Prolouge

Every day and every night, Barracuda was running and hiding.  But this time he had another problem.  His egg had hatched, and it was female.  At this time Barracuda had been carrying her gently on his.  He felt bad because she had no mother to guide her and show her the world, instead she had to hide with him because he was lousy and could not do anything.  But he had too.  He had to keep her safe from any harm, or she would die.  She was his only dragonet and he did not want anything to hurt her.

"You need a name, so you can remember that you are part of this world too," he said looking straight into her big, beady, bright purple eyes. He wanted to tell her everything, but he did not have time, for he was running from another Sea Dragon whom did not appreciate what he did. In fact he was running from the bratty Princess. He knew if she found him she would kill him, AND his dragonet.

"Tide Pool," he continued, "your name is Tide Pool," he finished knowing he could not call her 'his dragonet' for the rest of her life.

He looked into her eyes again and she looked straight back.     The look in her eyes was different, it was mysteriously fascinating.  The beautiful purple made her look determined and strong.  She was absolutely perfect.   The thought about what would happen to her if the Princess caught her kept coming to Barracudas' mind.

He didn't like to talk about his mate, and yet he knew he had to tell Tide Pool about her mother.

"Tide Pool," he started, "your mother was a good dragon, so don't live your life thinking she abandoned you."  Tide Pool turned her head to to look at him with her big eyes.  It was like she knew what he was talking about.  It was like she understood him.  "She left though, she left because she was putting me in danger.  Although, I was too selfish to see that she could have been killed too.   When she left she told me that you were to be named a beautiful, strong, name.  That is why I chose the name Tide Pool for you.  Always remember what  I am saying.  Tide Pool, you are special.   From the day I saw your egg, to the day I saw you beautiful eyes.  You are special, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.  I will always be here for you Tide Pool.  Even if it's not on earth."

At that point he felt closer to his daughter than ever that he forgot to tell her the most important thing about her mother.

"BARRACUDA?,"  a strange voice hissed loudly.  The voice sounded angry.  "AND WHO IS THIS?" She asked looking at Tide Pool, " THIS IS YOUR LITTLE DRAGONET ISN'T IT, BARRACUDA!!??  I THOUGHT YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SMASH HER EGG!!  I TOLD YOU TOO!!! YOU BETRAYED US ALL BARRACUDA!!!!  AND FOR THAT-" she cut off and looked at the dragonet. She knew it was special, and could probably kill her if she threatened to kill her father.   And though Tide Pool didn't know what death was, the Princess was still afraid of her.   Barracuda knew she was afraid of his daughter, and yet he didn't know why.  He knew she was gonna kill him.

If she's gonna kill me I can at least ask her a favor, he thought sadly knowing he was sparing his life for his dragonets'.  But he felt it was the right thing to do.  She wasn't even a year yet and she needed a life.   And a good one at it.

"Look, Princess," he sighed and looked at her bravely, "I know your gonna kill me, but please I BEG you, spare her life."

"FINE!" said the Princess although she hesitated, "but SHE has to stay away from me!!  Now, any last words?"  she said as she put her talon around his neck.

"TIDE POOL ALWAYS REMEMBER ME! REMEMBER WHAT I TOLD YOU!!  REMEMBER EVERYTHING I TOLD YOU!! DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME!! ITS EITHER LIFE OR DEATH!! RUN, TIDE POOL, RUN!!!!"  He had shouted his last word and a tear rolled from his eye.   Tide Pool stared at him the way she always did except this time her eyes where full of fear.

With his last words finished the Princess snapped his neck and he was gone.    After Tide Pool saw this, she ran as fast as she could crying.  She didn't stop until she had no more breath to breathe.

"Life or death," she said remembering how her father had just scarified his life for hers.  Those were her first words and they weren't very pretty, but they were important.

She thought about that for a while, but when she turned around she saw a  big, dark purple dragon behind her.
