Chapter 20: Memories from Training
Date: September 15, 1944, 10:35PM
Location: Somewhere on the beachhead of Peleliu
After hitting the beaches of Peleliu and securing a beachhead so other forces could move further inland to aid the Marines leading the assault. However it was now dark and the American forces were now resting up for the big attack on the airfield the very next day.
Team Hunters were currently resting in a make-shift foxhole that was big enough for all of them to sleep in and Blake was on look out first before Ruby took her place. Ruby herself wasn't resting at the moment as she was writing down the events that had unfolded during the attack in her journal, writing for Ruby gave her a chance for others to remember what she did when she wouldn't be around anymore.
'Man everyday this war just gets even more worse then the day before it.' Ruby thought to herself as she wrote in her Journal. 'As of now I can only hope I am doing the right thing to help end this war.'
Just then some footsteps were heard approaching the fox hole and Blake turned around to see another Marine walking up to the fox hole and then stopped when he saw Blake looking at him.
(This is what he looked like...You probably know who it is.)
"Uh...Hi." He said quietly.
"Can I help you with something Private?" Blake asked with a confused face.
"Do you have room for one more?" The Private Marine asked. "Everyone else is full."
Blake then looked at Ruby to know what she thought of his question and Ruby nodded at Blake and she turned to look back at the Private.
"Sure, jump in." Blake answered and the young Marine the slid into the fox-hole with little trouble and sat down. But when he got a better look at the others he was sharing the fox-hole with he noticed they were all girls and not men.
"Um are any you girls really old enough to serve in the Marine corps?" the Marine asked as he didn't think that the Marine corps would allow women to fight at the frontlines alongside men.
"Yes, we are all old enough." Ruby answered. "And besides they saw what we could do to fight enemy soldiers, what name by the way private?"
"Private C. Miller 1st Marines." Miller answered. "And You are?"
"Captain Ruby Rose 1st Marines." Ruby replied. "The one with Blonde hair is my sister Sargent Yang Xiao Long, the one with white hair is Sargent first class Weiss Schnee, the one whose on watch in Corporal Blake Belladonna, and finally the corpsman in the group Corporal summer Rose."
"Wow... you all have very impressive ranks." Miller said. "How did you all get through basic?"
"Well it is quite a story." Ruby said and then began to tell her story.
========================================== (line Break!!!)==============
Date: January 27th, 1943, 5:45AM Pacific time
Location: Guadalcanal, Henderson field, Inside a tent
Team RWBY were just sleeping in there tent on cots that had insect netting around them so no critters would get inside. Outside the sun wasn't up just yet into the blue sky. In the tent the 4 girls were all sleeping peacefully until Ruby opened her eyes and yawned. She then looked out the entrance to the tent and saw that the sun wasn't shining yet and today was the day they would begin training. Team RWBY had just slept in there new Marine recruit uniforms as their huntress combat clothes weren't allowed in the Marine corps.
Ruby had just gotten up from her bed when Dan then walked into the tent with a look of determination on his face.
"EVERYONE UP!" He yelled and soon the rest of the team woke up from his shouting. "IT IS TIME FOR TRAINING! GET CHANGED QUICKLY AND MEET ME OUTSIDE!" Dan then walked out of the tent and that was the signal for the girls to get dressed and meet Dan outside. Team RWBY then got up and out of bed and put on their boots, pants, and shirts and ran outside to meet Dan which was standing outside about 20 feet from the tent. "Glad to see you all made it, now normally we would send you 4 back to the states for training but since we are kind of in a time crunch I will have to train you 4 here."
"Anyways today is the day you will all begin your training as recruits." Dan stated as all the girls lined up in front of him and stood at attention. "And by the time you pass your training you will become Marines."
"I thought you knew we already knew our training was today." Ruby pointed out and that was a Mistake as Dan looked at her with a mad face.
"RECURIT I AM THE ONE TALKING HERE!" Dan yelled and that shut Ruby up. "You will speak only when spoken to and you will follow my directions correctly and carefully."
