were acting so distant! What is with you?!"

"What's with you?! Jumping into the arms of some random dude and then asking him out?!"

"As a friend! I'm sorry, am I not allowed to be friends with anyone?!"

"You never jumped into my arms! Except that one time you tried to get me to sleep with you!"

"Mother of Irene, I'm sorry I don't jump into your arms when I see you, I haven't seen him in almost two months!"

"Whatever, I'm leaving."

And he stormed off, not even giving me a second glance.

Four hours passed, and it was midnight. I told Jeffory where I was going, and walked across campus to one of the dorms. I walked through the halls, stopping at a familiar room. I knocked on the door and waited as Travis opened the door.

"What do you want?" He sighed.

"I'm sick of this."

"Of what?" He huffed.

"This! I am sick, and tired, of having you pretend that I did something! I didn't do anything wrong! I don't understand what I did to-"

"Don't you get it?! I'm jealous!" He admitted, "we will never have that strong of relationship," he sighed, exhausted with everything.

"You're jealous?"

"Yes! I admit it! I'm jealous."

I smiled a little.

"I just want to be close to you, and I screw up every time," he dropped his crossed arms.

"Don't worry about it," I sighed.

"I just want to have a better relationship with you."

"Like...friends?" I regretted the words as soon as they left my mouth.

"Uh....sure...."

Shit, I fucked up.

A/N FUN FACT! I originally wrote this part so that Travis and Katelyn hook up in the end, but then I said "nope" and now firendzone cause I'm evil. I love you all devils, byeeeeeeee.