"Now, today I have planned a few activities for you 4 to do today and you will compete them to the best of your ability and the use of your powers are not allowed." Dan explained. "The purpose of this training is to increase your psychical strength and the use of your super powers won't make any of you stronger."
"Um... Just FYI those powers our called our semblance." Yang pointed out again annoying Dan.
"RECURIT DID YOU NOT HEAR WHAT I JUST SAID ABOUT NOT TALKING?!?!" Dan shouted but then calmed down. "Thought I appreciate you explaining what those powers are called can it wait till afterwards?" Yang then stood back at attention along with the rest of the girls.
"Thank you, now this training will be about 8 weeks long and I expect all of you to pass it with flying colors." Dan explained. "When that happens you will all graduate from training and become Marines, you will be a weapon of war and when duty calls you will be the ones to answer."
"But until that day comes you are starting from the bottom and you will refer to me as 'sir' and nothing else, am I understood?" Dan asked.
"Sir yes Sir." Team RWBY said in unison.
"I can't hear you Ladies!" Dan shouted.
"SIR YES SIR!" The girls all shouted in response.
"Now then...Drop and give me 50 push ups!" Dan ordered and the girls gave a surprised look before he shouted again. "DID I STUDDER? GIVE 50 PUSH UPS RIGHT NOW!" Then dropped to the ground and started doing push ups to avoid getting yelled at again. "There we go! That's what I want to see out of you ladies!"
For the push ups Ruby was doing alright going at a steady pace and making sure she wasn't over doing herself. Weiss meanwhile was falling a bit behind Ruby as she wasn't used to psychical workouts as everyone else. Blake was doing a little bit better then Weiss but wasn't doing as much as Ruby. Yang Meanwhile was doing the best of the 4 as she was the strongest in the group and was doing push-ups the fastest. Dan walked around them to ensure none of them were cutting it short and cheating.
Soon after about just under a minute all the girls finished their push ups and then stood back up straight and waited for Dan's next order. Dan then looked at the girls and secretly he was surprised that the girls completed 50 push ups in just under a minute but now it was time for something else.
"Good job ladies, now we are going to run!" Dan said. "Now follow me and don't stop until I do!" Dan then started off with a steady jog and then sped up to a slight run and not long after the girls started following Dan to where he was running to. Now for Dan he was going at the pace that he went through at basic training back in the states and he thought that would be the perfect pace to put the girls through. (Just FYI: it is like high 70s or low 80 degree heat right now)
The pace that Dan was going at was decent for Ruby as she sometimes ran from time to time back at Beacon in the morning or afternoon. Weiss on the other hand was sweating a bit more then the other 3 girls as she was used to colder weather back in remnant but she still kept up with Ruby. Blake kept up a steady pace with the other girls remembering not to push herself too hard as she did grow up on a hot tropical island so the heat around her wasn't much of a problem unlike for Weiss who was now sweaty like a melting icicle from the heat. Yang was also sweating a bit but not as much as Weiss but was working hard trying to keep pace with Dan and the others.
'huff...huff...huff...this is hot out here.' Ruby thought to herself. 'But I must get through this if I want to succeed!'
'Must...keep...pace...with...the...others!' Weiss said in her mind as she was already starting to sweat.
'Okay Blake just keep pace with the others and this should be no Problem.' Blake thought to herself.
'Man if the weather wasn't so hot I would be killing it right now!' Yang thought. 'I guess not everything can go your way.'
Timeskip to much later after running....
Time: 6:55AM
Team RWBY were all now in a pool of sweat as they had just ran for more then 3 hours and the distance they ran was about 8 miles. Needless to say the girls were now exhausted after the long run they had to do. Dan was also sweating a bit but not as much as the girls as he carried a canteen of water with him and he was chewing gum.
'ugh... that was tiring..' Ruby thought to herself as she wipe sweat from her foe-head. 'I hope we don't do that again.'
'Oh my Oum... I never had to run that long in forever..' Weiss thought to herself as she was now dripping in sweat from the run. 'I wonder if Winter went through something like that when she joined the military.'
'Whew, that wasn't too bad I guess.' Blake thought. Yang on the other hand stretched out her arms.
"Alright now that that's over with, follow me to the mess tent and get yourselves something to eat." Dan said and the girls sighed in relief. "But after you finish we are going right to rifle shooting, so make it quick!"
Soon Dan ran to lead the girls to the mess tent where the other Marines were getting food to eat and not to mention they would also get water there to rehydrate themselves. As they were on the way to the mess tent they saw other Marines getting into a line waiting to get their own food. Soon the five reached then tent and the girls all got trays to carry their morning food and got into line with the others. While they waited in line they smelled the food the cooks were serving to the Marines for breakfast.
Soon after a short time in line they got their food which consisted of a bowl of oatmeal, a couple slices of bacon and two slices of buttered toast. They also had a canteen of water to help wash down the meal and soon the 4 Beacon students found a table for 4 and sat down to eat their breakfast. Ruby herself wasn't so sure about the food they were served as it looked to be a lower quality then the food they were served at Beacon.
"I wonder how the Marines eat this stuff." Ruby said as she put a spoonful of oatmeal in her mouth and sallow it quickly. "Ugh... it's not bad it you sallow it fast, then it doesn't taste bad." Yang then looked down at her food and ate a piece of the toast.
"Well the toast doesn't taste too bad." Yang said and took another bite. Soon the whole team was eating their breakfast as they had to eat fast to meet Dan's deadline for the day and they certainly didn't want to get yelled at again.
After eating Breakfast...
Soon after all the girls from team RWBY were finished eating they soon met Dan waiting outside for them as he ate earlier. They then stood in team formation as Dan walked over to them and the girls awaited his next instructions.
"Alright now that your done eating you will now begin rifle-shooting." Dan said. "Now follow me and I get you familiarized with our standard issue firearm." Soon Team RWBY followed Dan through the airfield passing a bunch of Airplanes and motorized vehicles. They also passed a couple of Marines who were just doing morning works on some of the vehicles to which some had surprised looks on their faces as the group passed them. They then arrived at a make-shift target range and they saw David there and he was holding a rifle in his hands and standing firm at attention and behind him was a small rack of rifles possible the ones they would be shooting.
'Alright time to show off what I can do!' Ruby thought to herself and slightly smirked at she was a excellent shot. 'I'll pass this no problem!'
"Alright this is our shooting range here and today I will put your rifle skills to the test." Dan said and then David held out his rifle to show the girls what they would be shooting. "This is our new standard issued firearm, the .30Cal Springfield M1 Battle Rifle and each of you will be issued one of these rifles for today to see how much of a good shot you are."
Soon the 4 teenage girls picked up a M1 from the rack and then went back to face Dan to wait for his next instructions. Ruby was trying her best to not bawl over the rifle as it looked so unique to her as she had never seen anything like it before.
'Man this rifle is soo cool I wish I could have one with me!' Ruby thought to herself while trying to maintain a straight face in front of Dan.
"Now before we begin shooting, Corporal David here is going to show you a demonstration of how this rifle works." Dan said and then turned toward David. "David you may fire."
David then nodded and then turned to face down the target range, he then pulled back on the bolt of the gun to lock it back and then pulled out a clip from his vest and loaded it into the internal magazine of the rifle and then slapped the bolt forward. He then took aim down the range and fired.

After David had finished shooting he turned back around to face the girls and Dan as he was finished with the demonstration. The girls now had a better idea on how they needed to use this rifle when they would be sent into combat.
"Do you ladies now have a better idea of how to operate that rifle?" Dan asked in a demanding tone.
"SIR YES SIR!" The girls all replied in unison.
"Good, pick a spot on the range and you will begin your target practice." Dan ordered and the girls soon picked their positions. "Now, you will be using live ammunition, bullets don't have any brains they will hit whatever you aim at, so don't start shooting at each other." Dan first walked over to Ruby where she was lying down on her stomach aiming her rifle down range. He then dropped 1 clip of ammunition for her rifle and then walked down the range and gave the same amount to the rest of the girls.
'Alright got to make this count.' Ruby thought as she examined one of the clips.
'I hope this wont go too bad.' Weiss thought to herself as she looked down the target range at the targets.
'Okay Blake you can do this just aim for the center of the target and you'll be fine.' Blake said in her head.
'Hmph this won't be hard.' Yang thought. 'I shoot shotgun shells from my bracelets, this is nothing compared to that.' Soon Dan gave the orders to the load the weapons.
"Load!" Dan shouted and soon the girls loaded their rifles. "Aim!" the girls then took aim at each of their targets down range. "Fire!"
Soon the girls firing at their targets slowly and accurately to make sure that all 8 rounds hit the close to the center of the bullseye. Ruby wasn't having a problem as her scythe was also a gun so she had some experience shooting rifles and she was mostly hitting close to the bullseye. Weiss on the other hand wasn't doing as well as Ruby was as the recoil of the rifle was hard to get used to after a couple of shots and was still trying to hit the bullseye. Blake was still doing a little better then Weiss but also had a bit of trouble with the rifles recoil but nonetheless took her shots accurately. Yang meanwhile was having no trouble at all using the M1 and was almost on par with ruby in terms of the target they were shooting at.
Soon after each of the girls shot all 8 rounds from their rifle and the clip then ejected itself from the rifle and made a distinct 'PING' as it flew into the air.
"Cease firing!" Dan yelled after all the ammunition had been shot and soon all the girls stood up from their firing positions. "Now I will look over your targets to see if any of you need to work on your aim." Dan then walked down the range and grabbed all of the paper bullseye targets off their posts and then brought them back to the safe-zone. The girls stood still at their shooting positions as Dan looked over their targets and made notes to see who needed improvement and who didn't.
'I hope everyone did good.' Ruby thought to herself. 'We all need to pass this.'
Soon Dan came back with a clipboard in his hands and that told the girls that he had the results of their target shooting. He first walked up to Ruby and she was hopping she had a passing score for the shooting range.
"Red, you...are a natural, you hit the target in the center all 8 times." Dan said impressed. "Where did you learn to shoot?"
"Uh...Well, my uncle showed me how to handle recoil of any firearm so he was the one that taught me." Ruby answered.
"Well, he taught you very well." Dan said. "You just might qualified for a sniper."
This shocked Ruby a little bit as she was now going to be a sniper if she qualified for it. Dan then walked up to Weiss who was expecting good feedback.
"Snowflake, you need to work on your aim a little bit." Dan said. "Aim slightly lower so your rounds don't go over your targets head." Weiss didn't show it but she was a little disappointed in herself for aiming too high. "Take this experience and learn from it, because you might not get so lucky in combat." Dan then walked away leaving Weiss a little bit mad.
Blake was up next and Dan looked down at his clip board and then back up to Blake to tell her how she did.
"Darkness, you didn't do too bad but your aim can be just a bit better." Dan said and Blake nodded. "But keep practicing your aim and you might be on Ruby's level some day."
Then finally Yang was last to check to see how well she shot at the target down range compared to all the other girls.
"Blondie, you had pretty good aim that is almost comparable to red down there." Dan said. "I think you make a pretty good rifleman, alongside the other Marines."
"That was pretty good shooting girls but the day is just getting started!" Dan yelled. "Put the rifles back on the rack and follow me to the obstacle course!"
Soon after that the girls picked up their rifles and then placed them back on the rack where they got them from and started to follow Dan again. But this was only part of the day for team RWBY's training in the US Marine Corps out of many more to come. What waiting ahead of them was nothing they could have ever expected.
Present time...
"Wow, and all of you made it through that training?" Miller asked surprised.
"Yeah, I would tell more but I am tired and would like to get at least some shut-eye before tomorrow." Ruby said as she yawned a little. "But I might tell you more later if we ever have spare time again."
"Well, it is just shocking to me that you made it through training regardless." Miller said. "But yeah some sleep sounds nice right now."
"Well, lets see what awaits for us tomorrow." Ruby said. "Night Miller."
"Night captain." Miller replied. Soon Blake was on watch while the others slept waiting for whatever came there way the next day.
